This is ridiculus!

My LF Kerry Robinson just finished a season with 66 errors, and my C Geronimo Gil had 33 errors and 51 PB. I'm not denying they are lousy defensively, but they are lousy beyond reality. I'm not sure what the MLB record for errors is at their respective positions is, but I'm guessing they both set Major League records by a long shot. The really funny part is my team has managed to make the playoffs all 4 years in it's existance (including 2 World Series, one of which in these 2 did their best Rico Carty impersonations), Robinson has started in LF 3 seasons, and Gil has started for 1.5 seasons.

These 2 comedians are both on STL in 2002 & Beyond league.

I looked up the worst of the worst on mlb.com for the past 3 seasons (I'd have looked up more but I'm on a slow connection and mlb.com isn't the fastest site), and here is what I found.

Most errors in a single season 1999-2001: Jose Valentin at SS with 36

Most errors by an OF (same time period): Vladimir Guerrero 19

Most errors by a C: Todd Hundley 16

Most PB by a C: Jason Varitek 26

I did find a guy who committed 115 errors in 130 games at 3B in 1890.

weren't they still playing barehanded in 1890?

WOW!!!

That is total the opposite of my SD in Western20... last season I had seven position players without an error for the first THREE weeks... and the league has 83 C, 30 2B, 10 3B!, and 12 SS with CAREER fielding percentages over .990. This seems really high... and just the opposite of what you are going through... out

i moved cliff floyd from left field hoping his fielding would get better...he had 68 errors in left field one year and 41 the year before...now at first base he had 114 errors...i don't care how bad a fielder you are 114 errors is excessive! In case you're wondering i'm Florida in the same league as bad ash...i also noticed when i was browsing through another league that one catcher (thru Aug 5) had 0 errors but had 70 passed balls ...now thats alot of passed balls

In League 2002 and Beyond, we now have a SS who had 220 errors last season. I think I could probably play SS and not have 220 errors in a season. This seems a little far-fetched to me - even though his ratings are terrible.

The bone-handed shortstop has a D+ fielding by my scouts... I would hate to see the shortstop with a D- or F fielding. (Maybe a guy in an inflatable mascot suit)

C-rated fielders are hovering around .910 or .920 in fielding percentage in "2002 and Beyond" (for outfielders and middle infielders)...I'm thinking that those numbers aren't exactly middle-of-the-road.

Maybe those guys need to become "D"s, and to have more variance in the "B" range?

These incredible error reports have been posted for well over a month now and there has been no response from Sports Mogul. How about a response from you, Clay?

Is there a glitch that needs to be worked on or what?

I would also like to add that it's not just fielding that's off the wall these days. Pitching and batting performance seem less related to their ratings than ever before and I think this is a real shame.

Here's an example of a hitter. Ben Mehrabini is on my Arizona team in 2002 and Beyond. I just signed him to play 3B for the rest of the season.

Two years ago he hit .297 with 2 doubles and 3 triples and 48 homers. That's right 48 homers with only 2 doubles. Heck, he had more triples than doubles!

His lifetime stats over approximately 4 complete seasons are 13 doubles and 7 triples with 128 homers while hitting .280. The guy has almost ten times as many homers as doubles! That's ludicrous!

And that's not all. This guys has A+ contact but has never hit over .300 even once. He has only B power but is averaging over 30 homers a season.

I have B or B+ contact hitters with better lifetime batting averages than he has and have A+/A/A-/B+ power hitters not averaging 30 homers a season. What the heck is going on?

A response from Sports Mogul would be much appreciated. Thanks.

And more comments from players would be very welcome as well.

In 2002 and beyond my 1B has been making 45-50 errors a year for the past 5-6 seasons. I just took over the team and did not know his history. Another owner filled me in on his history: he used to be a Gold Glove RF that was moved to 1B and prompty forgot how to catch the ball.

RF is much more difficult to play than 1B yet his errors went through the roof. Makes no sense to me especially since 1B is routinely used in the majors as a good place to hide a less than slick fielder....

I'll point this out to James and Clay...

Sorry for the delay.

Clay has a patch in the works.

Basically what seems to be happening is that the rookies are too good. Their predicted stats are A material. But they are playing against other players who are also A material. Consequently, they perform at average levels.

Clay has a patch he's testing for the CD-ROM game that uses the rookies.ini file to fine-tune the quality of the rookies.

When we think we have it right, we'll move it into BBMO, too.

Cheers
James

Thanks for the response, James, but it seems like you are only covering part of the problem. If I'm not mistaken from my own comments and those of several other players in this thread it's also veteran players who are not performing anywhere near their ratings.

Could you please address the issue of veteran player performances being all over the place with respect to their ratings?

In addition, the problem of huge numbers of errors for certain players has to be a glitch.

Another glitch has to be the situation of Ben Mehrabini in 2002 and Beyond where he had only 2 doubles but 48 homers in one season. If a guy hits 48 homers I would think he would have at least 20 doubles. I know you sometimes create players who hit a lot more homers than doubles but a ratio of 24 homers to 1 double seems super glitchy to me.

For the most part I think the revised online game is better than the previous version but it would be a considerable improvement over the previous version if these glitches were addressed and corrected.

If the vets keep running into overrated rookie pitchers and hitters, they're going to end up worst of all.

And if all those overpowered rookies end up being ranked about the same, that would account for the crazy fluctuations (like flipping a coin 1000 times)

I agree, the explanation makes sense. If you normally have 20-25 guys in a league with A power and then suddenly you have 40 or 60 or 80, it makes it harder to translate "letter grades" into potential stats. I routinely do stats overviews of my leagues to check on how my players compare, and I had noticed that there weren't appreciably more hitters hitting .350 or tagging 50 homers, just more guys who looked like they SHOULD be.

Not that this makes the bug any less frustrating, it's just kinda nice to know that we've at least identified the problem.

I will forward this to James. He should be able to tell you what is going on. Thank you for your support and we apologize for this.

I have a player in the Sports Mogul league with 116 errors in 84 games on the Phillies. It is Ben Frank, he started as a LF with a D rating for fielding. So I moved him to first base thinking that it would go up since first base is an eaiser position and teams usually just to hide a weak defensive player at first. Well after he converted after 2 seasons his fielding rating went down to D- and he has all those errors. From reading above someone posted that the record in the real MLB is only like in the 30's. So someone with an F rating should get around that, no where near 116! By the end of the season this guy will have over 200 and he is a good offensive player so I wanna keep playing him. Too bad the NL has no DH. Can anything be done about these insane error totals?

I have a player who has 25 erros in around 36 games. He' an outfielder. He has a .342 avg though, so I dont mind too much, but his stats dont indicate he would have that many errors.

Ben Franks numbers in my current league, total errors and fielding percent. All games played in RF, he has a fielding rating of D.

2009 57 .697
2008 38 .624
2007 55 .663
2006 61 .701
2005 60 .684

Career: 271 errors for a fielding percentage of .697 in almost 5 full seasons, ouch.

That would be a nice homerun total and slugging percentage for him, unfortunately it's not.

on pitching and hitting, but not on fielding...

is a great hitter...the only problem is he is "bad" fielder...at first base i had him start for 61 games or so and he had 29 errors at first base!
