View Full Version : Has this been covered?

With all the talk about bankrupt owners and small market teams, I just got an idea. Apologies if this has been covered already. I was resigning a few free agents, because with some smart moves and a lot of luck (I think) I have turned my A's team around the corner. Right now I am 44-43, tied for the division league. Not great, but not terrible considering my measly 150 million point payroll. That's neither here nor there. But, anyhow I was signing free agents and I noticed a couple of guys who are performing quite well, but asking for less than what they are currently getting. I chopped 20 points off the payroll by signing these two guys to more sensible contracts. Would it be possible in the game to have this happen more often? That is, being able to restructure contracts in the middle of the contract instead of just the free agent season. Via deferred payments and such.

ps-Once again, I realize that this suggestion may be a programming nightmare and I don't want to make anyone's life difficult, but I just thought this may be a good idea. :D

shawn,
You can renegotiate contracts as long as the player is in his final year of his contract. If a player is performing very well he will want more points, and if he is slumping he may want less, not always though. Usually it is best to re-sign in the beginning of the year because they will generally sign for less points, again not always.

If I sign a guy for 3 years for 20 points per season I think his salary should remain at 20 points for the remainder of the contract and not change once i resign him for a few more years. As is now i have to pay a guy who was supposed to be making 1 pt for the rest of the season 48 points because i signed him for a 7 year deal. I signed him early because i knew his asking price was bound to go up the longer i waited. I shouldnt be penalized for signing my players early (nor should i get a break if a guy asks for less). I should pay them exactly what I sign them for. This may be a lot of work to mess with, but it would be more accurate. The way things are now is fair, just a little strange that i sign a guy for a one year deal worth 30 pts and end up paying him 55 pts cause i got to him early.
Tell me what you think,

you can sometimes sign him immediately to a contract for much less money(pts)...it's a risk though because if you don't sign before the season starts it will cost you if he doesn't get hurt...

If you do sign a player to a 3 year deal at 20 points, after the three years are up you can than renegotiate with that player. If he has been an outstanding player during the last 3 years he will demand a lot of points, if he has been average he will ask for an average amount....not always though...some players are greedy ;)
If the player you signed to a 1 point deal for 1 year, well you can renegotiate with him at any time during the season since he was only signed for 1 year. If he turns around and asks for 48 points for 7 years I would suggest you lower the amount of years you want to sign him for. That player will become a FA at the end of the year if you don't sign him.
So, the players are playing for what you signed them for, but if you only sign him to a 1 year deal he will be gone at years end, unless you re-sign him.
I try to find young players that need a year or two more to develop and sign them to long term deals, because they sometimes turn out to be good players, and if not, then your not stuck with an outrageous salary.

John,
I guess what I was trying to say was that the current system does not actually use correct contract extensions. This is only the case when resigning a guy on your own team during the season. When I sign a player to a contract extension, that player's salary immediatly changes. So if its the first month of a season and i sign a guy to a longer deal then i start paying his new salary now. In real life the player doesnt get paid the extension ammount until the extension starts.
so... player A has one year left on his contract and i resign him to a higher price over 3 years. The rest of his original contract should finish before his salary changes. I mean... I just signed a guy to an extension, I shouldnt be ripping up his old contract. I know this is how the game works, but I think it would be better if it were changed.
