I think the rookie contracts should decrease with each passing pick that is made. Just like in actual NFL contract negotiations, a rookie's earning potential diminishes with each team that passes him up. If a player is a "future hall of famer", then they can negotiate at $4,000,000 per year when taken in the first round. But, they shouldn't be able to ask for the same $4M if they drop to the third round. This would give the owners more options to manage their payroll. If I'm up against the salary cap, and I need help at more than one position, the incentive could be to trade my first round pick away for other picks in later rounds. Especially if the guy I want could be available in the second or third round. By taking my player in the second round, instead of the first, I'd save money in my payroll and better manage the salary cap. Just a thought. I'm not sure how hard that would be to program. Maybe contracts could deteriorate at a rate of 1% with each passing pick, or something like that. I'll check the math on that to see if its realistic.
