When playing PBP, the pitcher batting (in this case Walter Johnson), his split stats show up as .000 for average, oba, and slg. I know (even though I can't show you here) that he's hit many base hits against both righties and lefties (I've played a few games PBP with Walter Johnson pitching and know that he's had hits). It's not just this player either--it's with all my pitching staff. They all have splits of .000 for everything against both righties and lefties.

I'm fairly certain Clay said at one point that he purposely made it not calcualte split batting stats for pitchers.

Ah, ok. What's the reasoning behind that?

I can't find the post from Clay, so I dunno.

My guess is that it has to do with needing to store extra data for pitchers, and that it's ultimately not worth the cost in memory to have lefty splits for pitchers.

My guess is the space used to track batting splits for batters is used to track pitching splits for pitchers.

Pitchers don't have split ratings vs. LH and vs. RH hitters, do they?

no, all players have a skill vs. lefties and righties.

Anyway, that's what I was trying to say but you definately said it better than I did. Thanks.

No. Along with my request to have split ratings editable in the player editor, I've requested the same for pitches.

Pitcher's dont. That "skill" you see is contact and power, only for batters. The rating shown for pitchers is there batting vs. lefties/rightiies.

humm... I thought it was batting for batters and pitching for pitchers. ok, noted.

Just take a look at the ratings of pitchers...if that was the case, pitchers would really suck. :p

That is what I based my assumption on. But I just didn't recall it actually being said anywhere.

Just like for batters, you can see split Power and Contact ratings for pitchers on the Skills tab.

However, we don't store actual split data for pitchers in order to save memory. So I've fixed this in 9.44B by changing the display to show overall batting stats for pitchers (that is, to show batting stats against ALL pitchers).

Anyway, in most cases, pitchers don't have enough batting data in one season for the split stats to be statistically significant. And the decision to pinch hit for a pitcher depends a lot more on whether you want to keep him in the game to pitch -- not on his platoon tendencies.
