View Full Version : Useless Minor Leaguers

Hey! I'm new to the game. I downloaded BM09 on Sunday and have been quite obsessed with it. I think this may be the game that I've been looking for.

Anyway, I wanted to ask a question about what you do with minor league players that just aren't ever going to make it or guys who have already made it, but are now doing poorly in there old age in your farm system. Do you simply cut them outright or do you try to trade them for a prospect or even cash? After playing up to the amateur draft, I decided that it was time to evaluate my farm system. I ended up getting rid of useless players by basically selling them. I assume that the new team picks up the players contract and I get a little bit of money where if I were to simply release them, I would have to buy out the contract and get nothing out of it. Is this correct? Thanks in advance for the help.

Pretty much.

IF you can trade/sell them, then why not. Otherwise it depends:

If they're old, then you might as well cut them.

If they're very young, and therefore probably with a minor league contract, then leave 'em alone unless they're clogging up your minors system (too many people at one position limits playing time.) They might develop anyway.

I usually let my players develop, no matter how bad they are (unless they're blocking someone). Once they've peaked, I keep them for depth sometimes. If they're completely useless, I try to package a few together and get something halfway decent. Alot of the time I just do a 69/69 for a 50/70 or somthing like that since there's a chance he might become better than 70.

I don't really do anything with them usually, I'll just leave them there to rot unless I have an overflow of them and I need to get rid of some so I don't hamper other player's development.

Just leave 'em unless they are clogging up some playing time from valuable prospects

However, a bit of advice is to never give up on a prospect(note someone who isn't peaked yet), as sometimes they do tend to improve in the long run. Heck, there was even a sixth rounder I saw that developed into a 90+ pitcher

I get rid of the ones with really crappy health ratings and keep the rest.

one thing I noticed was that while switching from historical to fictional mid-game, the rookie level was so weak that no rookies were making teams anywhere until 23-25.

depends on what you mean by useless ...

Very young guys rated say 55/69 may not seem good but if they are only 18-19 there is a chance that they may bloom, once guys get older, think into the 23 range if they are still rated poorly say 62/69 i usually release them just because i like to be tidy.

Especially in historical sim i gernerally purge my minor relasing a bunch of guys i dont want.

One thing that you can do with "useless" players is pile them into a trade offer. Sometimes the computer can be suckered in by getting "a bunch of guys".

Also, if you have an expansion draft coming up in a year or two, keep everybody, no matter how awful they are. On occasion the computer selects those guys, for some bizarre reason.

Personally i try to avoid that it feels like cheating when i can offer 10 guys rated 60/70 for one that rate 80/90

Yeah, I suppose it's not "real life". Well, unless the opposing GM is Mike Lynn of the infamous Herschel Walker trade...

That's pretty much what I do. You never know when you'll need someone to fill in on the bench or in the bullpen for a couple weeks. They are also useful as throw-ins in larger trades (I usually throw them in to fill gaps in AI controlled teams being that they is D-U-M-B and end up using 17 year olds to fill spots if they don't have an appropriate older minor leaguer available).
