I joined onto a team that has a terrible financial standing. Some long-term high salaries and the team has maxed out its funds. What are some suggestions you might have to save the team??

Ugh. Sorry to hear that, LUNCHBOX99. :(
Your only recourse, if you have the patience to stay with this team [it'll be rewarding when you get them back on their feet again!], might be to suffer through a few years of struggles with them. When my Milwaukee team went broke, I ended up having to suffer through 2 years of helplessly watching folks come through town then leave when their contract expires [not to mention have to say bye to Geoff Jenkins] and inability to spend on Farm System and Scouting [which is my favourite way of building]. Eventually, the higher price tag folks were gone, we slowly climbed back out of the red and are now in the process of coming back [at least I hope]!!! :)
It helps if you're in a FastSim league since the rougher seasons get by quicker. :)
I have taken over some very bad teams. The Twins was one of the worse, an I have the payroll to 175 or so an have made the playoffs for the last few years ( I need another hitter).
What worked :
I traded high priced players along with one good player in just about every trade, it sucks to see some of the players that where rookies that I traded away, but I knew that I would not be able to sign them. I knew that people would want to the good player so I package him up with a high priced player, most times I got good deals done. I myself go after pitching ( good pitching will always beat good hitting , in theory)
What does not work :
Signing 33-35 + year old players to high priced contracts, they just seems to hang on an on an on..............
Dumping to much money into players that have only played a year or so, but never really have put up the numbers ( not do to playing time)
Those are just my idea on things, I am sure other things work for other players.
