View Full Version : Rookie Salaries

I think there needs to be a something written into the program that would have rookie contract values decrease with each passing draft choice. In the NFL, rookie salaries are "slotted". So the #1 pick makes more than the #2, the #2 more than the #3, etc. First round picks make more than second round picks, etc. In the current form, a "future hall of famer" during the first round will be asking for $4,000,000 a year. If he's still there in the second or third round, the negotiating starts at the same $4,000,000 a year. Why would I as an owner pay $4M a year for a third round pick? I think the salary should deteriorate by 1% after each subsequent selection. So if the player starts at $4M at the top of round 1, he would adjust to $2.89M at the start of round 2; $2.10M at round 3, etc.

This is an important element. As an owner, I have to manage a salary cap. If I think I can get the player I want later in the draft I should be rewarded for trading down by saving money on payroll. If I'm up against the salary cap, and I need help at more than one position, I have incentive to trade my first round pick for a couple of middle round picks so I can get more bang for my buck. If you are in position to take a stud Guard or Tackle in round three with 80+ run AND pass blocking IN THE THIRD ROUND, you shouldn't have to pay first round money for him.

What do you guys think?

I agree with you. It's all about where you fall in the draft and your position.

totally agree. this needs to be worked out. NFL also uses suggested signing bonus determined by when that player is drafted.

the eagles have just signed their 2 draft picks recently and articles on espn and local stated that the eagles went over the normal NFL signing bonus for players drafted in that slot to get the overall salary down.

mostly all draft picks require a signing a bonus. has anyone heard of a draft pick signing a contract with a team with no bonus at all?this should not be an option. when you go to draft someone in the first 3 rounds they should demand a certain salary and a certain signing bonus by default. then these numbers would go down if they are still available in later rounds.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm working on this and the next version (2.0.8.0) should have much more realistic contracts for rookies.

I know I am in the minority but some rookies sign expensive contracts even being drafted in the later rounds. Chris Winke comes to mind. I do like the idea of signing bonuses since the NFL contract is not guaranteed. Something where I first round pick expects at least 1 million in cash or his salary is 3 times as much.

I said "more realistic" and I created a patch with college draftees seeking contracts for 4 million years.

Oops!

I'm fixing this bug, and have also added code requiring signing bonuses on most contracts.

Clay,

The resigning of veterans was great and how most of them asked for a signing bonus and you couldn't go lower. I am sure once you fix the bug for draft picks it will be great. Thanks for listening to suggestions.

OK a question. If most players are going to ask for signing bonuses, and from what I see the computer teams lose money most of the seasons, how is that going to affect the computer teams? From what I theorize the computer teams are going to continually lose money and have no players at all, ie not worth a ****, in the future.

I always make money through shrewd wheeling and dealing and always have alot of 1st round draft picks per year through even more wheeling and dealing. But I would rather make money through sales of tickets and concessions than signing a player and trading him for cash or draft picks.

Thanks
Brian
