John Smoltz has posted some decent numbers this year and is now 1 for 1 as a regular season closer. I only saw him take care of Barry Bonds which is a big deal but uhmm does anyone have an opinion of him as a closer ?? Does he have the makeup to do it ??? Dennis Eckersley was a decent starting pitcher who made the transition to closer and therefore it is possible that a pitcher like Smoltz who can rack up K's too definitely has a shot at being a good closer .... what do you think ??
I was surprised to see that Smoltz has only won 159 games in his career as I thought he would have at least gotten to the 200 win mark. His career ERA and KO/BB ratio suggest that he is a much better pitcher than his record indicates but oh well ....
It is nice to see a pitcher recognize when he needs to try something new or needs to retire and uhmmm Smoltz recognized he was breaking down physically and needs a less taxing job ..... he will pitch less innings but is going to be putting alot of stress on that arm when he is out there ... closers have to throw the gas ..... well not all of them .... Eckersley again is a good example but he was special .... he had pin point location .....
We are all cheering for Smoltz .... I am anyway .....
