View Full Version : Player attitude question.
Does a player's attitude effect his performance, and, if so, is it possible to change him? For instance, I have an excellent player who "hates Philadelphia and wants to be traded". I sure would like for him to enjoy playing for my team, he's one of my best players. How do I make him want to stay with the Phillies, or doe it really matter?

Does a player's attitude effect his performance
Yes. You can adjust how much the effect is though in the League Editor. Set it to -100% for it to absolutely never affect performance.

You can go into the player editor and edit his personality traits until he fits your team better.

On the Personality page, whats his grade with your team? Without cheating (ie. the player editor way), the only way to change this is to surround him with players with a similar personality.
Thanks Houston. Don't think I want to mess with player editor during this game. Guess I'll try to move him to a team and get a player more compatable with my team.
On his personality page he is an F...but dog gone it he's rated 90/95, just 25 years old and it says he's "one of the best players at his position in the National League." Tough spot for my GM (me).

I usually just ignore personality...its effect isn't that major, or even visible unless you raise the effect in the league editor.

Yea, I agree with Houston. The effect of personality conflicts is very minor, even when the player is given an "F" grade. Even moving personality to +100%, it'll only reduce a players effectiveness marginally.

You are right for the way the game works at the moment but I feel it is implicityly wrong that personality has such little effect ( except on negociiations) - how a player feels & communicates should affect greatly his abilities even if it is a short term effect.

French, it's very rare for a player's personality/happiness to extremely affect his performance. I can't even think of a real life case. I would like to see personality/happiness be more relevent though in the following ways:
1) Outright refusal to sign with a team.
2) Demanding a trade.
3) Perhaps "reports" every once in a while that say something like "Shea Hillenbrand is disturbing the clubhouse dynamics. To ensure a happier clubhouse, you may want to explore the option of trading him."

Maybe not affect his personal perfomance BUT the teams ,your Hillebrand example is excellent after his trade the Jays went on a tear & finished 2nd in the East.Weaver's performance over this year - in LA he was terrible because of lack of confidence:mis match with Sciosia but when traded to St Louis he "meshed" with the club & performed better
Personality also affects (especially catchers) pitching results - look at the number of defesive catchers who are kept on because they call a "good game"
But I agree with you on the fact that players would do 1 of the 3 suggestions if they "feel" unwanted/uneeded

I don't know if you can contribute the Blue Jays to Hillenbrand. Hillenbrand was hitting great while in Toronto. I think they more than likely finished in second palce because Boston sucked it up. Weaver didn't perform much better in St. Louis. His WHIP was about equal. Sure, his ERA dropped a full run, but his peripherals all stayed around the same. I'd contribute the ERA drop to the National League sucking.

After reading the chapter on that in Baseball Between the Numbers, I'd have to say that catchers don't have too great of an effect on pitchers. And the effect they do have, I wouldn't call it their "personality."

If you want uniformity among your team personality-wise then just change all the values to zero.
