Hey, how about a tree simulator? You know, like when there is a tree in your yard, and you really want to move it?
Well, you move this healthy tree, one that puts out a lot of leaves and fruit at a regular pace, season after season. But then something happens. Once it's re-planted, it is almost dead. Sometimes, it comes back after a year or two, and is as healthy as ever after a few bad years. But, other times it never makes it back, and just withers away and dies. You never know what will happen, even if the experts tell you it will work out great.
Well, maybe a tree simulator would not be so much fun, after all. Anyway, I get the same thing with free agents I sign in BBMOL.

Sounds to me like you need viagra :)
Great post. I don't put much money into the farm system or scouting anymore. I fired all my scouts and signed players by stats. So far it has worked out well. I have several key stats I look at for different positions and have not had a bad signing yet.
I also used the stats to decide if i should keep or release a player and so far I have made the right choices. So my scouts are going to have to join the brisk midgets (little people) in the unemployement line.
The farm system is a waste in my opinion. You have to pump 100+ points in most leagues to get the top rated farm system and then you MIGHT get some good picks if you lose, but if you win you get medium picks that might take 4 or 5 five years to develop. So then you have to sign them to a contract to see IF they will perform. Which they might not becuase even though he says A+ in several catagories he still might be a bust . Well if I am spending that kind of money, I want top players... So I take my 100+ points and head over to the FA pool.

I don't make it to this boards very often, but this has to be one of the funniest posts ever.
BTW, the tree simulator should also work the other way. For instance if you have a dying tree that you've had in the yard for 3 or 4 years that used to be good and the experts say is still ok but only looks alive about half the time, ... and then about a third of the time, ... and then, well you get the picture.
Anyhow, the simulator should allow for if you yank the tree out of the ground and move it to San Francisco then the tree can spring back to life and win the Cy Young Award.
Or something like that.

Haynes...well last year he had an 8-17 record with a high era...last night he won his 12th game so it does sometimes happen in real baseball...the reds had said that he had a great arm and so far he has proven to be the ace

Not like it does in BBM.
I've signed too many free agents that never batted under .300 or have consistantly hit 30-35 homers a year for 5 years that proceeded to hit .200 and hit 13 homers and never recovered, or like willat said, recovered after 2 or three years of dismal production and a salary of 45 points.
Not to mention the pitchers... oh those stinkin' pitchers...
I've signed pitchers that are right in their prime like maybe 30-33 years old that have had era's in the upper two's to lower three's for 5-6 years in a row, never had more hits than innings pitched allowed that simply FELL APART. No injuries, just completely imploded. We're talking 190 innings, 240 hits, era out of this world, like around 6.75 - 7.50. It just happens too often.
AND VERY FUNNY POST WILLAT. THERE IS HUMOR IN TRUTH! :D

One thing about pitchers....
You can take a good pitcher and he can do really well depending upon the team he's on. If you have a really solid defense with super fielders in all positions the ERA will be a lot lower than on a team with weak fielding.
So maybe the tree moved into a neighborhood with termites...
A pitcher will also win more games if the team has a lot of run production, even with the same ERA...

but...
The fielding should have nothing to do with a pitcher who has consistantly given up 180 hits to 220 innings and never walked more than 90 batters in a season all of the sudden giving up 250 hits and 115 walks.
Poor fielding would effect wins, but not era. Earned run average is not affected by errors. They would on the most part be unearned runs.

Fielding does affect ERA
Not so much the FIELDING category, but RANGE. If your defense has a better range than average then they will be able to get balls that would go for hits. These are balls that would not be counted as errors. If a Center Fielder is able to run fast and antipate where a ball is going to go, he can rob a guy of a double or a triple. A great fielding shortstop with a great range can often turn a play that would normally be scored as a hit. He also can turn double plays more often.
If you total these things up, it can make a HUGE difference in ERA, in my opinion. I would be surprised if a top fielding team can shave a half point or more off of a pitchers ERA.
Please let me know if you disagree.

But a half a point on era doesn't mean a very good pitchers era would balloon from 3.50 career high to 6.50. That's a bit extreme, don't you think?
Just for the record, my right fielder is has a .974 Fielding pct and is -1% fielding range, my Centerfielder has a .986 +18% range and my Left fielder is at .985 +21% range and my SS is .982 with a +17% range.
You figure it out. My experts tell me to be patient with my tree, but he is making 56 points a year. I can be just so patient, you know what I mean?
I REALLY NEED THIS STUPID TREE TO GROW :D

I understand your problem now.
Sometimes pitchers have good years and sometimes they have bad years. It seems to happen more often in BBM than real life. I've had pitchers that I though were super that were sometimes good, sometimes super and sometimes made me want to pull my hair out.
One thing that I do to fight this. That is
#1 - don't overbid for pitchers
#2 - have spares available in case a pitcher has a bad year.
Sometimes a trip to the minors can help.... ;)
Other than that, it looks like that Oak tree you thought you were buying might be a Dogwood... :(
