View Full Version : June 2 Board Maintenance done...

Let me know if you see any problems! (Icons or sig images not loading, files not downloading correctly, inability to post where you should be able to post...)
BTW post count dropping does not count as a bug, unless it drops to 0 and you know you have posts. The boards are in a constant state of being pruned and cleaned up so post counts will be dropping as those posts are removed from the bloated, sickly, crashing database. The board is on Weight Watchers now.

Would it be possible to link to outside organizations to help those who are unable to cope in their daily lives due to severe post count losses? There are quite a few of them on the forums here.

In the event of one's posts being scrubbed for general viewing, can that one still read his own, eliminated, posts?

Nope..they disappear. The idea is to reduce the amount of data in the board database...if we just hid the posts from view, it wouldn't have as profound an effect. I don't even really know how we'd just hide 'em...
The posts that are going away today are in forums for leagues that no longer exist. All other posts are staying. So, if you have gems in the forums for leagues that have disbanded, today's the day to find 'em and save 'em. :)

I really doubt that you have anything to worry about, Rongar. Nothing from the "regular" forums is going to disappear.

I don't know if you know this, but when you delete a BMO users posts. What happens is that they are concidered less active. There reputation goes down. It went years without any such deletion.
If you are having problems with memory issues, then I suggest upgrading hardware. It is 2008.

A) Bull****, but whatever...
B) Posting real content helps.
C) The longer this goes on the more I wish that the BMO forums would be moved to their own separate board space. I think that's a great idea regardless, but this **** makes it that much more important.

It's not a simple matter of "just get better hardware" -- we have great hardware and I think it's maxxed out at this point in terms of RAM anyway.
But, that is a thought:
Now, if someone wants to send me oh, about $7000 or so for hardware and my time to set it up, and then pay a $50 monthly membership fee, I will HAPPILY, GLEEFULLY make a machine that JUST hosts a vBulletin so they can sit in a corner and post "poop poop poop" over and over in a thread to get their post count up.
I await the check. If it does not bounce, I will start Post Count Mogul.

By the way, in terms of BMO forums... You ought to think about phpBB. It's open source (and free for commercial use). Heck, you could make each league owner one of the administrators of their own forum that way.

Ohms: I totally agree. Splitting the board into 2 boards is something I think we should definitely attempt this summer...probably in July. I just have to do some hardware groundwork for that before it can happen.
Re: phpBB. My issue with phpBB is hackability. It was a while ago, and things have probably improved now, but when I was subscribed to Bugtraq, there was a post a week about major security issues with phpBB. And, splitting the board into two vBs is (theoretically) less complicated than splitting it into a vB and a phpBB.

Well, I've heard claims about phpBB3 security being better than vB's recently, but that's mostly marketing speak probably. You're probably right though that it would be a big headache supporting two separate software packages.

If your "reputation" is based upon how many posts you have online, then you deserve to have it reduced to zero.
Dee, can I pay you $5 to reset peoples' post counts? :D

Rick... I read about how certain people try to sell their kidneys on eBay since there are people out there in need of them that would purchase it. I bet if they approved something like post count transplants and you offered a certain number of your posts on eBay, boomboom would pay whatever price you offered for them.
