Is defense important for pitchers?

Would the only defense a plitcher does is if the ball is hit right at him? Or does defense for a pitcher cover the part when they run to first or homebase to cover in case of wild throws?

Defense covers anything a pitcher does to field the ball, whether it be covering first, fielding a ground ball, etc.
