no braner in my opinion (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3689749)
I like the move... i mean he has a 3 mil buyout. its only 9 million... where are you going to find a 35-40 2B .385+ OBP machine for 6 million???
oh and only have to have him for 1 year...

He's got trade value too, so they could flip him for some prospects at the deadline. Assuming the Padres are as bad as everyone expects them to be this upcoming season.

ACTUALLY BECAUSE of the 3 million buyout clause it meant it cost them 6 million....but yes you are right - it was a simple choice - now who are they gonna trade him too ? ;)
(before anyone says anything I know he has a no trade clause BUT would accept a move to a contender in certain circumstances)

Unless they trade him, this was a bad idea... too much money for someone who's so old

Teams shouldn't be spending this much money on older players though... maybe I'd sign him for 1 year 3 mil... but any more is ridiculous

its an option... and if they let him go its costs them 3 million for NOTHING. its 9 mill but you will get NOTHING for him if you let him go except have to spend for nothing.
no to mention you will be able to trade him mid season which he already agreed he would do it they are out of it

Metsguy old-player-hate again?
Age doesn't matter in the sense that you're talking about. Only performance does.

I'd say a combination of the two, but more the latter.

29 year old with that performance- I'd gladly pick up that option on
38 year old- No way- too much of an INJURY RISK

It's not an expensive option, AT ALL. It's incredibly below market price.
Secondly, take players on a case by case basis. Moises Alou is a huge injury risk. Brian Giles isn't.

Much as a 30 year old Ken Griffey wasn't an Injury Risk for the Reds ..
and a 38 year old Gregg Maddux was a Huge injury risk for the Cubs ..
... Oh wait ....

yes... BUT its not like its many years like Griffey and as stated before... why let him go when he has not shows any problems... and yest its a risk of course... but hampton shoes no problems, or pavano, or clement for that matter... it doesnt matter your age when u sign a player

That's what Metsguy keeps forgetting. This is how Brian Giles is valued in the market, and even though it's a lot of money, he's still below market price.

why does it matter that he might get injured? If Padres were a legit contender I would agree but for god's sake they're a horrible team, they don't even have a decent hitter to start with maybe except for Adrian Gonzalez. Having Giles up there will be a plus, and if he does well, they can always trade him, if not, oh well.
