It all started in 1993 when the town of Denver, Colorado was awarded a MLB Franchise

EXTRA! EXTRA!
Denver- The MLB Commisioner just oked a bid for Denver to be host to a new MLB Franchise, The Colorado Rockies. The Rockies will be put in the National League along with the other Expansion Franchise Florida Marlins.

The Rockies are looking for a new General Manager and have a Short List of 3 guys/girls

1. Carl Jones- Carl is a a 45 year old male. He has a ton of money but the downside is that he is not willing to spend it. He can improve a team with his spending and his tight-fistedness makes players work hard for their dollars.

2. Joan Smith- Joan is a 40 year old female. She is not the richest of GM's that are available but she is very knowledgeable and knows what moves to make. Her Rah Rah attitude jumps starts a team and makes them want to go out their and win.

3. Travis Ritchie- Travis is a 20 year old male. He is very smart when it comes to baseball. He is willing to spend money (sometimes too much). He will give prospects the chance to bloom and vets the chance to show that they still have it. The onlydownside is that he is VERY young.

The Rockies are about to start their press conference. Let's go live:

Dan O'Dowd: "We are very priveleged to be able to support a baseball team in the fine city of Denver, Colorado. Also we are very lucky that such a fine town would be willing to step up and say "Yes we will take on a baseball team." I will now introduce the new GM of the Expansion Colorado Rockies.

The new GM is Travis Ritchie"

Travis Ritchie: "Thank you very much. When I heard that their was an opening to be a ML GM I was very excited. Especially when I found out it was for the city of Denver. I have always been close to the town of Denver being born here. Also I have always wanted to be a GM but all the other teams I applied for turned me down because I was too young. I want to thank Mr. O'Dowd for giving me this opportunity to GM such a wonderful club."

Their you have Travis Ritchie is the new GM of the Rockies.

Hope to bring you home the coverage of the World Series,
Tracy Ringolsby and the Rocky Mountain News bids you fairwell

Pittsburgh Pirates (0-0) @ Colorado Rockies (0-0)

Game 1
Zane Smith (0-0) @ Andy Ashby (0-0)
Ashby got rocked for 7 Runs (4 Earned) in 2 innings, but after that he settled down striking out the side in the 3rd inning. In the bottom half of the 3rd inning the Rockies scored their first runs with a Roberto Mejia walk, Ashby Sac Bunt, Alex Cole double, and EY single, leading to 2 runs but a 7-2 Pirates lead. No one scored until the 6th when the Prates struck for 5 runs thanks, mostly, to Back-to-Back Homeruns by Andy Van Slyke (2-run) and Orlando Merced (Solo). Then a 2-run HR by Dave Clark finished the inning. In the 7th the Pirates picked up where they left off, for 4 runs, with a bases loaded Triple by Jay Bell and a Mike LaValliere single. In the bottom of the 8th the Rockies hit their first Homerun, a solo shot by Larry Walker to Right leading off the inning.

Player of the Game:
Andy Van Slyke: 3-4, HR (1), 4 RBI (4)

ROCKIES LOSE: 16-3 :O
WP: Z. Smith (1-0)
LP: A. Ashby (0-1)

Game 2
Randy Tomlin (0-0) @ Butch Henry (0-0)
Pittsburgh opened with 1 in the 1st and 2nd by playing some small ball. In the Bottom of the 2nd an error by LF Lonnie Smith and a Single by Vinny Castilla led to a Sacrifice fly by Joe Girardi that scored Todd Helton to cut the lead to 2-1, but that was all the damage that they could inflict. Carlos Garcia led of the Pitssburgh 3rd with a solo shot to RF. Then Jeff King hit a 2-run HR to LF. Lloyd McClendon also got into the act with a 2-run blast to Dead Center. Walker doubled in a run, so after 3 innings it is 7-3 Pittsburgh. Joe Girardi, after a Bichette single, blasted a 414 foot shot to LCF for a 2-run HR and a 7-4 Pittsburgh lead. The next inning Vinny Castilla drew a bases Loaded walk. Joe Girardi and Roberto Mejia both singled tying the game at 7 all, but Scott Aldred (P) Struck out and Alex Cole (CF) Grounded out to end the inning. However the Pirates got the lead back after a Carlos Garcia Sca Fly and an Andy Van Slyke Homerun (solo). The fans were just getting settled back into their seats after the 7th inning stretch when Todd Helton singled to lead off (his first hit of the season) and then Vinny followed with a 406 foot HR to LCF to tie the game at 9 apiece. THE ROCKIES GET THEIR FIRST LEAD!!!!! Dante Bichette hits a 2-run HR to RF in the bottom half of the 8th to give the Rockies their first lead of the season at 11-9. ROCKIES WIN!!!!!!!! Darren Holmes gets to Strikeouts in the 9th and a grounder to end it. Rockies with their first win of, hopefully, many more.

Player of the Game:
Dante Bichette: 2-5, HR (1), 2 RBI (2). Hit the Go-Ahead HR in the 8th inning

ROCKIES WIN: 11-9
WP: B. Ruffin (1-0)
LP: B. Shouse (0-1)
SV: D. Holmes (1)

Game 3
Tim Wakefield (0-0) @ David Neid (0-0)
The Rockies starte dthe scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning after a Castilla HBP and Mejia double, which left runners at 2nd and 3rd, David Nied laid down a beautiful Suicide Squeeze which scored Castilla and advanced Majia to 3rd base. The next inning for the Rockies started off bad with a singles but a DP. However with 2 outs Larry Walker singled and Todd Helton, who is starting to break out of his hitting slump, blasted a 2-run HR to RF. Pittsburgh threatend with the bases loaded in the top of the 4th inning for Orlando Merced, but he struck out. Jeff King followed a Jay Bell single with a 448 foot moonshot to LCF for a 2-run HR. The Rockies scored 3 more in the 8th thanks to 4 straight singles and a sacrifice fly. Following the Sac Fly by Helton Vinny Castilla blasted a 2-run bomb to dead center for a 8-2 Rockies lead. Scratch that 10-2 Rockies, a Mejia single, Murphy double and a Cole single plated 2 more runs for a 7 run 8th inning. Andy Van Slyke hit a 2-run HR in the 9th cutting the lead to 10-4. Jay Bell's solo shot with 2 outs made it 10-5 (Hope the bullpen doesn't blow it). They didn't. Rockies win 10-5 and makes it 2 straight and a series victory.

Players of the Game:
Todd Helton: 1-2, HR (1), 3 RBI.
Vinny Castilla: 1-3, HR (2), 2 RBI.

Colorado Rockies (2-1) @ Saint Louis Cardinals (1-2)

Game 1
Bryn Smith (0-0) @ Omar Olivares (0-0)
An Error by Mejia, a bases loaded walk, and a single led to a 3-0 St. Louis lead. GM Note I am currently looking for a SS to replace Mejia. The next inning same thing bases loaded and we gave up more 4 runs. Mejia made up for it singling then scoring from 2B on an Eric Young single. A Castilla double and back-to-back singles gives the Rockies another run and a 7-2 deficit. However more Cardinals runs with 3 more bases loaded singles, and a 11-2 lead. Wow My Starter doesn't even go 5 innings and my Pitching is in a mess after the trade. So it's 13-2 Cards after 5. 14-2 after a single by Gregg Jeffries. GM Note Bryn Smith will be demoted after this game for David Neid, I brought him up so I could have a rested Pitcher start. The rest of the rotation will not change. That's it Mejia is gone made ANOTHER error. 4 errors in 4 games :O 17-2 after a 2-run throwing error by Mejia and a bases loaded walk by Bruce Ruffin. 3 more runs in the 7th makes it a shellacking 20-2, that's what happens when you need someone to make an emergancy start. 20-3 after a single, sac bunt, and a double by Alex Cole. After an EY ground out a 2-run HR by Bichette makes it 20-5, but that was all she wrote.

Player of the Game:
Mark Whiten: 4-5, 2 2B, 5 RBI

ROCKIES LOSE: 20-5
WP: O. Olivares (1-0)
LP: B. Smith (0-1)

Game 2
Scott Aldred (0-0) @ Donovan Osborne (0-0)
Hey, We're starting to get some lucky breaks. Castilla reached on an error and then Walker drove both of them in with a 2-run shot to LF for a 2-0 Rox lead. It stayed that way until the 4th when a single up the middle by Tom Pagnozzi that snaked under Sanchez's glove tied it at 2-2. A double and Triple by the Cards in the 5th made it 3-2 with a man on 3rd. He scored 4-2, single by Bernard Gilkey. In the 6th Scott Service walked in a run to make it 5-2. A questionable sac fly call made it 6-2 Cards going into the 7th. A Tom Pagnozzi 2-run blast in the 7th makes it 8-2 Cards. Man if we had a team of Walkers we'd be winning. Walker hits a solo shot to left, his second of the game, makes it 8-3 Cards. That's the ballgame.

Player of the Game:
Tom Pagnozzi: 2-3, HR (2) , 2 RBI

ROCKIES LOSE: 8-3
WP: D. Osborne (1-0)
LP: S. Aldred (0-1)

Game 3
Andy Ashby (0-1) @ Allen Watson (0-0)
Top of the 1st Alex Cole singled then, with 1 out, Castilla doubled to RF to score Cole, 1-0 Rox. With 2 outs Bichette singles to center, scoring Castilla. It stayed that way until the bottom of the 4th when Mark Whiten hit a solo HR to make it 2-1. Eric Young made it a 2-run ballgame again with a solo HR leading of the 6th inning. Bottom of the 8th we go to the bullpen and with 1 out Steve Reed gives up a 2-run HR to...MARK WHITEN. Games all tied up at 3. 2 outs, Top of the 9th, runners on 1st and 2nd, Rey Sanchez up, Singles to RF, Walker scores, Rockies are winning 4-3. To add some insurance PH Dale Murphy cranks a 3-run HR into the LCF bleachers making it 7-3 Rockies. That's all folks. The Rockies avoided a sweep with a 7-3 win over the Cardinals.

Player of the Game:
Andy Ashby: 7IP, 10H, 2R, 2 ER, 4 K.

ROCKIES WIN: 7-3
WP: S. Reed (1-0)
LP: R. Murphy (0-1)

Colorado Rockies (3-3) @ Florida Marlins (2-4)

Game 1
Butch Henry (0-0) @ Charlie Hough (0-0)
A lead off Alex Cole triple and a Vinny Castilla RBI Groundout made it an early 1-0 Rockies’ lead. It stayed 1-0 until the top half of the 5th inning when Rey Sanchez doubled and then scored on an Eric Young double after a beautiful sacrifice bunt by Pitcher Butch Henry. The 2-0 lead held up until we added some insurance in the 8th when, after back-to-back singles by EY and Castilla, Walker unleashed a 3-run blast to give us a 5-0 lead. A bases loaded walk allowed the Rockies to extend their lead to 6-0, but Castilla ended the threat by grounding into an inning-ending double play . A single-double-single cut the lead to 6-2 with 2 outs in the 9th. However Ruffin worked out of it by getting the next man to pop out to end the game.

Player of the Game:
Butch Henry: 6 IP 2 H, 2 BB, 0 R, 5 K.

ROCKIES WIN: 6-2
WP: B. Henry (1-0)
LP: C. Hough (0-1)

Game 2
Bobby Witt (0-0) @ Tony Saunders (0-0)
A Larry Walker sac fly with 1 out in the 1st opened the scoring for the Rockies. However in the bottom of the 2nd 2 walks and a single lead the Marlins to their first run and tied it at 1 all. With the bases loaded Bobby Witt walks in a run making it 2-1 Marlins. He is having control problems with 7 walks in 4 IP. The Rockies tied it in the 6th with a solo HR by Dante Bichette(3). However Scott Service, in the 7th, served up a solo HR to Benito Santiago to make it 3-2 Marlins. Greg Briley extended the lead to 4-2 with a Solo HR to LF.

Player of the Game:
Tom Saunders: 8 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 4 K.

ROCKIES LOSE: 4-2
WP: T. Saunders (1-0)
LP: S. Service (0-1)
SV: B. Harvey (2)

Game 3
David Nied (1-0) @ Ryan Bowen (0-1)
Alex Cole doubled to lead off the game and after a Sac Bunt by EY and a Sac Fly by Castilla its 1-0 Rockies. A double by Rey Sanchez, a sac bunt, and an infield single led to another Rockies run. The double was a single that was stretched so you can see we’re playing a little small ball. Well there goes the lead and the No-No It was broken up in the 4th by a 2-run HR by Baseball Tonight’s own Orestes Destrade. In the 7th the Rockies struck back with a solo HR by Vinny Castilla(3) that makes it 3-2 Rockies. Larry Walker walked then on a Helton double scored from first when the third base coach risked an out and sent him home on Junior Felix. After a Bichette double Joe Girardi, batting .171, singled to RF scoring Bichette making it 5-2 Rockies. A PH single by Dale Murphy gave the Rockies an insurance run making it 6-2.

Player of the Game:
David Nied, Bruce Ruffin, Darren Holmes: 9 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 9 K.

ROCKIES WIN: 6-2

Pittsburgh Pirates (3-6) @ Colorado Rockies (5-4)

Game 1
Bob Walk (0-0) @ Bryn Smith (0-1)
The Rockies struck first when, after a Cole walk and an error by Jay Bell, Larry walker singled through the left side for 2 RBI. Then Dante Bichette hit his 4th HR of the year giving the Rockies a 4-0 lead. A walk, single, double combo led to another run and a 5-0 Rockies lead. It might’ve been 2 runs had Walker not been cut down trying to stretch a single into a double. Another PH HR by Dale Murphy makes it a 6-0 ballgame. A sacrifice fly in the 8th inning gave the Pirates their first run of the game. That was how it ended, a 6-1 Rockies win!

Player of the Game:
Larry Walker: 2-3, 2 RBI.

ROCKIES WIN: 6-1
WP: B. Smith (1-1)
LP: B. Walk (0-1)

Game 2
Zane Smith (1-1) @ Andy Ashby (0-1)
A walk then a stolen base followed by a Todd Helton error led to an unearned Pirates run. A single and a 2-run HR in the second inning made it 3-0 Pirates. An Andy Van Slyke HR in the 3rd made it 4-0. Carlos Garcia hit a 3-run shot to RF making it 7-0 Pirates. However, Helton shortened the lead by hitting a 3-run HR in the 4th inning making it 7-3. Alex Cole tripled then Roberto Mejia brought him home with a single making it 7-4. In the 8th, after a single sandwiched by 2 walks, the Rockies made it a 7-7 game when Joe Girardi hit a 3-RBI Triple. Bases Loaded bottom of the 10th inning, 1 out, Bichette steps in. Here’s the pitch; Bichette hits it up the middle, ROCKIES WIN!, ROCKIES WIN!, ROCKIES WIN!. They come back from a 7-0 deficit to win it 8-7 in 10 innings and COMPLETE THE SWEEP!!!!!!

Game 1
Butch Henry (1-0) @ Randy Tomlin (0-1)
A Jeff King single and a Lloyd McClendon double made it 1-0 Pirates. An Al Martin double and an Andy Van Slyke single made it 2-0 Pittsburgh. In the 8th inning Vinny Castilla cut the lead in half with a solo HR to LCF (His 4th).

Game 2
Bobby Witt (0-0) @ Tim Wakefield (0-1)
A Larry Walker 2 out HR in the first inning gave the Rockies a 1-run lead. 2 singles and a walk lead to bases loaded then their PITCHER hits a groundball single making it 2-1 Pirates. Then another single made it 3-1. A Helton single and a Sanchez double cut the lead to 1 by a score of 3-2 in the Top half of the 4th. Walks come back to haunt you. A walk, double and single lead to a 5-3 Pirates with no one out in the 4th. Me being over aggressive on the base paths hurt us again. Thinking he would throw a knuckler I had Alex Cole (89 speed) Steal second but was gunned down by Mike LaValliere (86 Arm) on a high fastball, which cost us at least 1 run (Probably 2-3 runs). However we did score after a walk and back-to-back singles by Bichette and Castilla. A walk a stolen base and another single extended the lead to 6-3. Castilla singled after a Cole walk and a Walker single, 6-4. The Rockies tied after Joe Girardi hit a bases loaded (Thanks to a Helton walk) single to left for 2 RBI, 6-6. Following that was Rey Sanchez with a run scoring single, 7-6 Rox. We get 2 more insurance runs in the 8th when Dante Bichette blasts his 5th HR of the season. What a comeback 6 runs in the 7th and 8th combined to win 9-6.

Player of the Game:
Dante Bichette: 3-5, HR (5), 2 RBI, R, BB.

ROCKIES WIN: 9-6
WP: M. Knudson (1-0)
LP: B. Shouse (0-2)
SV: D. Holmes (2)

Game 3
Bryn Smith (1-1) @ Denny Neagle (1-0)
An error by Left Fielder Lonnie Smith led to 2 unearned runs when Dante Bichette went deep for the 6th time this year and gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead. A Bichette double in the 6th followed by a Castilla single led to another Rockies run. Dante Bichette hit his second Homerun of the game with a solo shot to LCF off Neagle. Dang it I left Smith in to try for the CG and Jeff King hits a PH GS to tie the game with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. They won on a stupid “Sacrifice Bunt” to third in which he went to get the out at first not home (and he GOT the out at first)

Player of the Game:
Andy Van Slyke: 2-6, 2 R, 2 SB.

ROCKIES LOSE: 5-4 in 12 innings

Pretty Dr Spinner writes…

“THE COLORAOCCASIONAL” Magazine

April 16th 1993.

“Spinner's Spin - AN Ear to the (Rocky) Ground”

Yes, that’s me, Folks…the pretty Dr Spinner, late of the legendary Brooklyn Knights of yore

Hands up, all those who thought I was dead?....well, I may not be quite as pretty as back in the sixties- I am 39, after all – but I am alive, and well, and living in Aspen, where I attend all those fallen skiers with their broken legs and stuff.

When I’m not amputating bent bits; or removing ski-poles from solar-plexuses, I write a gossip column for this mag…as you may remember, I have a twin career in both medicine and public relations, so I’m well-versed in making up stuff as I go along.

May I take this opportunity to congratulate the Colorado Cookies upon their formation? (especially those ballplaying hunks with their formations all there, and well-arranged!)

Ever since the opening Press Conference, when that nice young Mr Travis got the nod (reminds me of old coach Rongar – he always nodded off at Press Conferences), I’ve been haunting the locker rooms; shower stalls; church pews; confessional booths, and boudoirs of the players, gathering innuendos; rumours; hints; tips; winks; and nods, so here’s the latest skinny about the Club and stuff.

I have it on good authority, that:-

On May 13th, the Club is going to hold a 7th inning –stretch contest for John Denver look-alikes …the winner –whether or not he can sing – will get to do the Canadian National Anthem “God Save the Queen”, when the team goes to Quebec to play a series against The Montreal Exposed.

That pitching prospect Bong-Him-Young of the Pohung Preteens, the Club’s affiliate in the Asian Little League, has an unusual pitch that he calls the sub-submarine... he delivers the baseball from between his legs…

That catcher Joe Girardi has requested his team-mates not to send him flowers on his birthday…he feels that the practice detracts from his macho image and that incoming opponents rushing to home plate, will not be afraid to run over him.

In a recent fan poll, Joe was also voted the best –mannered Colorado Rookie…he usually removes his catcher’s mask before he spits.

That actor/wrestler The Rock has agreed to become the Club’s mascot, and will expose his beefcake in clement weather i.e. F70 or more in Mile –High stadium.

My old friend from the Brooklyn era, Deadly Dewhurst, will apply for the position of pitching-coach to the Club, once he completes his latest jail term this month .

All those players who saw their paychecks shrink by signing on with the Rockers, will be glad to know, that D.D. is still arranging loans at reasonable rates, and that besides being able to bring a vast array of illegal pitches to the teaching mound, he looks forward to a long term business association with the Colorado Bookies.

More next time

Love and kisses

Thank you Pretty Dr Spinner for that enlightening story. Now for the series recap

April 16-18, 1993

Florida Marlins (5-10) @ Colorado Rockies (8-6)

Game 1
Pat Rapp (1-1) @ David Nied (1-0)
Steve Decker gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when he hit a solo HR right after Bret Barberie (65 Speed) was caught stealing second by Joe Girardi (86 Arm). Followed by a lead-off HR by Chuck Carr in the 3rd inning. A single, walk and a Steve Decker double scored 1 run and Greg Briley was thrown out at home by LF Dante Bichette. The bottom of the 3rd inning looked promising with a Walker walk and Bichette single but then Castilla grounded into a double play, so with 2 outs and a man at third Helton came up a ripped a HR into the LF Bleachers (His 3rd) to make it 3-2 Florida. What confuses me is with CS at +20% yet a guy with 51 speed steals second then scores on a Chuck Carr single.

Player of the Game:
Pat Rapp: 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 K.

ROCKIES LOSE: 4-2
WP: P. Rapp (2-1)
LP: D. Nied (1-1)
SV: B. Harvey (4)

Game 2
Tony Saunders (1-0) @ Andy Ashby (0-1)
After a minor shake up of the lineup it looks like it’s paying off. Rey Sanchez hit a lead-off single then with 2 outs Bichette hit his 8th HR of the year to LF, making it 2-0 Rockies. Following that Alex Cole singled then went for second and made it, making it a runner on second 2 outs when Castilla came through with a single to RF scoring Cole. First and Third 1 out Tony Saunders up (48 speed) and Corners in yet he bunts for a base hit AND the runner at third scored, WTF!!! A double sandwiched by a couple of singles for Florida tied the game up at 3 in the top of the 3rd. Ok I give up Tony Saunders (48 Speed), THEIR PITCHER, Just stole second even with an 86 arm and CS at +20%. Then he scored on a Walt Weiss single. Tying the game in the 4th inning with a bases loaded Sac Fly was Castilla. Then Helton came through making it 7-4 with a 3-run HR (His 4th) to LF. In the 5th Larry Walker joined in on the Parade making it ¾ of the new Blake Street Bombers to Homer. His homer was a 2-run shot to LF making it 9-4. Castilla is the only member of the BSB not to hit a Homerun yet today. Orestes Destrade hit his 4th HR this year to make it 9-6 Rockies, followed by a single and a Greg Briley triple to make it 9-7. A single sandwiched by 2 walks made it bases loaded then Cole hit a 2-run single up the middle for a 11-7 lead. Castilla followed with a single of his own, plating 1 run. Pinch Hitter Alex Arias led off the 8th inning with a solo HR to make it a deficit of 4, 12-8, for the Marlins. That was all the comeback the Marlins could muster, though.

Players of the Game:
Blake Street Bombers: 11-18, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 2 BB, 6 RS.

ROCKIES WIN: 12-8
WP: A. Ashby (1-1)
LP: T. Saunders (1-1)
SV: B. Ruffin (1)

Game 3
Charlie Hough (0-1) @ Butch Henry (1-1)
A Larry Walker 2-run HR in the 1st inning (his 7th) made it 2-0 Rockies. The Marlins made it 2-1 in the 3rd with a single, sac bunt, and a Walt Weiss single. A Bases Loaded single by Orestes Destrade tied the game at 2. A Jeff Conine single in the 5th made it 4-2. Bichette cut it to 4-3 with a double following a Rey Sanchez double. That was how it ended 4-3 Marlins.

Player of the Game:
Florida Bullpen: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4K, 0 BB.

ROCKIES LOSE: 4-3
WP: C. Hough (1-1)
LP: B. Henry (1-2)
SV: B. Harvey (5)

Carl Dale (MIL) will miss 4 weeks due to a Hand Stress Fracture.

Paul Wagner signed with CIN for 1-year $120,000
Brian Givens (MIL) was released

Game 1: Rockies win 7-3
Game 2: Rockies win 4-3 in 12 innings
Game 3: Rockies lose 10-9 in 13 innings

We have an off day tomorrow then 2 more versus the Cardinals so hopefully no more crashes
