Breaking, tragic news out of the Bronx today as GM Brian Cashman and Manager Joe Torre have died. Both were traveling from Yankee Stadium to an unknown location, and were T-boned by a city bus. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. George Steinbrenner has released a statement showing his sorrow and says now is not the time to think about baseball.
WGR 550
George Steinbrenner has done a first today, hire people with the intention to save money. Today, Kevin Mettler was hired as the GM/Manager of the Yankees. He has been a lifelong Yankee fan, and will only be paid 135,000 per year in a 3 year contract.

WGR 550 - Kevin Mettler has been active so far, buy making a handful of trades to start his career off. The first move he made brought Alfonso Soriano back to the Bronx. Going to the Nationals was Jorge Posada, Jaret Wright, Scott Procter and Octavio Dotel. This deal dropped the Yankees salary some, and landed Soriano, a potential 50-50 man.
The second move Mettler made was one to replace Jorge Posada. The Yankees traded Johnny Damon back to Boston along with Kyle Farnsworth for Jason Varitek, Mike Timlin and stud prospect Jon Lester. This deal also dropped payroll as Damon made 13 million dollars.
In his final deal before opening day, Mettler made his biggest deal. He shipped out Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui and 13,000,000 dollars to the Seattle Mariners for future ace Felix Hernandez, 24 year old SS Yuniesky Betoncourt and 2 SP prospects. The Yankees dropped 39.6 million dollars worth of payroll to the Mariners, while adding 2 future studs. After this deal, Mettler announced that Derek Jeter will be converted to third base.
Mettler has also announced his opening day roster vs. Oakland:
1.Yuniesky Betoncourt SS
2.Derek Jeter 3B
3.Bobby Abreu CF
4.Alfonso Soriano LF
5.Jason Giambi DH
6.Gary Sheffield RF
7.Craig Wilson 1B
8.Jason Varitek C
9.Robinson Cano 2B
P: Mike Mussina
The whole rotation looks like this:
1. Mussina
2. Ching Ming Wang
3. Randy Johnson
4. Felix Hernandez
5. Cory Lidle
Mariano Rivera will close, while Mike Timlin, Ron Villone and Mike Myers will do all the short relief.
The Yankees have also released several players:
P Ramiro Mendoza
P Jesus Colome
P Matt Childers
P Mark Corey
P Kris Wilson
P Tanyon Sturtze
P Aaron Small
P Tommy Phelps
OF Bubba Crosby
SS Felix Escalona
1B Andy Phillips
2B Nick Green
OF Kevin Reese
C Koyle Hill
1B Carlos Pena
C Wil Nieves
C Ben Davis
After all was said and done, the Yankees dropped their payroll to 164.3 million and still have a playoff caliber team.

This trade absolutely sucks. For both teams. Gordon and Huber are perhaps the top two prospects for the Royals....and now Gordon's stuck behind Rolen, and Huber's behind Pujols.....and the Royals only got back a decent reliever.....
Talk about throwing away two promising careers. :p

Resignings
- Bernie Williams - Bernie had a solid year for us off the bench hitting .330 with 7 homeruns in 77 games. But we don't have a use for him anymore and are sorry to announce that he will become a free agent.
- Alfonso Soriano - Soriano is our best player without question, and wants 19.4 million over 4 years. We decided to give Soriano a 3 year deal at 19.5 a year with a 1 year player option of 19.25 million.
- Miguel Cairo - Cairo is a great defensive player, but he doesn't have enough offense to play in NY. He will become a free agent.
- Gary Sheffield - Sheffield is starting the age but the productivity is still there. With that said, we don't feel Gary is worth 10 million a year and we have released him.
- Alex Sanchez - Sanchez was supposed to be our version of Dave Roberts in the playoffs, but he stole 0 bases and was caught 3 times. He was released.
- Sal Fasano - Fasano is a very capable backup, but we have no reason to pay a backup a million dollars. He is a free agent.
- Craig Wilson - Craig Wilson played very well hitting .273 with 20 home runs and was rewarded with a healthy contract. He will be paid about 23 million dollars over 5 years.
- Mike Mussina - Mussina showed he is still one of the AL's top pitchers this year and we have signed him to a 1 year, 11.9 million dollar contract.
- Mariano Rivera - Mariano Rivera is the best closer in the history of the game, and will be paid like one. We signed him to a 3 year deal where he will make 25.2 million dollars.
- Mike Timlin - Timlin had a rough year this year and is too old to play for us. He was released.
- Ron Villone - See Mike Timlin
- Sidney Ponson - Ponson performed decently this year, but wants a little too much money and he was released.

Free Agency - We dropped our payroll under 150 million before free agency and that gave us a lot of room to work here.
David Wright 3B - 7 years, 108.85 million - (.327 44 HR .671 SLG) - David Wright will start at 3rd, moving Jeter back to short, Betoncourt will move to 2nd. Robinson Cano is going to be our new left fielder and Alfonso Soriano is going to DH for us.
Chris Capuano SP - 6 years, 67.5 million - (15-10 2.92 ERA) - Capuano had a great year last year and will become our number 2 starter.
Mike Piazza C - 1 year, 13.6 million - (.322 42 HR 135 RBI) - Piazza came out of nowhere last year and lit it up in San Diego. Due to his age, we will take him year by year. After Piazza was signed, Jason Varitek was released.
Jeff Cirillo IF - 1 year, 2 million - (.265 2 HR) Cirillo is the utility player I was looking for. He has good defense and is a solid hitter. He will come off the bench next year.
Scott Linebrink - 4 years 21.2 million - (6-1 4.38 ERA .244 BAA) - Linebrink is the righty out of the bullpen we needed last year when Timlin stopped producing. He will split short relief with Mike Myers.
Danys Baez - 6 years, 30 million - (1-1 2.23 ERA .209 BAA 32 SV) - Baez will become the setup man for Mariano after having a great year last season.

Why dont you just leave soriano in left and put cano or betancourt at DH?
Or put it like this...
3rd: Betancourt
SS: Jeter
2nd: Cano
DH: Wright

Because Cano in left is better than Soriano and Wright is better than Betancourt, who is also better than Soriano.

Yankees Draft
Round 1 - LHP - Jameson Stout - 19 years old - Stout is a future stud who throws about 93 MPH. He has a lot of work ahead of him, but he should be a great pitcher.
Round 2 - 1B - Cory Nieman - 18 years old - Look for this kid in about 5 years. He needs alot of time to develop and we plan to give him all the time he needs.
Round 3 - LHP - Murrey Libby - 18 years old - Libby is a horrible player right now, but he could develop into a solid player in about 6-7 years.
Round 4 - 2B - Roberto Pagan - 17 years old - Pagan is a power hitting 2B that could become a starter in the Yankees future.
Round 5 - SS - Rudi Ulrich - 18 years old - Ulrich should become a solid MLB role player when everything is said and done.
Round 6 - 2B - Richie Connely - 17 years old - Connely will probably be a lifetime minor leaguer, but we will stick with him and see if he develops

Those home run totals seem really high. It's annoying....I get the leaguewide totals to be accurate, but not the individual totals. That's probably heavily due to the player ratings though, which won't be fixed until I completely redo everythng come the end of the regular season.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Bonds have an almost comically low health rating? As a bat the guy is still a solid .400+ OBA 20+ HR hitting guy but his health seems to be low.

In my rosters, Bond's health rating is so low because he really isn't jhealthy anymore and because he often sits games out. In simulation though, he always seems to play at least 130 games, and I've even had him play all 162 once.

Hm. Interesting. In my dynasty I considered signing Bonds to a 1 year contract due to his still strong power and eye numbers but when I saw his almost 40 health I stopped myself.

Glavine leads the majors with 12 wins and a 1.89 ERA
The Yankees shook up baseball a little bit today by trading their slugger Jason Giambi across town to the Mets for Tom Glavine and a prospect. Glavine has been unbelievable this season, going 12-1 with a 1.89 ERA. He will make his first start, which will also be his first attempt at his 300th win on Wednesday in Detroit. That will be his only start before the allstar game. Giambi has had a solid season so far hitting .287 with 17 home runs. He joins his former teammate Gary Sheffield in the middle of the Mets lineup. Craig Wilson will play 1st for the Yankees now. This deal cuts about 15 million in payroll for the Yankees.

Yankees Bolster Bullpen in Deadline Deal

Oscar Villareal will bring a much needed arm to the pen
The New York Yankees made only one deadline deal in 2007, one which brought RP Oscar Villareal to the Bronx. The 25 year old has had a rough season with a 5.75 ERA, but has good stuff and the Yankees hope that a change of scenery will help him improve. The Yankees ship out overpaid minor leaguer Carl Pavano, who had a 4.71 ERA in AAA this year. Also leaving in the deal was CF Tim Battle and 2 other minor leaguers. This move cuts 8 million in payroll for the Yankees. The Yankees have also signed CF Kenny Lofton to a 1 year deal. He will add some speed to the bench and will be a role model to younger players like Melky Cabrera.
