Are being so terrible to Papelbon, are booing him and saying overrated, chanting Mariano Rivera. They were being abnoxious towards his pregnant wife in the parade, and have been just awful. And Dioner Navarro just made an error...

I don't care about the booing...whatever, I hardly think he cares, either, since he's probably used to it. However, when fans start slagging on family members...that's taking things WAY too far. Those are people who, quite frankly, need a beating.

Agreed, if you don't want the attention don't make stupid comments to a reporter, now his wife and kid didn't deserve to be threaten(if thats what really happened).
As I've said before, shut up and play the game and then there's no problems.

What kind of closer doesn't want to close a game?
If he said, "naw...let the other guy do it", that would be pretty weak.

Yah - I think a little bit of natural closer mentality was taken way out of context by an eager-to-villify NY media market (not that that's a new thing)
On it's own, just over-sensationalizing and a lack of taste, but coupled with the fan reaction - it's almost inflammatory, and incredibly stupid.

But it makes for a good story.
The SH*THEADS threatening his wife. They are the real problem. Talk **** to the players. Talk **** to the fans. I love going to away games when there's 30'000 of them and 1 of me and everyone's letting it fly. But it is absolutely classless to to bring a guy's wife and baby into it.

He said Rivera was the greatest closer in history!
What's the problem?
That Papelbon said he wanted to pitch the ninth inning?
A closer who wants to close a game! Imagine that!
And since the game didn't end for another hundred innings after both Rivera and Papelbon pitched, the issue couldn't be less important.
Just a dust-up about a whole lot of nothing.

Yeah, but there is a difference between Yankee fans though. You have those ignorant ones that always defend themselves with "Well, we have 26 championships," when its been eight years without one. Those are probably the same jerks that did this to Papelbon and his family.
I do hate the Red Sox, but theres a difference between the true Yankees fans and the ignorant ones. We hate Boston, but we respect them. Unlike those other idiots that claim to be Yankee fans.

I don't care for either team (go brew crew), but I have a sneaky suspicion that if the all-star game was being player in Fenway Park, during its final season, & Rivera said that he should be the AL's closer instead of Papelbon, that he wouldn't be getting the benefit of the doubt here & that you guys would be saying "Sure, that's just him being a closer"
Guess I'm a little tired of the team who has had the 2nd highest payroll in the majors 6 of the last 8 years (the other years they had the 4th & 6th highest), continuing to try to play the "woe is me" card.

Hey - you back a team that spent 86 years as an underdog...witness a few historic one-game playoffs and meltdowns to the Mets, and you might have that chip on your shoulder, too.
Yes, Boston had a #2 payoll, and continues to sign some huge players to compete with...drumroll...the $200mil Yankees, who are in the same division. That's what finishing second for about a decade (or eight) will tend to do. (Even then, we manage to stay under the luxury tax threshold, and still trailed the yankees by ~$70mil per year. That's the equivalent of 6 Marlins rosters, if you're interested in more math.) Luckily, it takes more than just bucks to make a great team. And we've dropped down to 4th in payroll, behind the Mets and Tigers now. Hopefully we'll drop further.
I don't like the idea of our long-underdog team becoming a veritable dynasty...and honestly, I don't like big name, huge-money players (Manny and Drew, but especially poorly performing ones like Lugo). Honestly, it's like some kind of culture shock...great, but strange. But to just lump us in with the Yankees based on 8 years of payroll (which was always significantly less than the Yankees, even if 2nd in MLB) without considering the history that got us here is rather ignorant and uninformed.

If Boston was an underdog for 86 years I guess you can say every team in the history of baseball has been an underdog because the all powerful Yankees are too strong. Anyone who is calling the Red Sox a "longtime underdog team" should think twice about calling somebody else's comments "ignorant and uniformed".

How about, a team that has never won is an underdog. Say, the Rays this year were an underdog. The Reds and Pirates are underdogs, for being in the cellar for the last 10-20 years. The Rangers and Twins, both rebuilding. These classify as underdogs in the sense of today's game.
Another interpretation is in a team that has not won in a long time - a storied franchise like the Cubs. Any team that hasn't won it all in so long, there's an idea of a 'curse' hanging over it. If you'd like, I can replace 'Underdog' with 'team that has not won, despite great players and great seasons, causing much anguish and heartache to its extremely loyal fanbase, over an awe-inspiring 86 years'. Maybe that will clear it up for you.
I'm very satisfied with 2 world series wins, and a team that can best the Yankees on most days; I don't think we're underdogs anymore, nor do I think the Yankees are all-powerful. Please don't put words in my mouth; I commented on their factual payroll numbers, and nothing else.
Finally, since only 5 teams are in the AL East, the Yankees position as top payroll contender only seriously impacts those 4 teams in the same division, with lower payroll. It's not tremendously different from other divisions; I'm sure the Dodgers outspend their NL West rivals, and the Tigers outspend their AL Central counterparts. It is the amount by which they overspend their division rivals, coupled with the long-running post-season success that puts them in a different category. Surely, that is fairly easy to agree on?

I think having a team of "lovable losers" and being an underdog aren't quite the same. Losing in the playoffs isn't equal to losing 5 days/week for 5 months in my mind, but maybe that's just cause my team hasn't made the playoffs since I was born, so I don't take making the playoffs for granted as a given right.

I understand that. And for my part, at least, I don't take our post-season trips for granted. One reason I feel very lucky to have been a Sox fan, during the Pedro years in '99, and even the playoffs in '03. Many other teams haven't been to the playoffs in decades, so I certainly am not out to claim we're some poor wreck or something. We do great. We get outspent. But we still win.
Now, with the Rays hot on our heels, we're getting the dose of the same - our $134mil payroll is being beaten (swept, twice) by a young, talented, lower payroll team. Money doesn't decide success, which is great for equality in the sport.

OK...i admit I got kind of tired of reading the same whiney **** over and over and over, so I just skipped to the end and decided to post my thoughts on the actual topic this thread was created on.
Regardless of the Yankee / Red Sox my team is better than yours crapola, a few Yankee fans threatened a pregnant family member of a player....and by default a large number of yankee fans pretty much condoned/supported the action by acting like fools defending the action and booing about nothing really. Papelbon did complement Rivera and said Rivera should close. No question about that.
Let me repeat the important part, "a few yankee fans threatened a pregnant family member of a player". Absolutely appaling for anyone to do something like that, and ANYONE in here defending the Yankee fans for it are...well i'm actually going to refrain here because this whole thing boils me up and I want to say something I'll regret.
I don't see an issue with Papelbon getting booed in NY, but after such an incident you can't boo him. Roles reversed, Rivera would be cheered in Fenway....i have no doubt on that. Sure, it'll make Yankee fans feel better to say thats not true, but thats BS....it most certainly is.
In all seriousness, I kind of lose respect for alot of Yankee fans in here turning this thread into something it isn't and in way defending these actions. As a father, I think Papelbon showed great composure.....I know I couldn't have been so strong.

Way to rub it in. I was 2 years old in '82. I apoligize though because I lumped all Red Sox fans in the same "whiney" category. That probably wasn't necassary. But I know a couple of Red Sox fans personally, and they do whine alot. ( They all have lived in the Milwaukee area thier whole lives:eek: witch made it harder to understand) But either way I was wrong to assume that all Red Sox fans are like this. Alloutwar had some valid points. But I have never considered the Red Sox underdogs. Anyway Go BREWERS. And if we go on to the playoffs remember it was after the Red Sox swept us that our run started.
