In Arizona there are alot of interesting stories ..... Gonzalez is having a big year hitting over 40 HR's and driving in a 100 plus runs already but what is really interesting when you look at Arizona's roster and check out their pitching stats you see that they have used numerous people to close out ball games this year ... closer by committee or tryout .... with Matt Mantei down I understand the dilemna they were in but on a contender you expect them to have a dominant closer .... heck Toronto in the 90's had a situation where they had two in Duane Ward and Tom Henke .... the Diamond Backs have:
Matt Mantei (often injured) ... lots of K's ... 2 sv's
Bret Prinz ... has the lowest ERA on team and sv 8 of 10
B. Kim ... has outstanding KO/BB ratio and hardly gives up a hit
etc etc ....
**** even Greg Swindell was tried in the closers role. How ridiculous is that ??? Obviously Kim is talented enough to be a closer and with his numbers he will want to move on and get the permanent closer job elsewhere if Arizona is going to go back to Mantei ..... uhmmmm soooo anyway ... interesting situation in the Arizona bullpen .... some talent there but they really could use Mantei ..... how hurt is he and when can he come back ???
Two Aces ...... hehe ..... a nice pair to have .... the best pair to have ..... Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling are putting up insane numbers. They are so good I have to post the stats even if you already know them.
Randy Johnson
16-5 2.29 ERA 185 INN. 127 H 52 BB 277 KO
Curt Schilling
18-5 2.87 ERA 197.2 INN 181 H 31 BB 224 KO
My God it is insane. They have over 500 KO's combined together and it is unbelievable that they are able to lose a combined 10 games together. They should never lose considering the few walks they have accumulated.
My point in mentioning how well these two are doing is to also show how poorly the rest of the staff is doing. Brian Anderson has some decent talent and so does Albie Lopez but they have never put it together. Lopez is pitching well though since coming to Arizona and hopefully that continues for the Diamond Backs sake .... uhmm Batista he has decent numbers as a starter but walks to many batters .... Robert Ellis doesn't look like too much .... so it is imperative that the Diamond Backs had these two aces because they aren't really getting any decent starting pitching from anywhere else ....
The Diamond Backs are really missing the speed element from their lineup and that could haunt them in the playoffs when they need to generate a single run to win a game. It is nice to have a guy who can hit the long ball but you need to manufacture runs sometimes ....
