View Full Version : Who would you take #1 overall in a draft?

I ask my friends this alot. Say MLB put every player into a draft pool (majors and minors) and had a sort of fantasy draft. However, you absorb the players' contract and salary upon drafting them. If you have the #1 overall pick, who would you take?

Hanley Ramirez.

Either Albert Pujols or Hanley, or Wright maybe.

Derek Jeter!

Hanley, Hamilton, or Lincecum

RedsoxRockies
08-06-2008, 09:21 PM
Hamilton or Utley would not be bad

08-06-2008, 09:21 PM
Lincecum or Joe Mauer. Young, relatively cheap, long term control. edit: Ooh, Hamiltons not a bad idea

RedsoxRockies
08-06-2008, 09:22 PM
Derek Jeter!

In his prime he may have been worthy of the late first or 2nd, but with his awful contract and declining skill, I would say maybe 8th or 9th

Not as important as you think it is! And there are plenty other better, cheaper players who are like that. Pedroia, Youk, Helton, Halladay, many others

Hanley Ramirez, Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Tim Lincecum or Joba Chamberlain.

Hanley. He's the youngest, surest thing

metsguy234

Hanley Ramirez or Pujols.

Brandon Webb/Jake Peavy/Johan Santana probably wouldn't be far behind them.

RedsoxRockies

Pitching wise Webb, Peavy, Lincum would be my choices.

HoustonGM

I'd always go with a position player in this sort of thing. Position players are much more stable and less apt to blow out their careers.

Yeah but the question was who we would pick You gave your choice. Mine is Jeter!

metsguy234

I think Hamilton is too old to really be of use. And I think he will flame out after one good season this year.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. My real pick would be John Maine (well, after I coerce Robin Ventura, Mike Piazza, and John Franco out of retirement to play for my expansion team) :D

He had a good season last year, albeit injury-plagued....

and...he's...27

You confuse me a lot man. First, anybody over 35 except for some players have no use, completely ignoring performance.....now 27 is too old to be of use?

Hamilton, Mauer, Peavy, Webb, Wright...all VERY tempting, but I'd have to go along with the Hanley Ramirez party line.

I would take McCan, who is badly underrated, over Mauer. And MetsGuy, soon you will be saying 20 is too old Lol

This is why you have to do at least cursory research.

Pujols. And it's not close.

metsguy234
08-06-2008, 10:12 PM
Pujols. And it's not close.

Well Hanley is a five tool player. He has speed, power, contact, good fielding, and the fifth thing.Pujols is a four tool player- he has it all except for speed.

Well, I'm glad you're citing something you don't really know in defense of Hanley. The "tools" are hitting for average, hitting for power, baserunning speed and ability, throwing skill, and fielding.

The "tools" are an archaic method for determining a player's value. Pujols gets on base way more often and strikes out a third of the time that Hanley does. Also, Hanley isn't a particularly great fielder and Pujol's throwing ability at first is irrelevant.

Besides, while Hanley has great stats in the regular season, he hasn't gotten a chance to perform in the postseason, which can obviously affect players, the biggest such case being A-Rod. However, Pujol's postseason numbers are as ethereal as what he puts up in the regular season. He is one of the clutchest players in the majors. And he wasn't voted "Most Feared Hitter in Baseball" for nothing.

Considering the dearth in good offensive SS I'd probably pick Hanley Ramirez.

2nd- Pujols
3rd- Tough one, I'm gonna say Utley

Another reason to take Pujols: he's earning about half as much as A-Rod this year. Plus, he has arguably better offensive production, not to mention he's 5 years younger.

I guess another position that has a sever shortage would be catcher. How many young good catchers are there: Mauer, McCann, Martin?
You could build a team around one of those as well.
Pujols is one of the best, imho, but I think 1st base is loaded with talented players atm.

Hanley Ramirez or Evan Longoria.

Was gonna say Vidro and Sexson, but it was already taken.

chuckwillard

Priority 1: a good hitting, solid defensive catcher. I'd pick Mauer.

Priority 2: a solid ace at the top of the pitching staff. I'd take Webb, Santana, Peavy, Beckett, or Sabathia.

Priority 3: middle infield. Hanley Ramirez and Ian Kinsler.

Priority 4: anchor the bullpen. I'd say Rivera, but he's getting up there. I'd probably go with Papelbon.

Priority 5: defense in center field. I'd take Jim Edmonds or Andruw Jones, if I could go back about 4 years. Now, probably Ankiel impresses me most.

Personally I'd lean toward Mccann or Mauer, Simply beacuse finding a cather that has both +hitting and defense is close to impossible. (but most poeple wouls over look that, so Id trade down in the edn and pick up more mid round picks :))

Sizemore perhaps.

Ellsbury has some serious kinks to work out in his hitting game.

I wouldn't pick Jay Bruce based on two months work.

BJ Upton I'd consider.

I like Ankiel's combination of defensive ability and power hitting.

.

I like Ankiel's combination of defensive ability and power hitting.
Sizemore has similar, if not better, range, despite a worse arm, but he's a great power hitter, with a better eye than Ankiel, and much more speed, and younger. I'd take Sizemore over Ankiel any day.
