they call it his "hip" but the cyst is actually more towards his rear end, pretty common to get a cyst in an area where one is frequently getting an injection ;)

The Yankees should cut him.

I DID! Just my luck. Less than a day after our draft when I felt lucky he dropped all the way to 7, he's out for at least April.

Well if we're to believe him, and he has "only" used anabolic steroids in the "past," then there isn't really a correlation between the cyst and steroid injections.
However, this is assuming he "only" used the stuff he said he used. Who knows?

So with this news I assume A-Rod won't be playing in the WBC and the Mariners have already told Adrian Beltre he can't play for the Dominican Republic.
I wonder now though, if the Mariners will let Beltre play because of this (I doubt it but you never know).

I doubt this has anything to do with steroid use. It'd take one hell of a coincidence for him to have been using, say, undetectable steroids, all these years, and then finally get complications from it right when his name is leaked.

Especially since it's a torn labrum. Never heard of that as steroid side effect before.
But hey, the anti-drug crowd sort of makes it all up as they go along anyway.

It's not a torn labrum. It's a cyst he's having removed from his hip.

No, it's a torn labrum. The cyst is a byproduct of the torn labrum.
He'll likely be out more than a month. Mike Lowell was.

Well that's new news.
SI says recovery time is 6-8 weeks for A-Rod, now.
I think it's a safe bet that he's out for all of April at the least.

If anything has been proven about steroids, is that the body eventually starts to break down over prolonged use. Just sayin.

Umm, good luck with that A-Roid. It's not like a deep bone bruise or a tweak, it's a fu(k'n torn labrum and a cyst. What part of he might require some time off does Cashman not understand? I'll predict he'll be out half the year minimum and won't be the same when he gets back because he's going to have to alter his swing in order to stop locking that hip up. And so the drama continues. The question now of course becomes do the Yankees get better or worse without him? Those that believe in chemistry and other magical qualities will say that undoubtedly the Yankees will be better without this clubhouse cancer, this poison. Those who have graduated past the fairy tale stage know that of course this is a huge loss for the Yankees, mitigated somewhat by the signing of Teixeira, but still a huge loss. As a Jays fan I couldn't be happier although we still might finish last.

Didn't Lowell play with the same condition all of last year? Or am I mistaking his injury with something else?
actionjackson
03-06-2009, 03:46 AM
I still don't think he'll be the same. He applies a lot of force to that right hip in the course of his swing. What sort of compensation will he make to deal with the pain? How will this affect his power/production? Will the compensation for hip pain create an injury elsewhere? We'll see what happens.

Yeah, he did. He also missed a good chunk of time here and there though, and A-Rod will too even if he postpones surgery until after the season.
Also, short of trading for David Wright to replace him, this makes the Yankees worse. There's no question about it and anybody foolish enough to believe it's a blessing for the Yankees has got another thing coming.

dunno if lowell did but supposedly utley did, or so its being reported. I think the whole point is moot and rediculous though. There are obviously different degrees of the same type of injury. A-Roids may or may not be more severe than Utleys. To critique A-roid for not playing through an injury someone else did just seems patently unfair to me. Team doctors can make that decision....not the lay person.
HoustonGM
03-06-2009, 11:48 AM
Lowell played through the exact same injury. Utley had a similar but less severe version of it. The point of bringing Lowell and Utley up, at least for me, is not to "critique" A-Rod if he decides to go under the knife, but just to point out that players playing through this isn't unprecedented.

i never said it wasnt' unprecedented...in fact just the opposite. I never said you were critiquing anyone. All I said is that there are CLEARLY different degrees to the "exact same injury"...in fact, no injury is exactly the same so that term is false. There are plenty of people on the radio today claiming AROD should play through it because others have. Thats a very trivial and unfair way to put it.

Of course. It's the radio you're listening to. You expect them to say fair, rational things...especially about Alex Rodriguez?! :p
To quote a comment I found funny at BTF:
Alex Rodriguez: "I have to say, I love my children above anything"
Media: "A-Rod: 'Winning not #1 priority'"
Alex Rodriguez: "I am proud to have played for both the USA and DR in WBC"
Media: "A-Rod: 'I am a traitor.'"
Alex Rodriguez: "I have never, ever, killed a puppy"
Media: "A-Rod: 'I have...killed a puppy'"
Alex Rodriguez: "Last week, I took half my salary from the bank and gave it to a charity"
Media: "A-Rod: "'Last week, I took...my salary from...a charity.'"

Essentially, A-Rod is the sole reason that the Yankees haven't won a World Series recently. Getting rid of him would make the Yankees just like they were in the late-90s.

However, Lowell also offers some reason for hope - he actually played pretty well when he was on the field. He posted a .344 wOBA and a +13.6 UZR/150, making himself a +3.1 win player while missing 1/3 of the season. While I’m sure it was painful to play through, he still was able to perform at something approximating his normal abilities. It didn’t take away his skills, just his frequency of deploying them.
Of course, Lowell is a sample of one, but Chase Utley played through a less serious but similar condition and performed so well that no one knew he was hurt until he had surgery in the off-season. Considering how well those two were able to perform with versions of this problem, it’s easy to see why the Yankees have decided to skip the surgery for now.

Sorry Jackson but I think everyone knows cluthiness and knowing how to win are the way to win championships along with having players that are real ball players. When will you guys stop saying such nonsense like getting on base, playing defense and out scoring your opponant is the way to win where there is more than 100 years of solid antidotial evidence that the factors I outlined above are the sole reasons for winning??

Good job gentlemen. In the end, you just have to go out there and give 110% for all nine innings. The whole team has to do this now, and not just one player like Alex Rodriguez. It also helps to score more runs than your opponent, so giving 110% is how you do that. Giving 90 or even 100% doesn't cut it anymore. If you want to make it past class-A, you have to give 110%. Just take it one day at a time.
