View Full Version : 11.10 Expansion teams not always added to Amateur Draft

Sorry I've been away for awhile, so if this has been mentioned recently....

Steps leading to problem -

- I create a new team to add to the league (e.g. Vancouver Mushers in the AL West). It readjusts the schedule, etc... all seems to be fine....
- Do a fantasy draft so that I don't get stuck with a team full of rookies - Draft low salaried, 70's & 80's rated guys to start.
- Start playing the season, all goes well until the Amateur draft. draft screen comes up, but doesn't let me draft as Vancouver, In fact, it automatically drafts for everyone in the league. When I look for Vancouver draft picks - there are none :(
- I finish the year and start the next year - When the amateur draft rolls around, Vancouver has a spot and I can select draft picks.

It seems that when a new team is added, somehow it isn't added to the "amateur draft module" for the first year.

- BTW - won the World Series the 2nd year with a team payroll of $50M - picked 1 HR hitter, 2 Stud starters, 1 good reliever, and a cast of decent (78-84) supporting players.

Thanks,

I've noticed this with expansion teams too but I don't think it's a bug necessarily; rather I think it's one of those "unwritten rules" within Mogul that aren't in the documentation but are still in force, much like not being able to trade a free agent you sign for the first year you own him. Look at it this way - when you created your expansion team you were given a bunch of rookies, hopefully at least 3-4 of which have decent potential. There's your amateur draft for your first year.

There is no artificial trade barrier (http://forum.sportsmogul.com/showpost.php?p=630927&postcount=25), beerchaser. In the linked example, I went out of my way to make the trade happen, but I just realized that I had one happen w/o trying in my current game. I signed SP Josh Stewart on 11 Nov 98 (after the beginning of FA) and traded him on 3 Jun 99. (See below screenshots.)

You're correct, WW, but this is an easy fix. There is one step that precludes all of those you listed: sim until the end of the World Series. The day after the WS ends, and before the FA period begins, add your teams. Do everything else exactly the same, and come June, you'll get your picks.

jonnymo, I remember that post, that's when I first started with BM last fall and was still learning my way around, not that I'm an expert now by any means. I'm a little more comfortable with the FA issue now than I was then, understanding things a little better, but I don't know that I'll ever be completely comfortable with the way that facet of the game is structured.

I agree. I'm looking forward to Son of Tradezilla, or even Tradezilla vs. Super-Mechatradezilla. :p

Just a curiosity of your suggestion Houston... I have done that, but when the amateur draft came around, it seemed as though the order was completely random. My 2 expansion teams picked first, but after that, it made no sense.

It's not based on last season's standing before nor after playoffs. It's not based on current standings either.

I hadn't posted here ;)

The expansions might be throwing it off..but it should be based on last year's standings.

So used to you having all the answers Houston, I guess I just figured it was you :P

I figure the expansion is throwing it off, but I'm wondering if Clay knows about it.

If I'm being confused w/ Houston, I must be doing a good job. :p

Rovy, can you post:
1. Standings.txt (from League>Options...>Automatic Text Output or the Baseball Mogul 2008\Output folder), and
2. a screenshot of the first round of the draft?

What version are you using?

I believe I was using 10.28A for the draft. I can't be 100% sure. I don't have the standings from the point in time of the draft. If it's super important, I can go back and figure out everyone's record, and then upload a screenshot.

I just wonder if this is a bug similar to what happens to the expansion teams when you add them, getting the other teams' news.

Still occurs in 11.04

Note that jonnymo is exactly correct above though. This only happens if you create team(s) on opening day. If you sim through the first season and add a team just after the world series is complete (which is what happens for historic expansion teams) then everything works correctly.

This still occurs in 11.10.

I should add that not only does the new custom team not get any draft picks the first year - there are still 31 picks each round. For some reason Arizona gets all the extra picks in addition to their own!

I also tried this with two new custom teams. Arizona again got all picks from all new teams, in addition to their own, finishing the draft with 18 picks.

So, wait - there's no way that I can start an expansion team in 2008 in BBM 2009? I have to either sim through and start in 2009, or load 2007's rosters and sim them through until 2008?

No... just choose 2007 as your starting season, sim through it, and then add your team after the World Series. Then you're all set for 2008.

Well, you can add a team at the beginning of a season, but it does create certain problems. This should be fixed though, as it's definitely a bug.

I just noticed this in my expansion team dynasty. When you add teams to the league it doesn't give those teams draft picks in their first season, but it still adds the picks to the draft, at the very bottom, and gives them to the first alphabetical team, in my case the Diamondbacks, for every round, which is ridiculous. Why can't those picks simply be given to the teams that were expanded, even if they are at the bottom of the draft, or add them somewhere in the top 10 alphabetically. Even just for one season its bad, that gives the Diamondbacks three first round picks, and 6 in the first 64.
