1. Do some pitches increase groundball chances? Pitches like sinkers ala Halladay and Wang?
2. Tagging up... How far does the fielder have to be to successfully tag up? I always get thrown out even if the fielder has an arm of 70+, my baserunner has a speed of 70+ and the distance is > 200 and < 300.
3. When pitching, how do you hit the batter? Sometimes when I have to issue an intentional walk, I would really rather hit the batter and give him first base.

Not sure about the first two, but I know that you currently can't hit a batter. I agree, it does suck :(

I'm pretty sure the answer to this is yes, but I'm betting it's much more dependent on the pitchers predicted groundball rate.
2. Tagging up... How far does the fielder have to be to successfully tag up?
There is no definitive answer to this. It depends on a variety of factors.
3. When pitching, how do you hit the batter? Sometimes when I have to issue an intentional walk, I would really rather hit the batter and give him first base.
Does it matter?

Does it matter?
In a petty and cosmetic way, sure it does. It would make me feel a whole lot better if I can hit a rival player with a pitch. :D
And what factors affect tagging up? From the games I've played, any baserunner with speeds of 70 to low 80s will always get thrown out if the distance is less than 250 feet, even if the arm of the fielder is in the low 70s. Any distance from 280 up and I tag at near 100%.
Is there any way to set the perimeters on when to tag up?

Distance, batter speed, fielder arm, luck, etc. I haven't seen the extreme occurences that you seem to be seeing every time. I don't pay much attention to the distances, but I'll keep an eye out and make some tag-ups at lesser distances.

Nope. If you're playing manager mode/player mode, you can decide as it'll give you a yes/no dialog.

not always
On any flyball to the outfield, with runners on base, you get the option to tag up or not with the lead runner.

I have to agree with HGM, on any flyball to the outfield with runners on base (even if said runner has 60 speed and outfielder has a 90 arm) I always get the option to tag up.

Yah, small but annoying point about the HBP.
/rant
No matter what , does 4 lobs to the plate really = 4 pitches ?
any more than 4 obligatory type tosses over to 1st to hold the runner ?
think about it 2 IBB = 8% of a pitchers stamina. lol
i dont think so ! ;)
(but it is a pitch , so it gets counted as if it was a guys best heater...)
so yeah i wanna bean a couple dudes instead of issuing the inexplicably arm sapping IBB's
/end rant

My impression, after many games using "Player" mode in BM8 & 7, is that the pitches that are struck in the low part of the plate, tend to fly out or pop-up.
I haven't noticed the ability of particular pitchers to induce the ground-ball out, my bad, I'm just glad for 'em to get an out, anyway that they can!
I think that it's probably as Houston suggests...that the hurler's groundball average determines this ...to see your guy's gba click Options/Commissioner/Edit Player (on the pitcher's scorecard), after which the pitcher's gb % can be read in the RH lower corner.
To read all of your bullpen's individual gba, it's probably best to click Players/Sortable Stats/Pitchers/Column Headings, then highlight "Ground Ball Average", so that it shows in all the stats of your various pitchers.
Also in BM7&8, there is provision for tagging up in Team/Strategies by scrolling through the options: when you come to "Running/Tag up" slide the pointer to the extreme right, both your boys, and the AI's lads can now do this.
In BMs 8&7, distances seem to make no difference...no matter how slow the baserunner; how strong the fielders arm, once the runner tags up, he generally makes it to the next base, or home plate.
From later posts, I deduce that in BM9 - which I don't have - there's an option introduced during the actual play "Should runners tag up?" or something.
Dunno about hitting a batter...never tried it...for all I know, in "Player" mode, it might not even be possible to issue an intentional walk, at will, such are the vagaries of pitching in that mode!
