I looked but couldn't find it: is there a way of adjusting the idle time so that the board wasn't so quick to log you out?

The board logs you out?

No, there's not. It's set to 15 minutes though... how long should it be?

Since when does the board automatically log people out? That never happens to me...

I think if you don't do anything to the screen for 15 minutes it logs you out.

I've never had that happen to me...*shrug*

Me neither, mainly because my screen goes blank after 2 minutes of not touching it.

If you don't click a button or a link for 15 minutes, you're logged out. Once you do then you're automatically logged back in, but you're history is reset (which does suck). Still, it is 15 minutes, and it's really easy to work around. If you're writing a post or reading a long thread, either preview the post or reload the thread (or, even better, open the main forum index in a separate tab) and you've reset the clock.

I haven't noticed anything happen, and I've had one page open for longer than 15 minutes...
Whatever. :)

I tend to shuttle between tabs on my browser a lot, and some of them have automatic logouts as well. I'd just like to set the auto-logout to longer, or just turn it off so I don't have to keep flipping between tabs every 15 minutes and refreshing every page.

Here's a couple of solutions for you.
Firefox has a utility built into it to reload pages at set intervals. Load a page, then right click anywhere on the page to pull up the context menu:
17795
I usually use the 5 minute setting, since that's more than enough.
The other option is to load the Currently Active Users page in a tab:
17794
That page refreshes automatically every minute, so that'll keep you online as well. The only real problems with that are that it adds to server load, and because of that it'll occasionally fail if you keep it open for a long time. if it does fail and you don't notice, then you'll be logged out if you don't notice for 15 minutes.

Doesn't happen with Opera, plus if you set your settings to remember me it rarely happens. BMO is a 24 hour sign in period though. After 24 hours you have to log back in.

After 24 hours you have to log back in.
That's exactly what oriole^ is talking about, only on the forums it's 15 minutes. The forum has a "remember me" function as well, so if you are logged out and refresh the page then you'll automatically be logged back in. The only real problem with that is that it resets your history, so if you have unread posts when you're logged out they won't still be "unread" when you log back in.
The behavior in Opera the same as it is in any other browser. This is standard cookie/forum behavior, not anything browser specific, and it's controlled by the server/forum software anyway, not you're browser.

See that's weird because I have left the forums up for a while and never been logged out.

Upper left hand corner of every page, where it says "Welcome, <username>", what does it say under that for "You last visited: "?

See, you were logged out. If you had stayed logged in then that would say something like "yesterday", or something similar.
