View Full Version : Language Blocking System
metsguy234

I understand why certain words are blocked. It makes things easier to moderate and blocks offensive language.
Problem is, it seems like you guys allow many offensive words (the a-word for one) and don't allow many words, like helll and damm (you do allow "damned" though)
(Note:I intentionally misspelled the words that would be blocked normally)
Why is this???
Example of A-word being used:

The words that are blocked are the vBulletin forum software defaults, which are obviously not very well thought out...
Clay and Dee don't seem to mind bad language as long as it's not overdone or extreme, and personally neither do I. If it were up to me and I had some free time to do it I'd probably just turn the filters off completely, but it's not really worth the time to do anything about it.
*shrug*

I share the same views as ohms. The reason damned is allowed, and it's not without the ed, is because the censor only checks full words. For example, **** (that's the "s-word"). *****. :p
At the very least, I'd like to see he11, @ss, and d@mn uncensored. Those words aren't really considered "foul language" anymore.
RickD
03-23-2008, 03:43 PM
Well I consider them foul!
HoustonGM
03-23-2008, 04:44 PM
I meant as in, they aren't censored on things like TV and they're allowed to be said in low-rated movies, etc.
metsguy234
03-23-2008, 06:23 PM
helll and dammn should certainly be allowed in these forums!
Few people actually consider them swears anymore, and the people that consider them swears consider them very mild ones.

Of course we could try to keep the language civilized....**shrug**....sigh....just a thought
ohms_law
03-24-2008, 02:19 PM
Obviously. Still, blatant censorship just isn't right. Just letting people say whatever they what whenever they want isn't right either, but automatic filter systems like vBulletin uses always end up going way overboard.
RickD
03-24-2008, 02:56 PM
Yeah it can go overboard. I've had non-swear words **** out before. I see the point there. I guess my rule of thumb is if my parents would have washed my mouth out for saying it I shouldn't say it still!

As I said in another post:
PS why cant I say **** anymore? Im Catholic. They told me if I masterbated, I would go to ****. If I cheated, I would go to ****. If I screwed a pony in the rump end, I would go to ****. If I rise up against the crackers, poke hot rods through their eyes, stab them, beat them, and put them on a cross up-side-down, I still cant say ****.
So basically, it is not the act, just where you are going.
So lets see,
****, ****, *******, ****, vagina, boobs, breasts, knockers, whores just to test a few. I bet they dont ban nuts, screwhole, or pecker holster.
I prefer dirty sanchez, rusty trombone, donkey punch, and the latest, the Spitzer Swallow.

Can someone please do this?
AT LEAST remove crapp. Censoring that is RIDICULOUS!
Isn't it easy to change censors? I started an InvisionFree forum once, and it was easy, is it difficult to change censored words with vBulletin?

But alot of the words it censors aren't even that bad or offensive, like crapp helll, and damnn. Besides, to my knowledge, it isn't that hard to decensor words, is it?
RickD

You could easily just had said I don't understand why we have to use foul language to get across the points I have to make to these guys. It's not that hard.
FYI: I am fine with it, because if I read something like this is just completely turns me off (with or without censors) and I agree with Rick D, we all should know words to use to convey our feelings correctly without resulting in fowl language. Atleast I think you guys should know enough words if I do (and I'm in High School :D ).

Rick D has a point...take me f'rinstance...I don't say owt to my parents, let alone swear-words!...I save them for a boys' night-out at the Bingo parlor. To that nicely brought-up girl next door, I say how much I like her refined ways...to the prostitute, downtown, I say "How much?"
When talking to an egghead, I use two-dollar words...when jousting with my peers, I speak in monosyllables...I present myself, to H.M. the Queen, as a gentleman, to the panhandler, as a heartless boor.
As George Washington claimed "It's all humbug!" - would the real Rongar please stand up?

RickD, you are so damned traditional
its common in this world to swear. why? i dont know, but everyone does it. not saying its ok, but there are people that use it to get their meaning across
Exhibit A: Larry Bowa
ahah in any case. people use words like that in dynasties to be politically correct. in my mind. i mean, honestly, there are two things at play here
1. In RickD's defense, why does it need to be uncensored? It's really easy to do things like
"F**k! I can't f*cking say sh*t around here. Cr*p is f*cking censored?!"
2. In all the people who are against censorship's defense, yeah, free speech is being attacked and I'm sure most of you have seen George Carlin's 7 word speech. If this board started off uncensored, I'm sure there are people who'd start this thread to get it censored
Honestly? I dont care. Asterisks are really easy to use in the middle of the word so everyone knows what you mean.
So chill. All of you.
And RickD? you don't need to repost the same thing repeatedly. I've seen you do it now in at least two (the best qb of all time and now this one) threads. no offense, just thought you should know it gets a lil annoying at times.
RickD
07-29-2008, 10:23 PM
I'm sorry if my reposting annoys you but I usually re-post when things are brought up in more than one thread.
I get my point across fine without swearing. It doesn't need to happen. However it's obvious I am a lone voice in this forum on the topic and Dee has loosened the language restrictions. Nothing I can do so really the discussion is moot. I have no need to re-post on the topic nor do I have to read the threads that digress into swear sessions. No biggie.

Just to let you know, RickD, that you are not alone in your distaste
for foul-mouthings, although my objections are aesthetic, rather than religious.
For let's face it, Guys, swearing is not a pretty sight...have you never admired a
pretty looking girl, or been interested by a guy who, seemingly, has it all together, then been a tad disappointed, when they drop a floater? (Ironically,
usually in an attempt to impress one!)

Rongar thanks for the back up.
One note...though I am "religious" and apparently have a rep for that on these threads my distaste is more because I find it crude not just for "religious" reasons. In the questioning of the language use I have not brought religion into it.
I agree with your ref. I have met some very nice women, interesting men and suddenly they start talking language that my Mom would have washed my mouth out for using and that kind of does it for me. I was not raised in a Christian home....did not become a believer until my teens but the rule as a kid was if I said certain words I would have my mouth washed out with soap.
I guess I haven't gotten beyond my raising. I still hold onto the lessons my folks taught me as a kid...respect those older than you. Say Yes ma'am and sir, please and thank you, open a door for ladies, don't swear, always have on clean underwear, etc.

It is pretty easy to use other words than swear words. Thou I do think that Crapp should be unsensored. Other swear words. Just use other words to fully describe how you feel or what you want to say. Get a dictionary..ect.

Personally, I don't see why anybody would be offended by a mere word. The intention behind the word could be offensive, but just shouting dam, hell, or crap into the air shouldn't be offensive to anybody.
As for the argument that we could just "stretch our vocabulary," well sure we could. But why should we? I could say, "that was a damn good sandwich." Or I could say "that was a very good sandwich." And what if I suddenly told you "very" was a dirty word? Then you'd have to stretch your vocabulary and find a new one, but it would be pointless.
