Guys... can we please get the signatures under control? I just went in and turned everyones off, simply because right now there are several people's sigs that are longer than 90% of their posts!

Please?

Finally.

Ohms there is actually a setting in vbullentin that you can choose not to see other people signitures.

I would leave it up to the user to decide if they want to see them or not. I do know for a fact vbullentin has this feature but not sure if this feature is activated on this forum On Pinstack it is :)

Yea:

I just went in and turned everyones off

I'd really rather not have to leave it that way. Dee could turn them off globally too, you know...

It's a problem. That's my only point.

HoustonGM
06-26-2008, 03:57 AM
Agreed. I'd like to see Dee turn on length limits and turn off say like the size tags.

I absolutely agree that it is annoying but,

I don't think censorship is ever the answer. What's next? Burning books?

HoustonGM
06-26-2008, 09:01 AM
Restricting the size of signatures in order to make the forum easier to read is barely censorship.

ohms_law
06-26-2008, 09:19 AM
heh
You're talking to one of the largest libertarians on this forum.
:)

I agree with HoustonGM. The content is not the problem at all, so this isn't about censorship.

Well...my only thoughts are that the last time Ohm's messed with the internet he broke it.....:p

It's freedom of expression.

Back in Albuquerque there was a big hooplah over graffitti. Everyone thought that the graffitti was bad, marking up the city. It was, of course, made illegal.

Then there was a another hooplah about wooden crosses and flowers being put around town by families to remember their loved ones who had died in car-related accidents. This was, of course, illegal.

Then, some graffittiers complained that some graffitti was to commerate the deaths of some of their homies. Of course, graffitti remained illegal.

Censorship isn't just about content. It's also about the way the content is presented.

I think my sig may have prompted this thread. I am happy to let everybody know that it has been shortened to a sensible size.

ohms_law

It's freedom of expression.
OK, I accept that. However, where your freedom of expression hiders mine, we need to come to some sort of agreement in order to occupy the same space. Graffiti is only graffiti because it damages someone else's property. I have an equal right to say that I don't want your expression on my property as you have to express whatever you'd like. I'm a libertarian, not an anarchist.

I think my sig may have prompted this thread.
It may have prompted several others to create equally obnoxious signatures, but it didn't prompt this thread.

Look, the content of the signatures is completely irrelevant. When you create a signature though, you should be aware that it's going to be attached to every single post that you make. If the vertical footprint of the signature that you're creating is larger than... oh, about 2 lines of regular text, then it's really problematic.

Nice! We've hit a new low in blandness. Or is it a high?
Oh waaaa
This from the guy who's more conservative than I am...

If there is a way to turn those blasted things off then please spell it out, put it in a thread and sticky it. Those things annoy the **** out of me, and like ohms said it has gotten especially ridiculous of late.

OK, I accept that. However, where your freedom of expression hiders mine

It does not hinder your ability to express. Your ability to read what other people are trying to express, yes.

One of them toned it down...perhaps the others will follow suit.

And to think, we only had to ask.

"Freedom of expression"?

What freedom of expression? This is a private board. You have no rights but what is granted.

Another forum dealt with this issue by restricting sigs as follows:

10 lines. Blank lines count.
No size adjustments (upwards) (Downwards is okay so you can fit more in a line, but doesn't change the ten line limit.)
No pics.

I found that a LITTLE restrictive...but not overbearing.

I agree something needs to be done. Turning sigs off isn't the answer, either on a moderator OR individual user level. Sigs is one of the main routes a dynasty writer has to 'advertise.' :)

I shrank mine, some others have too, and personally I dont find them annoying. if people are annoyed, just turn them off and quit complaining

HoustonGM

Signatures don't annoy me. I like reading signatures usually, and as CatKnight said, I've found out about some dynasties through signatures. Its' when the signatures are bright and attractive and gigantic and start to take away from the flow of threads that they annoy me.

They didn't used to bother me either, in fact I thought cartman's WTF? cat pic was hilarious. Still do. But then yamiviet started in with his big purple Barney-sized letters, and that started it. I don't really get into the whole dynasty thing, so I'm quite happy with the whole business turned off now, thank you.

You know, rongar, your sig is three lines which is one line more than Ohms' suggestion of two vertical lines...

I define a sig as that appearing, horizontally immediately below the post, itself...I regard mine as being two items...or are you counting the space between the items, as being a "line"? Anyway, if I transgress, Ohms will sort me out!

As for vertical lines, I don't get that, at all ...

robinhoodnik

two vertical lines :)

See what you mean, RR - two horizontal lines placed
vertically...

Seriously, thank you for your correct example...I hadn't realised that double-spacing takes up un-necessary forum room - multiply by all who post here, and "Many a mickle makes a helluva muckle" (Yorkshire batsman, on scoring a century in cricket)

Belated thanks, too, are due to Filihok, who was also trying to show me the error of my ways.

Or we could just ignore you so we don't have to miss out on seeing sigs that we actually like. The problem with the turning off thing is it is global. Ignore however, is not.

Hi, Ms Wie,

Forgive me, but are you really she? I have a vested interest in your answer, since one of my few claims to fame, is that I introduced the only female member (Dutchess) to these forums.

It may be that you are a male fan of this fine young golfer -as am I - and merely
wished to pay tribute to her, by submitting her moniker as a user name.

Is this so?

I am a 28 year old male from Milwaukee, WI. I am a big fan of golf. Although I can hardly afford to play anymore.
