I sometimes have players who have stats that suggests they might be suited to play a different position.
For example I might have a 1B with great Range, Arm and Fielding but my 3B has a worse arm and his range is average. I would probably choose to switch them on Defense since the 1B has attributes better suited for 3B.
Also sometimes I will have RF with poor arms while my LF has a cannon. Once again it might make sense to flip flop them.
My question is does the game asess a penalty for playing a player "out of position" or does it merely uses the defensive stats to determine effectiveness?

I have found that when I change a player's position, his ratings at the new position change to reflect the change. In other words, a first-baseman with A+ defensive ratings across the board is an A+ defensive player FOR A FIRST BASEMAN. Switching his position would change his ratings.
For example, I had a A+/A-/A+ rightfielder whom I played at CF for a few seasons - once his listed position changed to "CF", his defensive ratings changed to B+/B-/A+. This makes sense because CF is more difficult to play than RF.
In other words, switching a player to a more challenging position (such as going from 1B to 3B) doesn't work as well as you might think, in my experience.

Well what happens when a player has more than one position? A 1B/C for example or 2B/SS.\? WHich position does the letter grade reflect? His natural position, the most recently learned????
What about the generic IF or OF designating. Is there a separate scale for that?
It would seem strange to have letter grades based on position. Arm strength is arm strength if the game engine used different scales for different positions it would get confusing qite quckly.

If you open up the player bio, near the top it says his "True" position or the position with which the ratings are based. Though he may be eligibile at two positions, only one pos's D will show on the card.

I have an excellent RF who is listed as playing OF. He is great both offensively and defensively. How big an issue would it be be to switch him? Would there be a big penalty?
This particular player is a 30 year old (or so) major leaguer. If I took an 18 year old minor leaguer and switched them, I assume that they would learn the position more quickly.
Yes?
And is it a safe assumption that young players improve faster than older players? So an 18 year old player would improve faster than a 25 year old?
Thanks!

an average fielding 3rd baseman to first and his ratings really jumped up...i think he went to (A range b fielding) or something like that(he was a c/ c+ third baseman)

I was not suggesting that the game had a different set of ratings for each position. What I was suggesting is that when a player spends enough time at a position that it becomes his official one, his ratings change to reflect the difficulties of the new position. When I change LFs or RFs to CF, their ratings decrease. Changing a SS to a 3B usually makes his ratings increase a bit. Etc.
What bothers me is that if I change my 3B to a 1B, he cannot play 3B anymore (i.e. if I put him there, he is a 1B playing 3B, not a true 3B). The game needs to reflect multi-positional players. Edgardo Alfonzo is a 2B AND a 3B, I should not be penalized for playing him at either of those positions.

i have him in almost every season i have done....and usually move him from third to second..or the other way...i cant remember what hes listed at. In every season his defense remains A+ A+ A+ or near that....while batting a solid .320 and 20 hrs....so ive had no difficulty at all with that
