do you think he will ever get into the hall of fame or is he just not deserving?

Career .296/.384/.436 hitter over 17 seasons, 2182 hits, 162 HR, 1071 RBI, 1 MVP, 11 Gold Gloves, 5-time All Star, two-time World Champion (.245/.349/.340 in World Series).

Similar players: Wally Joyner, Mark Grace, Hal McRae

I think he falls short.

Agreed. Gold gloves are great but over all just not enough to qualify as HOF in my book.

Very Very good player.

Not hall of fame material though.

Not quite there.

I agree that he was a really really good player, but he wasn't great. If his batting average was over .300 for his career I would say that he might get in, but .296 just doesn't cut it.

Not good enought for the hall.

His best argument for the Hall is his 11 Gold Gloves, but that's not nearly as impressive argument for a first baseman as it would be for a shortstop, second baseman, or a catcher, or even a center fielder. As a hitter, he had some good years, but never had the power you look for in a first baseman.

Not really even close to a HoFer in my opinion.

Yeah definitely not enough power numbers for a first baseman HOFer. If he makes it in, then I'd be shocked.

Nope.....but here's another question....Tony Fernandez HOFer or not? He's got almost identical numbers to Ozzie Smith...but only 3 or 4 Gold Gloves. Tony lost out to Cal Ripken's overrated, minimal-range defence for many years....and he was the all-time hits leader for Dominicans (I think) until Julio Franco came back and has since passed him.....Tony was a great SS in the mold of the old-school SS...not much power but great D and good speed and average.....

I don't think Fernandez will get in. He's the type of player that might or might not have been put in by the Veteran's Committee in years past, but the way the Committee is structured now, I don't see it happening.

I think Fernandez was highly underrated, but I doubt we will ever see him in the hall. He did get 4 votes this year!

Who?

(j/k of course, but that is kind of my point...)

Alan Trammell was a better hitter than both Ozzie Smith and Tony Fernandez, yet he won't make the HoF either.

It's actually kind of funny, the '84 Tigers were one of the most dominating teams in MLB history, yet they don't have even one single HoF player. It's a crime Jack Morris isn't in. He was, afterall, the winningiest pitcher in the '80s and also tacked on another 20-win season and two World Series rings later in his career.

I was wondering what you guys thought about Bert Blyleven (http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/blylebe01.shtml)...should he be in, or not????

Yes.

Why do you think he keeps getting looked over?

Ive always thought so but in the last couple of seasons I began to doubt myself based on the fact that I'm a "homer".

Yeah I think Bert will make it.
Jack Morris should too.

How bout Biggio who is about to get his 3,000th hit?

ohms_law

He's been "overlooked" due to a natural bias by voters to only want to vote people in who have met certain specific milestones. That's been changing recently though.

All I know about Keith Hernandez is he and Roger McDowell spit on Kramer....and he's a Met, so he sucks!

I don't think Biggio will be in the hall. I think Bert and Jack will ultimately find their ways in.

3,000 hit is an automatic ticket to the Hall.

It should be, but with 30 MLB teams there are too many eligible players. It could take a while. Don't get me wrong: I like Biggio.

That didn't make any sense. Every player that is eligible for the HOF that has 3,000 hits has made it to the HOF. Raffy might be the first one never elected.

I just meant that what once seemed like a milestone doesn't get you in on the first ballot anymore.

Fernandez was solid... I think a lot of it has to do with how successful the team they play for is. Not necessarily to get them in, but just to get them some recognition in the public's eye.
