So I'm trying out petrel's new Win Shares sheet, and he has me export my batting, pitching and fielding stats in Lahman's format, .csv. Great.

Batting works fine, but pitching and fielding save as .xls files. Since no one else has complained, I'm guessing that Excel autoconverts the .csv file over, and so no problem.

However, I'm using OpenOffice because I ...well, don't like MS anymore. :) OpenOffice, for some strange reason, converts .xls files to text. It likes .csv files just fine.

The workaround is to go into DOS command, and rename the file. (etc: 72junpitch.xls = 72junpitch.csv) Note that renaming the file in Windows doesn't work, as that doesn't manipulate the file extension.

Please change the file extension the output .csvs change to in these two cases.

Thanks!

I'm not seeing this. You're saying when you have the File Format set to .csv, it outputs as a .xls?

Correct. Here, take a look.

For the Lahmans entries, you only have one choice - to download as a .csv file.

However, on the right you see it saved all three (now!?) sheets as Excel files. If you look up to the '72junbat' entries you see what a .csv should look like on that page.

Ah, yes, I do see it now. I didn't notice it because Excel prompts you to convert the .xls file to .csv, as Petrel explained in his instructions.

Note that renaming the file in Windows doesn't work, as that doesn't manipulate the file extension.

Try updating your Windows settings. Open any Windows/Explorer window and under Tools, go to Folder Options. Under the View tab, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types."

That will now show you the extensions on everything and you can change them.
