View Full Version : Unable to Reach Sportsmogul

For some reason, all day I was unable to get to sportsmogul.com yet I was able to get to BMO.

This is the first time I've been able to get in all day.

I got a "The page cannot be displayed" every time I've tried, yet every other website I tried worked.

Just saying. :D

Yeah.. We've been having this problem off and on for weeks with the web server for the main website and vbulletin dying horribly on a daily basis for no apparent reason. We're not sure why it keeps doing this, but today we just blew it and didn't notice it was down until I got an email from another user just now. For some reason, the BMO webserver isn't affected....just this one. We're still trying to figure out what's going on. My personal technical opinion is that the server is haunted, or a vampire, or both, but Clay and Ian won't let me submerge it in holy water just yet or jam an ashwood spike into the CD-ROM drive. They're no fun. :)

I'm sorry about the site being down. I know it's a frustrating pain...because it's a frustrating pain for us too. :)

Maybe adding another moderator or two that are here more often would help with the lag in finding out about these crashes sooner? I pm'e two of them but they must not have checked in yet today. One user pm'ed me that it's been down since the wee hours of this morning.

Ditto - I am on another continent so I log in at weird (US wise) times the thing was down 15 hours! But I started trying 5am EST (2am PST) which is like 11 am my time - does that make sense ? I sent an email to Clay when I eventually found his address but that must have been what 6 hours after the breakdown

sorry for the lateness:o

Anyone. So long as it's someone who comes here frequently. I come several times a day most days. I'd do it, if you're here a lot you'd be good too Houston.

You can still work on it. That's what I did. Just write it in a Word document and save it and then copy/paste when the site works.

For what it's worth, I ran into trouble late Saturday night (EDT) and was shutout for about an hour . . .today, as you know, was a total mess.
I played with my baseball cards instead today . . . **** I'm just a really old kid I guess.

That was the 3rd night in 2-3 weeks that I haven't been able to log on (I tried probably many times each occurance, but I know that at 0200-0400 Pacific time it was down). Last time it happened, I went to a site and pinged and tracerouted www.sportsmogal.com and there was definitely a clear path.

Bah, I just remembered I have a good ping and trace utility on this machine, didn't have to find a site for it, oh well.

I was just looking at Who's Online (http://forum.sportsmogul.com/online.php) at of the 134 'guests', I would guess about 115 of them are Yahoo! Slurp Spider (with a few MSNBot Spider and Google spiders also). Could that be causing problems? It seems like they would at least be eating a lot of bandwidth.

Personally, I e-mailed Dee at 6 in the morning on sunday morning, pacific time. About an hour to an hour and a half after it went down:

Thanks for letting us know! We've been having problems with the server
now for weeks. We're still not sure why it's dying, but we'll keep
poking at it. :)

Dee has said in the past that the best way to let them know about a board problem is to e-mail her (and I sent it to Clay and Ian as well, just in case...)

BMO is on a differnt server than the site and forum, from what I understand.
(and, there's aparently some bad history that caused that to come about...)

it's a common complaint. the people running Yahoo! are a bunch of pricks too, but the thing is that in order for a site like this to be indexed by search engines, you can't really limit them. from reading (a few hundred) topics about the subject on the vBulletin forums, bots have a very low priority anyway. So, if the actual forum traffic increases, the bots will simply disappear.

Oh I said that because IT did go down on Friday(or Saturday?) when BM when down as well (between 11 GMT & 12.45 GMT)

humm... i didn't know about that. The timeframe though makes it sound like a backup started and completed, which is a neccesary evil. It would rather suck if that server crashed (hard drive died or something) and more than a couple of hours worth of data were lost...

Generally the same as I am though. We're up and online overnight, in US time. Me, I work all night. you're in Europe.
*shrug*

those are the non-peak times for most US web sights. From what i've seen 4-5 AM EST (which is 1-2 AM PST, and... 11-12 GMT? I think. That's figuring GMT = +8 from EST) is non-peak for the forum here. There's almost always less than 10 people online during that timeframe. I'm willing to bet that the web site page(s) aren't any different traffic wise either. Therefore, that's when most web server software will choose to do backups.
In terms of BMO, there's no sims going on at that time, from what I can tell. That coupled with (most likely) similar traffic patterns lead me to conclude that that's when a backup is going to occur.

Is IMing Mogulsports a good way to report a downage?

Dee Dreslough
11-13-2006, 10:28 PM
If he's there and listening to his IM, it's a good way to report an outage, but I would follow up with email to me and Clay too. I don't use IM most of the time myself, so IMing me's not much help. :) I do check my email regularly, though. So does Clay.
