Roger Clemens is a Yankee again. During the seventh-inning stretch at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, Roger Clemens announced to the crowd that he has rejoined the club and will get back to the mound "soon." Clemens pitched for the Yankees from 1999-2003.
Heh. I was hopin' he'd go to Boston, just to mix it up.

I was at the game today when he announced this. It was pretty sweet. During the 7th inning stretch, Bob Sheperd came on and asked for everybody's attention to be focused on the press box and the video screen, and as soon as Clemens appeared the crowd went nuts and I could barely hear anything Clemens was saying. The only thing I made out was "It's a privelage to be back" and then the scoreboard flashed "Roger Clemens is now a Yankee."
I was sitting on the third base line and looked up to the press box and saw him standing there. Pretty friggen cool.

Your point?
Let's have a look-see at the standings...
14-15. Thats a losing record. For a team that pays out double what all the other teams pay out, and 5 games out of first.

We had 11-19 record in 2005 in about this point and was like more than 10 freaking games behind the first place Orioles. Guess what? We still won 95 games that year with division title. We had some starters out of the early April (Moose, Wang with big hole on 5th spot)... if they can stay healthy, it looks very possible to win division

Yeah, money's a very good way to convince players to come to your team instead of another team, and when you're bathing in cash, you can afford to spend it.
F him  He's playing for a Yankee hat on his plaque, not a ring.
Huh? When the time comes that he goes into the HoF, he could have already chosen to be shown as a Yankee--he played for them before. Or has there been some HoF policy or something here that I'm missing?
I'm not defending Clemens--while I respect his talent, he's never been one of my favorites--but I don't understand this particular criticism.

JUst sounds like Sour grapes by the fans of teams Clemens didn't choose. It was kind of a given considering his friendship with Andy P and now the Yanks will be marching to Oct with a smile on their face!!!!!

Well ast least they are taking a chance to get back to the Series. Unlike the Marlins who sell all their best players and insure it will be a once every decade World Series.

The Marlins are one of the most boggling teams there are...they do, like you say, sell off there talent however they keep a hold of a few good players to basically waste their career to draw a few fans in.
RickD
05-08-2007, 11:49 AM
See that's why I like the Yankees...sure they may drop some bombs every now and then but overall they try to bring in some of the best talent available instead of selling them off.

They actually (usually) do the same thing in that they sell their youth off, the difference is that they do it to bring in the big guns ! ! The Marlins (and teams like them) do it to lower payroll with the hopes that they can compete a (few) years down the line with a low payroll and young team.

I dont fault the Yanks for doing what they do...I do, however, prefer the way my Minnesota baseball Twins do it by having youth and a low payroll by way of farming but if the Twins had an owner who was willing to pay any cost to win, I would be fine with that too.

The Hall of Fame Committee chooses what hat the player wheres on his plaque now. I don't know what criteria they use, but the player has no say.

Hall of Fame officials now determine the cap a player "wears" on his plaque in Cooperstown. For Sutter, that announcement is expected to be made at Wednesday's press conference.

Actually a player can ask for what team they would prefer going in the hall with but the Hall looks at numbers and where the player spent the bulk of their time or had the most "records, etc." They then make the final decision which may or may not line up with the players request.
Also the Yanks are now bent on keeping youth as the Boss has aged and taken less total control!

Wow interesting. I remeber when Molitor was elected he made a big announcement at Miller park that he would go in as a Brewer. They must have changed it since then. I see Nolan Ryan has a Rangers cap on his plaque.

he will help out the rotation greatly but in the 7th or 8th inning hes got to pass the ball on to somebody but who? Rivera? hes shaky at the moment. lets see who else do they have... meyers i think? not doing good. look i can go on and on but when you have almost no relief your in big trouble.

I am a Yank Fan but realistically I don't see Clemens going past 5 but heck half the starters this year haven't done that.

At this point, I as a Red Sox fan do not want Clemens going into the Hall as a Red Sox. He had his change to nail that part of his legacy back down and he didn't take it. It would ring very hollow to see him up on that platform with a B on his cap now. If he wants to go in as a Yankee, let him -- that's what he is right now anyway.

I do not think that New York's season will stand or fall on Rajah Clemens.
if the New York rotation without Rajah can stand up to Boston then the New York rotation without Rajah can stand up to Boston maybe a little better.
If the New York rotation without Rajah can't stand up to Boston, Rajah won't change that -- he only pitches his 6 innings 1 day in 5 and against Boston, maybe twice at most all season.
You would honestly have done better to spend your money on a rubber-armed long man or used Kei Igawa in that role, since he seemed to approach pitching in relief in a way that was actually better than he did as a starter.
RickD
05-11-2007, 06:55 PM
I agree that Igawa looks better as a long-relief role but that would be an awful expensive long-relief man!

From what I just heard today (granted, it was a TV "analyst", but still...), The Yankees aren't actually paying Clemens yet. I guess that the contract which he signed, they don't owe him anything except for the games in which he actually plays.

His major league contract kicks in the day of his call up on the 40 man roster & is back tracked to the day of the signing with the pro rata difference paid by the Yankees * (MLB.com website) however TO PLAY in the minors he is signed to a minor league contract paying "him" the AAA salary
* thus he is OWED approx 1.2 million $ so far BUT will be paid ONLY when he is called up some time next week
