When a league ends before October 31st, the contract extensions are a year off and you can release a player without buying out their contract at half the price.
Example:
1. A player is signed to 2007 for $5,000,000.
2. 2006 ends on 10/30/06.
3. Player is now in their contract year and asks for an extension.
4. If you drop the player right on 10/30/06 he will NOT cost you 2,500,000 to release him.
5. But if you wait until November to release the same player it will cost you 2,500,000.
In other words, a sweep in the World Series in a 10, 20 or 30 sim league will allow you to do this. If you time it right.
