I don't know if this is an actual bug, but since I haven't ever seen it happen before, it probably is. After the second year of my game, two of my pitchers dropped way off. Phillip Hughes had been 83/94 and Casey Janssen had been something like 85/88. Now this is what they are:

Yeah, it hapepns. It's part of "Draft Predictability"

Yes but they were having pretty decent seasons, it's not like the scout was way off

Draft Predictability makes it so developing players are somewhat unpredictable, just in real life. Rick Ankiel is a guy I always bring up when people post these sorts of threads. He had a great rookie season, and bam, fell off a cliff. Bud Smith is another. In the League Editor, you can adjust this setting, making prospects more or less predictable.

HGM already basically said everything, but I just wanted to reiterate that this isn't actually a bug. It could possibly use some tweaking... but I personally don't think that it needs to be tweaked at all.

Prospects are a risk. It's really that simple. Things like this actually happen quite a bit in reality.

Who remembers Todd Van Poppel?

I see. I thought draft predictability was more like the chances that more good players are drafted in the later rounds because it is harder to predict who's gonna be good.

Nope. I've been kind of hoping that Clay would change the name to something else, precisely because of this sort of confusion. I think HGM suggested just that right out of the gate, when the feature was introduced late last year.

Is there an a way to make good players are drafted in the later rounds because it is harder to predict who's gonna be good this happened or no?

Yup! That's draft predictability. Increase that, and there will be more late round picks who end up being stars.

I also am continuing to tweak with how players "fall off a cliff". Ankiel and Smith are great examples of hot prospects flaming out (Todd Van Poppel anyone?), and I want a game that reflects that fact of baseball. But I think it would also be more fun, as a game, if you there was sometimes evidence that clued you in to something like this happening.

Cool, I can't wait to see what you come up with. Overall, I really like draft predictability. I think it accomplishes exactly what it's supposed to, in that you don't know for sure that your prospects will develop well just like in real life.

I think that you nailed the main problem with it right on the head though, in that there's nothing that really gives you a sense of what just happened to a guy who suddenly has lost all of his potential.

maybe you coul do something like if you have a good scouting department they might notice things such "Phillip Hughes is too predictable in his pitch choice at times" or "Jose Valverde(just an example) has low confidence in his pitches". Things like that even something like "John Doe tends to slack off during games."

I Don't know if that be much of a help but it would be a way to sort of give a small sign.

you sure this isnt a bug cause i had a pitcher who was in the mid 90s and got hurt for 5 days and now his rating is an 83? he is a fictional player that the cpu created not sure if that means anything

Ratings drop and raise throughout the season. It's not a bug.

Also,

I'd like to point out that that is actually true. There's a chance that the 66/72 guy you draft in the last round ends up being good. It just works the other way as well - that 56/96 guy might end up topping out at 70.

Add another area(S), like scouting, that one allocates money toward, call it coaching or training - that effects how players progress - or one to players, call it work ethic or makeup....
