Clay,

There are two ways I'd approach adding coaching strategies and still maintain the desired General Manager structure of the game. We are actually GMs not coaches are we not?

1.) Allow us to hire and fire coaches with tendancies. Use a scouting report or ratings (similar to your players ratings) to describe what a coaches tendancies are and how he might affect the current roster of players and they ratings.

2.) Instead of a generic roster screen with starters listed the same for every team - connect a strategic platoon template to every coach. The starting positions available would coinside with his strategic philosophy. The starting offense and defensive platoons would match his belief system. Maybe give every coach three platoons on offense and defense. A standard platoon of his offensive strategy - and two others; a goalline set and passing set.

Example: If I hired a Run and Shoot coach my team's starters menu would not allow for a Fullback or a Tightend in the line-up. I could of course start a tightend at one of the wideout positions but that player would be playing out of position. I could expect my TEs and FBs to play a roll in the goalline platoons or passing platoons. A coach that uses the 3-4 would not use two tackles much of the time.

Just some thoughts on adding coaches and a different way to build one's roster around a particular type of coach. As a GM that's part of the challenge of working with a head coach. Or why I might hire a particular head coach.

You make a good point.

A lot of teams do not use a 4-3-4 defence. It makes no sense to have 4 offensive tackles and 4 defensive ends if you are going 3-4-4....

Also, if you have a powerful linebacker corps, it might be better to go 3-4-4. It depends upon the personnel you are able to get.
