View Full Version : But I don't wanna be a Pirate! - Pittsburgh Dynasty

Some of those heckles were really uncalled for: "Avast ye matey" - what the heck does that mean? "20 degrees off the starboard side - the Spanish Galleon!" -there's no comeback for that!

Why the Pirates?
I felt like doing a dynasty with a small market team, and for some reason I like the Pirates, so it was a pretty easy choice.

I'm gonna be playing on Manager with 9.40 and default rosters, with default settings, except Injury Frequency at -50% (Injuries are just annoying and piss me off)

So, heres my dynasty, full of sub-par writing and TV/Movie quotes

The Roster
You shouldn't be allowed to touch a baseball. Except for Rodriguez, you're all an insult to the game.

Yeah that pretty much sums it up, except replace "Rodriguez" with "Bay". Let's take a look around. Except for Sean Casey, the entire infield is either inexperienced or inconsisten. Also, I have 4 corner outfielders and no Center fielders. The only proven starter is Kip Wells (5.09 ERA last year!) and I have no idea what to expect from Zach Duke or Oliver Perez, and the two rookies filling out the rotation. Plus, only good can come from the fact that Jeromy Burnitz is going to get regular playing time.

Releases
I've never heard of half of these guys and the ones I do know are way past their prime.
Most of these guys never had a prime.

I started with trimming some of the fat. I released 2B Jeff Reboulet, RP Albie Lopez, RP Kirk Bullinger, RF Orlando Merced, and 1B Jose Hernandez

Trades
One of the first things I noticed was Joe Randa taking up both a roster spot and millions of dollars, so I decide to get rid of him. I head on over to the Trading Block where I get no offers. I guess for some strange reason, other teams don't want a 36 year old Third baseman with one year left on his $4,000,000 contract. What is wrong with everybody? So I throw in a prospect and get offered a prospect in return.

Yankees Get: 3B Joe Randa and 2B J.J. Furmaniak
Pirates Get: CF Kevin Thompson

Thompson probably wont make the lineup, since hes 26 years old and has an 80 peak, but he does have a sexy 89 speed

April 5-6 Cincinnati Reds (0-0) at Pittsburgh Pirates (0-0)

April 5 Jason Bay starts off the season 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. Jeromy Burnitz tries his best not to get traded or released going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and a stolen base. Kip Wells gives up 5 runs in 6.1 IP. Pittsburgh 8, Cincinnati 7
April 6 Rookie catcher Ryan Doumit gets 3 RBI on 3 hits. Zach Duke goes 7 innings getting 7 strike outs and giving up 1 run. Mike Gonzalez gets his second save. Pittsburgh 4, Cincinnati 1

April 8-10 Chicago Cubs (0-3) at Pittsburgh Pirates (2-0)

April 8 Scott Strickland blows Oliver Perez's gem (8 innings, 1 run) by giving up a ninth inning homer to Derrek Lee, giving the Cubs a one run lead. Ryan Doumit gets 2 more hits. Chicago 2, Pittsburgh 1
April 9 Rookie pitcher Paul Maholm allows 7 hits and 3 runs in his 4 inning debut. Salomon Torres gives up 3 runs in his first inning of the season, and is consequently put on the trade block. Chicago 6, Pittsburgh 3
April 10 Kip Wells totally redeems himself with 8 shutout innings paving the way for Mike Gonzalez's 3rd save of the season to avoid the sweep. Burnitz goes 2 for 4 with an RBI double. Pittsburgh 2, Chicago 0

League News
DET trades 2B Placido Polanco, RF Magglio Ordonez for CHC SS Neifi Perez, C Geovany Soto
(What was Detroit thinking?)

April 11-14 Pittsburgh Pirates (3-2) at Washington Nationals (3-3)

April 11 Zach Duke went scoreless through 8 innings before giving up 2 singles and a homer to Nick Johnson in the bottom of the ninth. Sean Casey hits 2 doubles in 3 at-bats. Washington 3, Pittsburgh 2
April 13 Freddy Sanchez hits two doubles in Oliver Perez's first win of the season. Perez strikes out 8 in 5.2 innings. 6 of the 7 Pirates hits went for extra bases. Pittsburgh 4, Washington 2
April 14 Jeromy Burnitz hits a grand slam in the 8th to give Pittsburgh the lead. Maybe I won't get rid of him after all. Jack Wilson also homers in Pat Maholm's quality start. Pittsburgh 6, Washington 2

April 15-17 Pittsburgh Pirates (5-3) at Chicago Cubs (3-5)

April 15 Jose Castillo's home run and Jody Gerut's 3 RBI aren't enough to cover pitching performances by Kip Wells (5.1 IP, 4 R) and Salomon Torres (1 IP, 4 R). Torres has now given up 7 runs in 2 innings with opponents batting .571 against him. Chicago 8, Pittsburgh 5

TRADE
PIT RP Salomon Torres, 2B Jose Castillo, 2B Victor Mercedes for CHW 2B Tadahito Iguchi, $1 Million
(I like Iguchi and the cash covers his contract)

April 16 Tadahito Iguchi makes his Pirates debut, going 0 for 5. Burnitz gets his second home run, but is batting .222 with a .744 OPS. Ryan Doumit gets 3 hits and Mike Gonzalez gets his 5th save. Pittsburgh 3, Chicago 2
April 17 Iguchi gets hits first hits in Pittsburgh (2 for 3) and Chris Stewart gives up 3 runs in 6.2 innings in his major league debut. Chicago 3, Pittsburgh 2

April 18-19 New York Mets (9-3) at Pittsburgh Pirates (6-5)

April 18 Oliver Perez improves to 2-0 allowing 3 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings. Iguchi went 3 for 5 and was a triple away from the cycle. Mike Gonzalez got his 6th save, tied for the league lead. Pittsburgh 6, New York 3
April 19 Victor Diaz of the Mets hits two homers to pick up 6 RBI. A bad outing by the bullpen didn't help the cause, with Scott Strickland and Damaso Marte combining for 1.2 IP and 7 runs. New York 11, Pittsburgh 3

April 20-21 Houston Astros (6-7) at Pittsburgh Pirates (7-6)

April 20 Roy Oswalt (8.1 IP, 1 R) out-pitched Kip Wells (7.2, 2 R) in this pitchers duel. Ryan Doumit went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles. Sean Casey and Freddy Sanchez also hit doubles. Houston 2, Pittsburgh 1
April 21 Zach Duke's record drops to 0-2 despite a 3.25 ERA. Houston shut down the Pirates offense again, this time at the hands of Andy Pettitte, who gave up 1 run in 8 innings. Houston 5, Pittsburgh 1

April 22-24 Pittsburgh Pirates (7-8) at Cincinnati Reds (7-7)

April 22 In Cory Stewart's second start, he showed that he deserves more than 2 starts. Stewart went 8 shutout innings and Mike Gonzalez got his 7th save. Pittsburgh 2, Cincinnati 0
April 23 Sean Casey and Freddy Sanchez both hit their first home runs, which led to me noticing that Jason Bay hasn't hit a dinger yet. Very disturbing. Oliver Perez gave up 1 run in 6 innings. Pittsburgh 5, Cincinnati 3
April 24 Pittsburgh completes their first 3 game sweep of the season on the wings of an amazing team pitching performance. The Reds compiled only 2 hits, although one was a home run by Austin Kearns. Pittsburgh 4, Cincinnati 1

April 25-27 Pittsburgh Pirates (10-8) at Milwaukee Brewers (9-10)

April 25 Jason Bay goes 3 for 3 with two doubles, but I'm still waiting for that first homer. Jeromy Burnitz and Freddy Sanchez both go yard. Pittsburgh 6, Milwaukee 3
April 26 Milwaukee pitcher Doug Davis pitched a 1-run complete game, giving up only 4 hits against the Pirates. Scott Strickland blew the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 8th, giving up 4 runs. Milwaukee 5, Pittsburgh 1
April 27 Well, it took 21 games, but Jason Bay finally hit his first home run of the season. That's right, he's on pace for 8 homers this season. And he's the best hitter on the team. Milwaukee 5, Pittsburgh 3

April 29-May 1 St. Louis Cardinals (13-9) at Pittsburgh Pirates (11-10)

April 29 The Cards tore apart my pitching, getting 7 runs in 3.1 innings off Oliver Perez, then 6 runs in 4.1 innings off Bobby Bradley. Jason Bay went 3 for 5. St. Louis 13, Pittsburgh 3
April 30 Jim Edmonds went 4 for 4 with a home run and Chris Carpenter picked up a complete game shutout. St. Louis 5, Pittsburgh 0
May 1 Jack Wilson went 3 for 4, which raises his batting average to...221. This team has serious scoring problems, but the pitching is pretty good. Pittsburgh 5, St. Louis 1

Team Record: 12-12

Well, we finished the first month at .500, which is better than expected I guess. As I said, this team is pretty bad offensively, scoring 3.33 runs a game, good for 2nd worst in the NL.

Hot Players
Jason Bay .365/.455/.506 - 8th in AVG, 7th in OBP
Jody Gerut .338/.414/.468
Zach Duke 2.53 ERA 42.2 IP
Mike Gonzalez 0.00 ERA, 10 Saves - 2nd in Saves

Cold Players
Tadahito Iguchi .188/.246/.313 since joining the team
Jeromy Burnitz .207/.240/.380
Scott Strickland 7.04 ERA 15.1 IP
Damaso Marte 7.15 11.1 IP

On the Block

Sean Casey
Jeromy Burnitz

May 2-4 Milwaukee Brewers (13-12) at Pittsburgh Pirates (12-12)

May 2 Brewers closer Derrick Turnbow blew his team's 4-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth. Tadahito Iguchi got the game winning 2 RBI single as part of his 3 for 5 night. Damaso Marte got the win, making him 4-0 and the team leader in wins. Oh, and he has a 7.30 ERA. Pittsburgh 6, Milwaukee 4
May 3 Ryan Doumit has been a pleasant suprise so far, batting .308 on the season, including this 2 double, 1 home run, 4 RBI game. Oliver Perez strikes out 11 in 7 innings of work. Pittsburgh 8, Milwaukee 3
May 4 Pittsburgh got 5 runs on only 4 hits and 3 home runs. Sean Casey, Jack Wilson, and Craig Wilson each went deep. Kip Wells got his fourth win with 8 innings of one run ball. Pittsburgh 5, Milwaukee 1

TRADE
PIT 1B Sean Casey and 3B Jose Bautista for ARZ 1B Conor Jackson
Comments: I'd been looking for a replacement for Casey for a while. He's not a bad player, but he definately doesn't produce enough (.273/.301/.384) to be worth $8.5 million per year. Plus, Conor Jackson is a really good prospect. Craig Wilson will play 1B and Jackson will be sent to AAA, until I can get rid of Jeromy Burnitz.

May 5-8 Pittsburgh Pirates (15-12) at New York Mets (19-8)

May 5 3-RBI performances by Jeromy Burnitz and Ryan Doumit were not enough to top the Mets offense, led by David Wright. Wright was 3 for 5 and was a double away from the cycle. New York 10, Pittsburgh 8
May 6 Zach Duke's ERA dropped to 2.31 with 8 innings and 1 run allowed. Iguchi, Jody Gerut, Craig Wilson, and Freddy Sanchez all had multiple hit games. Pittsburgh 6, New York 1
May 7 Pittsburgh was held to 3 hits on Pedro Martinez, who went 8.1 innings. Carlos Beltran hit 2 home runs, one off of Paul Maholm and one off on Scott Strickland. Jeromy Burnitz hit a homer. New York 8, Pittsburgh 2
May 8 Jason Bay is in a bit of a slump. He is 3 for 32 in May and his batting average has gone from .365 to .289 in that run. Also, he still only has 1 home run, making him on pace for 5 this season. Oh yeah, the game...Pirates only get 2 runs off 13 hits. New York 3, Pittsburgh 2

May 9-11 Pittsburgh Pirates (16-15) at Florida Marlins (12-18)

May 9 Paul Maholm gets rocked (2.1 IP, 6 R) and Ismael Valdez pitches a gem (8 IP, 1 R). Reggie Abercrombie and Rob Mackowiak both have 3 hit games for Florida. Florida 8, Pittsburgh 2
May 10 Craig Wilson has a 3 for 4 game with a double and a home run. Kip Wells gives up 3 runs including a homer to Brad Fullmer, which causes me to see that Brad Fullmer is now leading the league in home runs with 13. Brad Fullmer. Brad Fullmer has 12 more than Jason Bay. I just can't let go of this. Florida 5, Pittsburgh 2
May 11 Long reliever Matt Peterson nearly blows a 6 run lead in the bottom of the 8th, giving up 5 runs, including a grand slam to Miguel Cabrera. Pittsburgh 8, Florida 7

Team Record: 17-17

TRADE
PIT RF Jeromy Burnitz and SS Travis Dawkins for BOS SP Clay Buchholz
Comments: I think I got a pretty good deal. Burnitz was definately not worth $6.7 million with his production (.228/.269/.455). He was leading the team in home runs, though. Oh well. Buchholz is 18 years old with an 87 Peak, which is better than I was hoping I could get.

Craig Wilson will be moving to Right Field, and Conor Jackson will take the starting First Baseman job, after tearing up AAA in 7 games (.417/.548/.583). So those two trades clear up a lot of budget space (Combined they made up over 25% of the payroll), and made way for possibly better players. Now the only other player I'm possibly looking to trade away is Jack Wilson, but I'll give him some more time.

May 12-15 San Fransisco Giants (15-18) at Pittsburgh Pirates (17-17)

May 12 Middle Reliever Matt Peterson gave up 7 runs in 3 innings to raise his ERA to 10.66 on the season. Peterson let 11 San Fransisco batters on base and gave up a home run to Moises Alou in the eigth. Craig Wilson hit his 5th homer of the season and Conor Jackson went 2 for 3 with a walk in his debut. San Fransisco 12, Pittsburgh 4
May 13 Oliver Perez only gave up one unearned run in 7 innings which led the way to the 12th save of Mike Gonzalez's season. Ryan Doumit and Freddy Sanchez both had RBI doubles. Pittsburgh 3, San Fransisco 2
May 14 Pittsburgh got 13 hits in the 10 inning game, including 4 players with multiple hits. Conor Jackson hit a double and a triple and Ryan Doumit went 3 for 5. San Fransisco 6, Pittsburgh 5
May 15 Closer Mike Gonzalez gave up his first run of the season in the top of 10th inning, making his ERA 0.47. San Fransisco takes 3 games of the 4 game series that included three 1-run games. San Fransisco 3, Pittsburgh 2

May 17-19 Colorado Rockies (16-23) at Pittsburgh Pirates (18-20)

May 17 Todd Helton went 3 for 5 with a home run off Zach Duke, who gave up 10 hits in 5 innings. Jason Jennings only lasted 2.2 innings and allowed 5 runs, but his bullpen saved him, however, giving up 0 runs in 6.1 innings of relief. Colorado 7, Pittsburgh 6
May 18 Conor Jackson is batting .429 as a Pirate in 6 games. Oliver Perez struck out 12 batters in 6.2 innings and only allowed 2 hits. Pittsburgh 3, Colorado 2
May 19 In the longest game for Pittsburgh so far this season, Mike Gonzalez blew his first save and Jack Wilson went 3 for 6 through 14 innings. The Rockies bullpen came through again, going 8 scoreless innings and giving up 1 hit. Colorado 4, Pittsburgh 3

May 20-22 Pittsburgh Pirates (19-22) at Oakland Athletics (26-15)

May 20
Just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!
Finally Jason Bay has a game that shows he really is my best player. Bay had 2 homers (He's now on pace for 12!) and a single that gave Pittsburgh the lead in the top of 10th of their first interleague game of the season. Pittsburgh 5, Oakland 4
May 21 This time it was Craig Wilson with 2 home runs in this 13 run Pittsburgh game. Kip Wells gave up 2 runs on 2 Bobby Kielty solo homers in 7 innings. Pittsburgh 13, Oakland 2
May 22 Jody Gerut had 3 RBI and Zach Duke lasted 7 innings, giving up 2 runs. Pittsburgh completed the sweep of 2nd best AL team to get back to a .500 record. Mike Gonzalez got his 14th save. Pittsburgh 5, Oakland 2

Team Record: 22-22

On May 13, Carl Pavano pitched a perfect game for the Yankees against the Angels. Dave Roberts has the highest batting average, Brad Fullmer is tied for the most home runs, Carl Pavano is pitching perfect games. Something is seriously wrong with this league.

May 23-25 Pittsburgh Pirates (22-22) at St. Louis Cardinals (24-18)

May 23 Jason Bay had 3 RBI and hit another home run, giving him 4 on the season. Oliver Perez improved his record to 6-2 with a great pitching performance (8 IP, 1 R, 7 K). Pittsburgh 5, St. Louis 1
May 24 In this 18 inning game, St. Louis won it on a walkoff home run by David Eckstein. The home run was given up by starter Kip Wells, who was being used in relief. Tadahito Iguchi, Conor Jackson, and Freddy Sanchez each had 3 hits. St. Louis 8, Pittsburgh 6
May 25 Rookie pitcher Tom Gorzelanny, filling in for injured 5th starter Cory Stewart gave up only 1 run in 7 innings. Ryan Doumit homered to lead off the 9th inning, giving the Pirates the one run lead. Pittsburgh 2, St. Louis 1

May 27-29 Pittsburgh Pirates (24-23) at Houston Astros (22-24)

May 27 Jody Gerut had two doubles in his 3 for 5 game, and Iguchi also contributed 3 hits, but Pittsburgh still did not give enough run support after Zach Duke's 4.2 inning, 4 run start. Houston 4, Pittsburgh 3
Note: Oliver Perez is hurt for 11 days. Bobby Bradley will take his spot in the rotation until he returns.
May 28 Kip Wells came back from his loss on the 24th with a 7.2 IP, 2 R performance. Freddy Sanchez had a double and a triple. Pittsburgh 3, Houston 2
May 29 Tadahito Iguchi had a 5 for 5 game in this 10 inning offensive battle. Conor Jackson had 3 RBI and a double. Mike Gonzalez got the win in 2 innings of relief. Pittsburgh 10, Houston 8

May 30-June 1 Chicago Cubs (30-20) at Pittsburgh Pirates (26-24)

May 30 Pittsburgh plays in yet another extra inning game, this time 15 innings. Pat Maholm gave up 1 run in 6 innings, but Scott Strickland let up 3 runs in the next inning, which led to extras. Ryan Doumit got a walk-off walk in the bottom of the 15th. Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 4
May 31 Tom Gorzellany got the loss in his second start despite only giving up 3 runs. Mark Prior and Kerry Wood combined to strike out 11 Pirates batters. Chicago 6, Pittsburgh 3
June 1 Once again, a Pittsburgh game goes to extra innings. The starters for both teams gave up no runs. Conor Jackson got the game winning RBI single in the bottom of the 14th. Pittsburgh 2, Chicago 1

Team Record: 28-25

I'd just like to mention that in one game I got Zach Duke to get 480-490 wins. I'll have to check it later. Mostly it was due to a bug that made people... not become old.

June 18 Jorge Cortes hit a home run and Conor Jackson was 2 for 3 with a double. Tom Gorzelanny went 5.1 innings and gave up 5 runs, but still got the win. Pittsburgh 6, Kansas City 5
June 19 Brad Eldred continues his hot streak with a home run and 2 RBI. Jody Gerut went 0 for 5 in his return from the DL, and Craig Wilson went 2 for 2 in his. Jason Bay hit his 6th home run. Kansas City 7, Pittsburgh 4

TRADE
PIT RP Roberto Hernandez, RP Ryan Vogelsong for ATL SP Jake Stevens
Comments: Both Hernandez and Vogelsong were just wasting away in AAA. Plus, Hernandez was making over $2 million and is 41 years old, so I really had no use for him.

PIT SS Jack Wilson for MIL SS JJ Hardy
Comments: Wilson was doing pretty bad for me (.225/.278/.351) and was making nearly $6 million. Hardy is a slightly worse fielder, but hopefully can make up for it at the plate. Hardy is only 23 compared to Wilson at 28.

June 20-22 Arizona Diamondbacks (36-33) at Pittsburgh Pirates (36-32)

June 20 Pittsburgh got their only two runs on a Conor Jackson single in the 5th inning, but it was enough with Zach Duke's pitching performance (7.2 IP, 1 R, 7 K). Pittsburgh 2, Arizona 1
June 21 Another strong pitching performance, this time by Oliver Perez (6 IP, 2 R, 5 K), helped lead to a Pittsburgh win. The Pirates had 9 hits, including 5 doubles, and a home run by Jody Gerut, his first. Pittsburgh 9, Arizona 5
June 22 Mike Gonzalez gave up 3 runs in 7th inning, raising his ERA to 1.13. Jason Bay hit a 3 run home run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Damaso Marte improves to 7-1 with the win. Pittsburgh 6, Arizona 4

Team Record: 39-32

TRADE
PIT RP Damaso Marte, SP Ian Snell, SP Victor Santos for PHI SP Cole Hamels
Comments: I'd been looking for another starter for some time, and I like this deal a lot. Marte had a 5.59 ERA and walked 19 batters in 29 innings, but he still has talent. Santos was actually doing very well for me in long relief (44.2 IP, 0.81 ERA), but I have a feeling that wouldn't have lasted.

June 24-26 Oakland Athletics (42-29) at Pittsburgh Pirates (39-32)

June 24 Cole Hamels started his first game as a Pirate and did pretty well. Hamels gave up 1 run in 6.2 innings. Conor Jackson had a double and an RBI in his 2 for 4 game. Oakland 3, Pittsburgh 2
June 25 Kip Wells went 8.1 innings without giving up a run and hit a double at the plate. Conor Jackson went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. Barry Zito only lasted 1.1 innings and gave up 5 runs. Pittsburgh 5, Oakland 1
June 26 Zach Duke (8 IP, 2 H, 0 R) got more run support than he needed, as the offense scored 10 runs on 18 hits. 6 players had multi-hit games and Ryan Doumit had 4 RBI on 2 doubles. Pittsburgh 10, Oakland 3

June 27-29 Pittsburgh Pirates (41-33) at Arizona Diamondbacks (38-37)

June 27 Conor Jackson hit his first home run as a Pirate and is batting .514 in his last 10 games. JJ Hardy went 2 for 4 and had an RBI. Oliver Perez gave up 5 runs in 5 innings and struck out 8 batters. Arizona 5, Pittsburgh 3
June 28 Tadahito Iguchi was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 RBI. Jody Gerut and Craig Wilson also had multi-hit games, but it was not enough to cover for Tom Gorzelanny's 5 runs allowed in 5.2 IP. Arizona 6, Pittsburgh 3
June 29 Cole Hamels' second Pirates start wasn't nearly as impressive as his first, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings. Craig Wilson was 2 for 5 with a homer and 3 RBI. Arizona 6, Pittsburgh 5
