A new method for circumventing the free agent system.

sign a young stud to a 1 year contract, than sit him in the minors for half a season. than restructure his contract to a long term deal.

I've seen this done a couple of times, and wanted to get other owners opinion on this technique. Is this cheating or not?

While it might be on the edge of cheating, I don't think it is. What I would ( before the new system for free agents) is sign a player to this huge 1 year deal, what ever it would take to get him on my team. Then wait a few "weeks" an then sign him to a normal contact. Most times this would save me points over what he was asking for in the first place. ( I have yet to test this with the new system) It did not always work, sometimes they got more then what they where asking for while a free agent. I still don't see what I did as cheating , but will be the first to say that it is right there on the edge of sportsmanship an fair play..........
