11.10 Memory leak leads to crash (***** <- Five stars!)

Several times now as I hit the play button to sim ahead a popup box informs me that BBM cannot sim because there is an open dialog box, and asks me if I want it to close the open dialog box and sim. Which I, of course, allow it to do.

The thing is...there is not a dialog box open.

I'll try to get the exact wording if it happens again.

Could be related...just now I was resigning players and I hit negotiate and nothing happened. I hit it again and it brought up the negotiation screen. I released the player and the negotiation dialog box disappeared leaving me with the main interface.

However, the game was frozen. The stuff at the bottom was scrolling but if I clicked on anything I heard the little bell. Windows task manager said the program was running, when I told it to end task, windows said the program was waiting for a response from me. Could there have been another mystery window open that I could not see?

Computer is the same as I have been using on BBM for over a year.

I was plugging along just fine tonight, when right after a hit in Manager mode, the game paused itself and I couldn't click on anything. In Task Manager, the BB2K9.exe process is slowly leaking memory to the tune of about 4 KB every couple seconds, just gradually growing, never dropping back down. CPU usage seems fine at around 1 or 2 percent.

I also couldn't right-click and bring up the typical context menu from the program's tab on the taskbar. The title is "Baseball Mogul - July 19, 2010 (Simulating PAUSED) (v11.10)". The task is said to be running normally in Task Manager, but it clearly is not. Even if I bring the game up to the front of the screen, I cannot give it focus. When I try to end the program through Task Manager, it says that it's awaiting a response from me. That makes me wonder if there's a dialog box open behind everything that I cannot see.

Checking things out further, if I try to tile the windows vertically or horizontally (yes, I'm trying everything here not to lose my progress), there is a "Setting Up Inning..." progress bar that fills fairly quickly, after which I still can't do anything.

Have you hit ESC? I get this a TON in the normal (non-game) screens. Hitting ESC seems to close the mystery window and get focus back to the main window.

This is the same Mystery Dialog box bug that I posted a few weeks ago. This never happened to me in BBM2008, only started in 2009. Happens every so often.

Help me! I've had Baseball Mogul 2009 for a couple of months now, and I've had this problem since the start. While playing, my computer totally locks up and freezes on the screen while playing. It only happens while playing BM09, had no problems with BM08 or BM07. This sometimes happens after only a short time playing, or sometimes it can happen after I've been playing for a while. It's really, really annoying and it results in me having to shut off my PC and restart it. ALT+CONTROL+DELETE doesn't work, nothing does. It's almost like my screen just totally freezes on the spot. I just don't know what to do, it has destroyed many fun games, although I try to save as often as possible.

I haven't tried to reinstall the game yet, but I'll do that when I get home in an hour or so.

Humm... this is the first I've heard about anything like this going on. With thousands of other users using 11.10 now, I'm more inclined to think that there's probably something wrong with your computer rather than with Mogul itself.

When this does happen, can you take a look at debug.txt in the main Mogul folder and tell us what the last few items in there are? Are there a bunch of error messages?

Not sure what the "ERROR: Memory Leak" means, that could be it.

I was playing my dynasty when I saved a game in mid-game. I saved once and when I went to exit out of the game it asked me to save again. I saved again and when I went to go resume the saved game the picture loaded, but without the batter and none of the PBP buttons or commands work. The only way that you can get it is to stop the game and start over.

When that lockup happens whatever happens in the game still is counted in that player's stats. In one instance Brett Carroll hit a HR in the first inning, I double saved (on accident) and then loaded the game back up today. When I restarted I noticed he had 2 HR (Even though he had only had 1 when I started the first game). I looked at his player card and sure enough that HR had been counted in the totals, but not on the game log (See Screenshot)

This is not a bug. The "last 10 games" counts the homer he hit in the spring training game March 18. It's the same with minor league stats.

Ok, Let me show you his batting stats and Game Log up to date.

As you can see with the previous game log, he did not hit a HR on April 1st meaning he hit only 2 HR all year and he has 3 on his batting stats.

I've had the same thing happen before. In a game for me Jason Pridie hit a pinch hit homerun in his only at bat and his first at bat of the season, and in his game log his OBP showed up correctly, at 1.000, but in the season stats tab it showed up at .667.

it's not just the home runs that don't match up

Season Summary shows he(scouting report says she) has played 14 games, has 35 at bats, 10 hits, 6 runs scored, 3 home runs, 11 runs batted in. The game log only shows 7 games(out of 11 appearances), 34 ab's, 9 hits, 5 runs scored, 2 home runs and 10 rbi's.

Twice in the past week, BBM would be running at a normal speed and then suddenly close while I am looking at a box score from the game.

It really sucks, because I lose games that I haven't saved...

Yeah, but it always screws up sending it. Something about not finding the URL to send it to...



Also ohms, several times (maybe 4 or 5) the game has completely frozen, with the screen unclickable, but the bottom ticker still running, and when I go to the Task Manager to close it, it says that the program is waiting for a response from me...

I was looking at his debug and then saw this "1214341061 ERROR: Duchscherer, Justin has illegal PREDICTED pitching stats. Baseball Mogul doesn't allow pitchers with an Opponent Batting Average below .100 as this is usually a sign of bad data. He has been corrected by setting his stats equal to the league average."

What is going on there?

That's unrelated to this. There's a reality check in the import function, which is what's generating that message. If you look, you'll see that same message in most debug.txt logs.

Hi, im having exactly the same problem, i'm playing with the demo version and would like to solve this problem before buying the game. It freeze during game and i have to restart my computer, in the log it says memory leak but baseball mogul 2009 is the only game my computer has a problem with. Thanks for your help.

When that lockup happens whatever happens in the game still is counted in that player's stats.
Since the stats problem is dependent on the main issue occurring, I've merged the other thread into this one.

In Tools -> Options, do you have Auto-Save selected? Backup Saved Game?

I have neither auto-save nor backup save checked. This was an 08 file that I changed to 09 after I bought 2009. Would that have any affect?

ugh... that's not cool. Is it putting anything in the debug.txt after it locks up? There's at least one memory leak issue that's been reported, which can seem like a random crash.

I think I figured it out

1). Open BBM 2008
2). Create a new game, sim a month, then save it
3). Load the game in BBM 2009
4). Play 1 gam ein PBP a little bit
5). Click Save
6). When it is done saving click Resume Game
7). It will ask you to save again, save again.
8). Open a DIFFERENT GAME
9). After the other game opens re-open the file you first started with

If you do that you shouldn't be able to do anything but go back to calendar and start over

Memory leaks are funny. They don't cause crashes immediately, and they don't actually cause crashes themselves. What ends up happening is that eventually some peice of memory gets overwritten that the system or program is (or should be) using, and either the program or Windows itself (or even possibly some othjer program) will crash. Memory leaks = bad.

oddly, the BBM logo on the taskbar has gone COMPLETELY black, its kinda creepy...

Anyway, while all of these descriptions of the problems are different, the underlying cause is all the same. I'm merging and renaming the threads into one large thread. The thread will be somewhat confusing looking this way, but the basic point that there's a (large!) memory leak causing problems isall that really matters regardless.

I've had the same thing happen to me. I didn't keep the crash files or anything. I just kind of let it go, but it's happened about three times since I bought it. Next time it happens, I can supply more information on it for the mods as well.

That's the main problem with using the Rate Thread system for bug reports, because it shows the average of all votes. Someone (and that's the second problem, there's no way to tell who or to edit the rating) voted 1-2 stars at some point, so the average is pulled way down. So, I put that "***** <- Five stars!" in the thread title because really, I don't think there is a more important issue that needs to be addressed right now.

According to YEAH DAAAAWG's debug report, this is still occurring in 11.18 at least. If any sees it in 11.19 it would be good to say so.
