View Full Version : Bug in free agent demands? Rediculous!

With the new changes of the salary cap instituted (which I will reserve judgement on for the moment until we see how it works in a season or two) you may want to take a look at the free agent demands of some players.
For example in FastSim 6 Roosevelt Brown is asking for a ludicrous amount:
RooseveltBrown Free Agent
Center Fielder
Contact A+ Arm B- 31 years old
Power A- Range A+ Tenth season
Speed B+ Fielding B- Seeking 225 points
Eye B+ Health B through 2013
Roosevelt is perhaps the best center fielder in the game today.
He better be for that amount. My point is that with the new salary restraints, there is not a team out there that would be able to sign him even if they wanted to.
There are plenty of other examples out there too. Probably 8-12 players asking over 100 per year with several over 130.
Hope that the salary thing works, guys!

I had to release Brown from the Braves after the economy in all of the large markets CRASHED overnight. He was asking around 135-140 points at the end of last season, but I couldn't afford it. I guess $45 Million per year is the going rate for the latest .400+ hitter with 40+ home runs.

During the off season, salary demands start very high and drop to almost zero. The player signs with a team when the best offer matches his demand (as shown by the status gauge).
So I bet you'll be able to get Brown for 100-150 (after hitting .405 and scoring 199 runs, I'd ask for a lot too).

Call me suspicious if you must, but I suspect that, since Clay has a hand in actually running the server, he can step in and view any team in any league at any time. Otherwise, it would be kind of hard to check up on problems in various leagues. And I know if I was running something like this I cerainly wouldn't lock myself out.

The cap is a little too stingy. I am the Cleveland Indians with a payroll of 509 I got rid of Chavez who was asking for 150 points last yr to cut salary. But my budget is 391??? I am going to turn a huge profit and I already have the most points in the league. I can see a budget of 650 but not 390 when im a large market team.
In a few of my leagues, I have dozens of free agents driving in 100+ runs and hitting .300 that are not claimed because of the new financial restraints. On another note, there is way too much talent. I just cannot bear to see 23 year olds with an A rating because the GM spends 100+ points on scouting. Most of the teams don't need those 31-year-old ballplayers because they have a 25 or even 24 year old driving in 120 himself. And they're still paying him just one point.

In the off-season, these guys should lower the demands. And I'm working on code to lower their demands DURING the season. I think we'll have to go through a season or two before getting the AI worked out.

Is anything being down about the players crazy high offencive production? 80 HR's 230 RBI or pitchers going on 45 game winning streaks?

I have tweaked the minor league system in both the CD-ROM and online game to shift the talent back towards the pitching side.
If you have Baseball Mogul 2002, you can test this by downloading the most recent patch, playing a bunch of seasons, and reporting to me your reactions on the offensive balance in the game.
In Baseball Mogul Online however, we will have to wait a few seasons to see if this fix brings things back in line.

Clay,
Bravo on seeing (or hearing) the need to scale back the hitting. It looks as if it is working so far. There is only one team (maybe two) in the AL in FastSim6 with a team avg. over .300. At this time last year I think there were 7-8. I hope that this works. It will definately make the game more realistic.
Thanks for hearing what we were saying. Again I will complement you on a great game. I think that this is the reason why.
I'd expect more than one person in the league (Derek Jeter only, in my league) with 200 season hits. Well, keep tweaking the engine. Practice makes perfect.

Last year in the real thing, only 6 players got 200 hits, and 3 of those just barely did... so I wouldn't say that your one league's results indicate anything wrong in the system so far...
Well, considering the high-offensive game baseball has turned into nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if twelve people have 200 hits in a few years. Oh, and remember, this boost is happening after the strike zone got bigger and hitters have to swing at more pitches that they don't like.
In FastSim 24 Preston Wilson wanted 189 points a year. After the Free Agent period was almost over (nobody signed him to that ludicrous demand) I found him at 27 points a year for 9 years with 3 minutes left befors the last offseason sim. I grabbed him! My advice: wait until the offseason is almost over and then check the board and grab somebody cheap.

If you are really really commited you could easily field a competitive team and need not worry about outrageous contract demands. It just means taking the time to look for the cheap available talent. I signed a Steve Shephard for 1 point and he's gone 41-7 for me. He had a A+ control, B power and C+ movement.
Did you say a nine year contract?

There was a bug allowing 9-year contracts.
This has now been fixed - the maximum (from now on) is 7 years. Some more info on signing players can be found at http://www-1.sportsmogul.com/bb/Help/Free_Agents.htm.
