I noticed that when the game loads players from the Lahman database, it adds hit by pitches to pitchers year-by-year (and thus career stats) for seasons where the pitcher actually had 0 hit batsmen. This doesn't happen in every case of a 0 HBP season, but the majority it does. I've only noticed this while starting in 2008, but I haven't checked for historical seasons.

I'll have to double check this before I call it "not a bug", but I'm almost positive that the instances where this occurs are when Lahman does not contain data for a player. Hit by pitch, intentional walks, caught stealing, and a few other fields, it's relatively common for the data to be missing. They therefore shouldn't be 0's, since it's likely that the player received around the average number of those events, so Mogul makes a deacent guess and goes from there.

Well, Lahman does have the data for recent players, at least. It gets all the other years correct, but just adds them in the seasons where the pitcher actually had 0.

sorry, what?

...I'd double check Lahman, if you have a specific instance in mind. Even for reacent players, there are a couple of instances where stats are missing (or just bad) for one reason or another.

I meant like, if you look at the pitcher's career, every single year is correct EXCEPT the ones where he actually didn't hit any batters.

For example, Cubs reliever Michael Wuertz. In real life, he's hit one batter - in 2006. In the game, he has 1 HBP in 2006, and then 4 for 2007, 5 for 2005, and 2 in 2004, despite him actually having 0 all those years. In the Lahman Pitching file, he has a 0 for those years that he should.

By the way, starting another new game, his HBP values are the same as they were in the original game, so it doesn't appear to be random either.

ah... interesting. OK, I'll have to double check on this when I get home.

I just editted in an example above.
