That desperately needed him taking out that spice rack while thrashing around, rather than just knocking the phone off the hook (by the way...a ROTARY DIAL PHONE? What year is this?!) Actually, accidentally smashing a hole in the drywall would be rather amusing, as well.

I think that Bell (remember the monopoly?) came around and took nearly all of them out of my area around 1978 or so. Remember that they were hard wired into the wall? You couldn't go out and buy a new phone and just plug it into the wall jack back then.
