Running through the bar graphs of the individual player stats in their profiles. This will obviously show how they rank among the league averages, but will also show fluctuations in league-wide stats, year by year.

Good idea. It would have to have some sort of qualifiers though. For instance, if you're looking at a past season, the league average would have normal qualifiers (those who qualified for batting title or something ERA title or something). Only those who qualified would be calculated for the league average. As for the current season, some sort of formula would have to be devised to include/exclude players. You could use the current formula for batting titles (3.1 plate appearances per scheduled team game), but not quite sure what you would do with pitchers. Maybe it's better to just leave the current year's average off of the chart until the season is completed.

YOu don't need qualifiers to get a league average. Just add up all the hits and dvidie by all the at bats (for batting average)

True about the league average, Houston. I took the idea a different way than I think it was intended and you took it for. My idea was more for the possibility of including a league average black line of qualified players--maybe all players with above a certain # of at-bats, all third baseman, all left-handed batters, all batters in AL/NL/MLB, you get the idea. That's why I mentioned the qualifiers, to differentiate between just the league average and the league average of whoever you want to compare your player to. I know that this comparisons like this are available in sortable stats and that you could graph these things yourself (trust me, I have), but I like the idea of a simpler, more easily available format. I still like the idea of having a black line as the league/MLB average though, if that's easier and simpler to program, which I'm guessing it is.
