View Full Version : Bleeding the Seal Brown & Burnt Orange: A Cleveland Browns Dynasty

I will be starting in 2008 with the Cleveland Browns on Mogul difficulty. Rosters are FM09 standard.
JULY 3, 2008-- With the sale of the team to former GM Phil Savage due to medical conditions of the team's former owner, a new GM needed to be hired fast. All of the experienced ones were gone and the team was pretty much set, so the young financial mogul Chris Muller stepped in to take the reigns of Cleveland Browns GM.
"I feel honored to have the opportunity to manage the team I grew up following - the Cleveland Browns." When asked what his plans were, Muller replied, "For now, nothing. I think the team looks fine where it's at. We have some weaknesses but we are going to let the season unfold to see what adjustments need to be made. The team won 10 games last season...how bad could they be?"
Some outside sources say Muller is planning on gutting the team if they underperform this season, so we will have to wait and see how it plays out.
-------
GOALS FOR THE 2008 SEASON
Win 10 games
Make the playoffs
Defense allows less than 20 points per game (average)
Derek Anderson +7 TD/INT ratio
Jamal Lewis 4.0 yds/carry
Braylon Edwards 1,200 yards receiving
All very attainable goals for a team that won 10 games last season. Stay tuned for Week 1!

BROWNS 27 - Cowboys 9
:) Derek Anderson 300 yards passing, 2 TD
:) Jamal Lewis 144 total yards, 1 TD
:) Corey Williams 1.5 sacks
:) Sean Jones 5 tackles, 1 INT
:) We allowed only 244 total yards (79 rushing, 165 passing)
 We were sacked 3 times
 Our 3rd down conversion rate was only 61%
 Our running game was awful - only 2.8 yards per carry and a total of 82 yards
 Tony Romo didn't hook up with T.O. in the end zone
 We held one of the most potent offensive teams to just 9 points and no touchdowns
Stay tuned for week two...

WEEK 2: Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) @ CLEVELAND BROWNS (1-0)
The Steelers manhandled the Houston Texans in Week 1, holding them to just 213 total yards in a 35-7 win. Roethlisberger had 4 passing TD while the defense had 1 sack and 3 INT. Should be a very tough game.
BROWNS 34 - Steelers 24
:) We beat our division rivals at home in a thunder storm!
:) Derek Anderson 2 passing TD
:) Jamal Lewis 137 total yards, 1 TD
:) Corey Williams 2.0 sacks
:) 362 yards of total offense, 6.0 yards/rush on the ground
 47% completion percentage
 Defense allowed 7.6 yards/rush
 Defense allowed 376 yards of total offense
 Defense allowed 3 sacks
After the game GM Chris Muller said, "It's great that we have been able to start the season off 2-0, especially against the teams that we have played, as they are in the upper echelon of teams in this league. We do need to tighten up the defense a little, though, because nearly 400 yards of total offense being given up is not acceptable for this team. Coach will be working with them all week."
Week 3 Preview
@ Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens (2-0) edged out the Texans in Week 2, 26-17. While the offense was great, it was the well-known Ravens defense that won the game. The Ravens held the Texans to 69 yards rushing and forced 5 turnovers in the road win.
Week 3 should be a fairly even matchup between the Ravens and Browns. The Ravens are averaging 22.5 ppg while giving up only 15 ppg. The Cleveland Browns are giving up 16 ppg but averaging 30 ppg on offense.
"Our offense has looked good the first two games but we cannot allow the Ravens to put up many points - their defense is too good and it should be a low-scoring affair if our defense can hold strong," said GM Chris Muller.
Stay tuned for Week 3...

WEEK 3: CLEVELAND BROWNS @ Baltimore Ravens

:) Defense only allowed 2.9 yards/rush
 26 yards rushing
 Derek Anderson 2 INT, 47% completion
 4 penalties for 26 yards
 2/12 in 3rd down conversions
:( T Joe Thomas out 2 weeks with a broken collarbone
"Just an overall terrible performance," said GM Chris Muller. "Our rush defense was much improved as we worked on this week, but it seems we forgot to put our offense on the practice field all together. (Joe) Thomas is out for two weeks so there will be some minor adjustments before game time next week."
Week 4 Preview
@ Cincinnati Bengals
After losing T Joe Thomas and evaluating the roster, GM Chris Muller made a few changes, signing some minor backups to the practice squad. One larger move made was trading CB Gary Baxter to the Patriots in exchange for 25 year old T Ryan O'Callaghan. "Ryan is a great young talent and will be an excellent fit for our offensive line. We needed a little more depth and we got it," said Muller in regard to the trade.
In Week 3, the Bengals (0-3) lost to the Super Bowl Champions New York Giants (2-1) 31-21. Carson Palmer looked excellent throwing for over 240 yards and 2 TD but the defense could not contain Eli Manning and the Giants on this rainy day. Despite the loss, the Bengals looked great on the ground, averaging 5.6 yards/rush.
"Any team that can get nearly 6 yards per carry is one that needs to be heavily focused on. We'll be working on rush defense this week...among other things," said Coach Crennel.
Week 4 should be a shootout with two potent AFC North offenses and two struggling defenses.
Stay tuned for Week 4...

WEEK 4: CLEVELAND BROWNS (2-1) @ Cincinnati Bengals (0-3)
Bengals 38 - BROWNS 31
:) QB Derek Anderson 230 yards passing, 2 TD
:) LB Andra Davis 8 tackles, 2 INT
:) Only 1 turnover offensively
 QB Carson Palmer TORCHED our defense for 340 yards, 4 TD
 Defense allowed a 76% completion rate on passes thrown
 Defense allowed 4.5 yards/rush
 Chad Ocho Cinco & T.J. Houshmandzadeh combined for 13 receptions, 165 yards, 3 TD
 Where was the defense today?
As predicted, it was an offensive shootout. There was NO defense today, whatsoever. "The passing defense was horrible, as was the rush defense. There will be some MAJOR evaluation going into the Bye Week," said GM Chris Muller.

Week 6 Preview
New York Giants
The Browns (2-2) will be taking on the former Super Bowl Champion New York Giants (2-2) in Cleveland on Monday Night Football. The Giants are coming off of a Week 5 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in a 16-14 nail biter. Eli Manning threw 3 INT and the Giants only had 189 yards of offense, so it was clearly the defense that kept them in the game.
The Browns will be going against a very strong New York defense with one of the best defensive lines in the league. Newly acquired LB Jonathan Vilma will help stop the Browns offensively as well. Cleveland will need to really lock down on New York's receivers as well as stop Brandon Jacobs from running through them.
Experts are predicting a lopsided victory for the Giants in this Monday Nighter.

 3 turnovers
 2 sacks allowed
 Derek Anderson 2 INT
 Defense allowed 4.6 yards/rush and 152 total yards rushing
 QB Eli Manning 213 passing yards, 2 passing TD
 First Downs: Giants - 19, Browns - 9
 Time of Posession: Giants - 38:37, Browns - 21:23
This game was an absolute disgrace for the Browns. They were wiped off of their own field on national television on Monday night.
There are rumors on whether or not Derek Anderson will remain the starting quarterback for the Browns after the 3-game skid. "Yes, we played terribly as the whole nation saw, but we are not ones to throw in the towel. Derek (Anderson) is our starting quarterback next week and will remain our starting quarterback until further notice. We have complete faith in him and the Browns. It was a disappointing loss, but nothing we can't bounce back from. We just have to figure out what adjustments need to be made and make them," GM Chris Muller said relatively calm after Monday's embarrassment.
It still isn't clear on who will be the starting quarterback in the second half of the Browns 2008 campaign, so we'll have to play the 'wait-and-see' game. GM Chris Muller seems fairly content with his current starting lineup on the outside, but few know what is really going on inside that locker room.
Week 7 Preview
@ Washington Redskins (1-5)
The Washington Redskins at 1-5 are one of the worst teams in the league right now, so the Browns may have a chance to pick up where they left off after the first two phenomenal victories of the season.
In Week 6 the 'Skins lost a close one to the St. Louis Rams (4-1), 23-20. Despite having what many would refer to as a young superstar in Jason Campbell on their hands, the Redskins have continued to play veteran QB Todd Collins behind center. Collins threw 3 INT against the Rams while their running game faltered as well. The 'Skins, behind star RB Clinton Portis, rushed for only 63 yards in the loss.
According to the media, it seems as if Derek Anderson will remain the starter for the Browns in this game. Word is Coach Crennel will run the ball much more in order to maintain possession of the ball and keep the Redskins' defense tired. "If we can keep their offense off the field, we will have a very good chance at winning this one," said Coach Romeo Crennel.
Experts are predicting a very low-scoring affair with the Browns edging out the Redskins in a close game.

WEEK 7: CLEVELAND BROWNS (2-3) @ Washington Redskins (1-5)
BROWNS 20 - Redskins 13
:) Derek Anderson 316 passing yards, 2 TD, 69% completion
:) Joe Jurevicius 6 receptions, 117 yards
:) Kamerion Wimbley 2.0 sacks
:) Held 'Skins to 82 yards rushing
 65 yards rushing
 3 turnovers, 3 sacks allowed
 5 penalties for 38 yards
 After a 1-6 record for the Redskins...still no Jason Campbell??
 Derek Anderson may have shut up the critics who were already throwing on their Brady Quinn jerseys...
Well, it wasn't the prettiest game, but the Browns got it done and evened their record out in a much-needed win. "I'm very pleased with the efforts of the Browns today, now we need to keep it going," said Muller. He had no comment on the 'P' word, however, when asked (Playoffs).
Week 8 Preview
@ Jacksonville Jaguars (4-2)
The Jags are coming off a Bye Week so they should be fully rested for their upcoming home game against the Browns. With a potent offense featuring QB David Garrard (1,800 yards passing with 16 TD this season), RB Maurice Jones-Drew (541 yards rushing, 4 TD), and WR Matt Jones (472 yards receiving, 7 TD) the Browns will need to bring their A-game.

WEEK 8: CLEVELAND BROWNS (3-3) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (4-2)
Jaguars 41 - BROWNS 28
:) Derek Anderson 377 yards passing, 4 TD, 71% completion
:) Kellen Winslow 7 receptions, 150 yards receiving, 1 TD
:) Andra Davis 11.5 tackles
 Jamal Lewis 36 yards rushing (2.1 yards/carry)
 5 penalties for 30 yards
 Short possession time
 Defense allowed 157 yards rushing (5.4 yards/carry)
It was a shootout today and while neither defense looked stunning, the Jaguars offense simply out-powered that of the Browns. The lack of running game for Cleveland has really hurt them the past few weeks. "I don't know whether it's our offensive line or something is going on with Jamal (Lewis), but either way we are going to get to the bottom of it by next week," said Coach Romeo Crennel.
Either way, the Browns will need to string together some wins over the next few weeks if they even want to entertain the possibility of a playoff matchup. Over the next three weeks they play the Ravens, the Broncos, and the Bills - neither of whom are over .500 as of today.
Week 9 Preview
vs. Baltimore Ravens (4-4)
The current Browns will take on the former Browns in a conference rivalry in Cleveland. The Ravens are struggling on offense this year, keeping QB Troy Smith behind center despite his 12 interceptions thrown. Also, highly-touted RB Willis McGahee's rushing average is only 3.2 yards/carry. LB Ray Lewis is out for 6 more weeks with a severe shoulder injury for the defense.
This is a very winnable game for the Browns. If they can get their run game going they should come out of this one with a home victory and even their record back up.

RB JEROME HARRISON INSERTED AS BROWNS STARTING RB FOR WEEK 9
Coach Romeo Crennel stated at a press conference this afternoon that the Browns will bench starting RB Jamal Lewis and place youngster Jerome Harrison in the starter's role. "Something is going on with Jamal lately so we are deciding to shake it up a little," said Coach Crennel.
They definitely need to shake things up as the running game has looked absolutely awful as of late. Jamal Lewis is only averaging 3.5 yards/carry but has 3 fumbles and only 2 TD. The Browns had been trying to get him the ball more, but nothing was working. Harrison is a third year RB out of Washington State and has seen only limited action this year, carrying the ball 5 times for 39 yards.

WEEK 9: Baltimore Ravens (4-4) @ CLEVELAND BROWNS (3-4)
Ravens 27 - BROWNS 13
:) Jerome Harrison 4.3 yards/carry, 75 total yards, 1 TD
:) D'Qwell Jackson 9.5 tackles
 Derek Anderson 4 INT, 54% completion
 Braylon Edwards 1 reception, 13 yards
 4 turnovers, 2 sacks allowed
 6 penalties for 32 yards
 Low possession time
The extremely low time of possession and lack of defense are completely killing the Browns this season. Underachieving QB Troy Smith routed the Browns for 3 TD while DE Trevor Pryce got to QB Derek Anderson for 2.0 sacks.
The Browns looked terrible...again. The running game was improved but nothing else was. At this point in time, the management staff has to at least consider the idea of letting Brady Quinn get some snaps.
Week 10 Preview
vs. Denver Broncos (3-5)
Denver is coming off a close loss to the Miami Dolphins, who are no good to begin with. Like we have said many times before, this is a WINNABLE game for the Browns - but it's up to them to win it or not.
RB Selvin Young is averaging nearly 5 yards/carry for the Broncos, so they will have to put out at least something that resembles a defense next week or they're doomed.

Post-Game Breakdown
:) Derek Anderson 286 yards passing, 1 TD
:) Defense had 3 sacks
:) Only 1 turnover
:) Majority of possession time
 2.4 yards/carry offensively
 Defense allowed 7.4 yards/carry
 Where were the Special Teams when Hall ran that TD back?
 Jay Cutler ran for a TD?
A pretty close game, not too disappointing, although the Browns have now pretty much killed their playoff hopes.
"It was a loss, yeah. Hall ran a kickoff back on us and we let Cutler rush for a TD - those were the glaring issues. We also allowed over 7 yards per carry - any team that can get that kind of yardage better win or they have something wrong with their management," said Coach Crennel.
Rumor has it Coach Crennel is on the hot seat now. Week 2 of the Jerome Harrison experiment did not go as planned, but Profootballtalk.com reports that the Browns may release Jamal Lewis at the end of the year, proving they truly believe they no longer need his services. This is of course, just a rumor.
Week 11 Preview
@ Buffalo Bills (3-6)
The Bills are coming off a blowout loss from the Patriots in New England. Their only real offensive weapon this season seems to be Marshawn Lynch (565 yards, 2 TD in 9 games). Trent Edwards is having a rough start to the year, so the Bills will probably utilize the strong run game.
The Browns have no injuries on offense or defense so they should be physically ready to go. Mentally...who knows. They will go with Jerome Harrison at running back again, to see if he can showcase any of his skills against a weaker team before making any major decisions on the roster.

Not one single media member could get to any of the Browns coaches or players after this one. We can probably expect some HUGE changes after this disaster of a game, and season...
Week 12 Preview
vs. Houston Texans (2-8)
The Texans just lost to the Colts 34-0 so they know what it's like to get blown out too. They have a fairly weak offense but the defense is very strong lead by DeMeco Ryans and Mario Williams.
At 2-8, they look harmless, but the way the Browns have been playing, anything can happen.
Stay tuned for Week 12...

BROWNS GM, COACH GET TOGETHER TO MAKE TREMENDOUS CHANGES
While it seems as if coach Romeo Crennel is on the hot seat after starting 3-7 this season, it looks like his time isn't up just yet. Sources close to the team say GM Chris Muller will let Romeo finish out the year.
In the mean time, they have gotten together and made some pretty significant changes to the Browns. First of all, once heralded starter Derek Anderson will be put on the bench in favor of 2nd year man Brady Quinn. "It's time for a change, and that time is now," said Muller. Anderson had completed just 53% of his passes this season while throwing 22 INT in just 10 games. Brady can't be much worse.
Also, the Browns will go back to Jamal Lewis at the starting running back position, an interesting move because rumors had it just a week ago he would be released by season's end. We'll wait to see how this one plays out.
On a side note, DE Robaire Smith is out for 3 weeks with a neck injury so he'll be replaced by rookie Melila Purcell out of Hawaii.

Jamal Lewis was traded to the New England Patriots for $1M in cash (we could not find any other takers, so it was this or release him)
Sean Jones, although a great asset to the team, was traded because of his extremely high salary ($5.11M) to the Dallas Cowboys for young stud RB Felix Jones and $4M in cash
Steve Heiden was released
Terry Cousin was released
Derek Anderson was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for DE Quentin Groves
LB Andra Davis was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for superstar prospect QB Kevin Kolb (he will compete with Quinn for the starting job - Davis was just resigned but we got an offer from Philadelphia we couldn't refuse)
Signed T Matt Light
Signed G Steve Huchinson
Released DE Corey Williams
Signed G Pete Kendall

We drafted as follows:
DE Trevor Musser (87/90)
T Alex Boone (77/81)
DE Tyson Jackson (72/81)
FB Matthew Jones (73/87) (we needed a blocking FB really bad)
WR Terrence Read (73/86)
CB Mike Laroche (61/75)
S Jerome Heston (62/74)
On a side note, we resigned Phil Dawson to a 1 year deal because we could not draft a kicker.

We lost a lot of talent during our cleaning out this past offseason. We are lowering the goals a little from last year.
Goal #1: Rookie DE's will combine for 10 sacks
Goal #2: Have a QB with a passer rating greater than 90.0
Goal #3: Have a RB average 4.0 yards per carry
Goal #4: Have a LB reach 100 tackles
Goal #5: Win at least 4 games (match last season's total...sad)

Week 1: Miami Dolphins (0-0) @ Cleveland Browns (0-0)
Dolphins 20 - Browns 17
The Good
Kevin Kolb 269 yds passing, 1 TD
Felix Jones 74 total yds, 1 TD
Kellen Winslow 6 rec, 129 yds, 1 TD
Kamerion Wimbley 8 tkl, 2 sacks
D'Qwell Jackson 10 tkl
The Bad
57% completion
3.3 yds/carry, 69 total yards rushing
Allowed 118 rushing yds
2 sacks allowed
Overall decent performance for a team that has been together a couple of months. GM Chris Muller decided not to fire Romeo Crennel in the long run, stating "I think he knows what he's doing." Crennel has one year left on this contract so it's make-or-break for him. The Browns will play the Texans (0-1) next week in Houston.
---
Week 2: Cleveland Browns (0-1) @ Houston Texans (0-1)
Texans 24 - Browns 17
The Good
Kevin Kolb 303 passing yds, 1 TD
Felix Jones 94 yds rushing, 4.4 yds/carry
Kellen Winslow 9 rec, 104 yds, 1 TD
Braylon Edwards 7 rec, 102 yds, 1 TD
D'Qwell Jackson 11 tkl
The Bad
Phil Dawson 1/3 FG
Matt Schaub 282 passing yds, 2 TD
DeMeco Ryans 13 tkl
Definitely should have won this game, but Kolb and Jones are starting to look productive. The Browns are definitely in a REBUILDING mode, so it will take time to string together consistent wins.

WEEK 3 - BYE

Week 4: Cleveland Browns (0-2) @ Cincinnati Bengals (2-1)
Bengals 27 - Browns 16
The Good
Kolb 246 yds passing, 1 TD
5.1 yds/carry
The Bad
Palmer 292 yds passing, 3 TD
5 sacks allowed
The pass defense looked miserable against one of the league's best passing teams. Next week the Browns play the Ravens (2-1) at home. On a side note CB Eric Wright will be moved to safety, S Mike Adams will hit the bench, and CB Daven Holly will step into the starting lineup opposite Brandon McDonald. Trying to improve the pass defense a little.
---
Week 5: Baltimore Ravens (2-1) @ Cleveland Browns (0-3)
Ravens 16 - Browns 3
The Good
DT Shaun Rogers - 9 tkl
LB D. Jackson - 8 tkl
LB Shantee Orr - 1 sack (his second in as many games)
The Bad
Dawan Landry - 9.5 tkl
An overall UGLY game. Yet another loss for the Browns. We have switched back to the 3-4 defense and Shantee Orr has taken over where Andra Davis was last year. Seems to be working okay. Next week is the Cardinals (4-1) at home.

I like the moves overall. Should have a better running game with Jones pounding the ball behind that front five. One thing I'm wondering...how are Wright and McDonald rated? I'm a little surprised you didn't go for a corner until round 6.

I apologize, but somehow the file got corrupted and I lost my dynasty. Not sure if it was FBM09 or my computer...probably the latter though since this thing is ancient. Anyways, check out my new dynasty (http://forum.sportsmogul.com/showthread.php?p=1178317#post1178317) instead.
