It's a sad day for gamers and fantasy geeks all over the world.

Ahh, two years of my high school life were devoted to that man's creation. Fun stuff - it really helped me develop my imagination, story and writing skills...even my project management and organizational skills I use at work today. Some of the guys I used to run a game for still have their characters framed - or even go by their character's names on AIM or email addresses. We actually got a guy from the football team into our group - a total fantasy nerd in hiding. He's the one with the framed character sheet. :)
Alas, once in 11th grade I left my D+D days behind; sorry boys, there are girls out there waiting to be touched.

You wanna know what's weird? The last two girls I've been interested wound up having D&D connections. One had played with her brother for a couple sessions. The other has sit in on her brother's sessions. I've been striking gold meeting girls with nerd connections. :p

Anyone who's cool! :)
Seriously, I suspect that our dynasties section would either be much more barren, or look much differently if RPGs hadn't come on the scene. It takes a bit of a leap of imagination to pretend you're the GM and not just staring at your computer screen maximizing stats :)

Yea, agreed.

While D&D wasn't entirely 'original' in many of it's ideas (Gygax was a HUGE Lord of the Rings fan, and was trying to create an interactive version of the books), it is definitely responsible for the RPG market even existing today, in any medium. Probably had a lot to do with today's storytellers, and where they got their early experience with that.
I personally haven't played in years, but it's great fun.

agreed, whether you are pretending to be an elf or a GM you are basically doing the same thing, using your imagination to entertain yourself. In my book, aint nothing wrong with that:)

And, sadly, 'using your imagination' seems to almost be something outlawed when it comes to entertainment for kids these days, which depresses me.

I remember the good ole days when people use to blame this guy for kids doing violence. Sortof like what they say about games now

I played D&D when I was like 10 years old, after that is was too nerdy for me as I played a lot of sports.

D&D is never too nerdy.

Well, I've had some friends appraoch their 30's and still play...and then its not dice and monstrous manuals, its dressing up and speaking in old language and having girls you like dress up as 'messengers'. Then there's some code about what your actions mean, and how to have things take place...Vampires got into that with some of their books, and man, that gets too nerdy for me. Give me dice, a screen, and a few good friends back in my youth.
And this is a guy who is happy to stare at his computer for an entire weekend, work on code all day, and play with my investments to unwind. I think I'll fit nerd pretty well.

Yeah, that's too nerdy. That's not D&D. That's LARPing. And LARPing is too nerdy.

I never got calling something I am into nerdy or stupid, just because I do nt like it or it's not my cup of tea why does that mean it is not "nerdy"? Why bother to label a persons hobby one way or another (steps off saop box to go play more mogul)

Lol. I'll be the first one to tell you that I'm a huge nerd and that playing D&D is incredibly nerdy. But that's what makes it awesome.

he says that a lot in IL30, as most of you already know, Mikey is probably the best commissioner in BMO, along side of Jmarter, and Jokerswild.
