View Full Version : The birth of the Mariners

The Mariners were created as a direct result of a lawsuit. In 1970, in the aftermath of the Seattle Pilots purchase and relocation to Milwaukee by future Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig, the City of Seattle, King County, and the State of Washington (led by attorney general and future U.S. Senator Slade Gorton) sued the American League for breach of contract.

The lawsuit continued until 1976. At trial, the American League offered to give Seattle an expansion baseball franchise in return for dropping the suit. The details were ironed out over the next year.

The Mariners played their first game on April 6 1977 to a sold-out crowd of 57,762 at the Kingdome, losing 7-0 to the California Angels. The early history of the team during the 1970s and 1980s is characterized by perennial non-achievement.

In the team's inaugural season of 1977, pitcher Diego Segui, in his last major league season, became the only player to play for both the Pilots and the Mariners.

I am looking to change the course of this team starting with the founding year in 1977. The settings are as follows:

Game 1:
In the first game of team history, the Mariner's staff ace, 26 year old Glenn Abbott tossed a no-hitter! He was 1 BB from pitching a perfect game, going 9 IP with 3 K's.

Dave Collins: 0/4, 0 BB, 2 K
---Larry Milbourne: 0/1, 0 BB, 0 K
Steve Braun: 2/3, 1 BB, 0 K
Ruppert Jones: 1/3, 1 BB, 0 K, 1 R
Joe Lis: 1/3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR
Dan Meyer: 0/4, 0 BB, 1 K
Bill Stein: 1/3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 R
Craig Reynolds: 0/3, 1 BB, 1 K
Bob Stinson: 1/3, 1 BB, 1 K
Tommy Smith: 1/4, 0 KK, 2 K, 1 RBI

Facing Bill Singer of Toronto, a team who is also having their team opener, pitched a very good game with 8 IP and 10 K with 3 runs scored. However while he threw a good game, it was simply not as good enough.

Struck by the injury bug! 3 major players for our pitching staff - Staff ace Candelaria, unofficial staff ace Rick Jones, and short reliever Bob Galasso, have been injuried. Bob for 3 months, Rick for 1 month, and Candelaria for an astounding 14 months due to a torn rotator cuff!

Due to this, Eckersley, who has forcefully taken over the closer role, has been moved into the starting rotation after 4 saves, 13.1 IP, 10 K, and a 0.00 ERA. Romo, who, after being knocked out of the closer role gained back his control, has regained the closer position.

Another injury has knocked Andre Thorton out for 3 months. In his place, hot prospect Delgado Puchy has been called up and put into the middle of this offense infront of Jim Rice.
