And here's the other set: 1945 - 1990. Yeah, I didn't want to go through the trouble of checking Expected Wins since then. I'm not even sure where I could go to check Expected Wins from '91 on.

Mariners and Rangers are the weakest here.

American

East West
1946 Red Sox 1957 White Sox
1948 Indians 1969 Twins
1961 Yankees 1977 Royals
1969 Orioles 1977 Rangers
1982 Brewers 1982 Angels
1984 Tigers 1990 A's
1985 Blue Jays 1990 Mariners

National

East West
1948 Braves 1945 Cubs
1951 Giants 1971 Pirates
1955 Dodgers 1976 Reds
1976 Phillies 1984 Padres
1979 Expos 1985 Cardinals
1988 Mets 1986 Astros

I just DL-ed the older set, thinking that it might start an interesting wave of people posting their personal favorites. To my surprise, I found that great photos of these old players had been added, and all salaries were adjusted so that the chore of negotiating contracts with every player had been eliminated. (Although I did not check, I assume the contract lengths have been transferred in whole from each team's respective year.) All told, I would have to say that this project was a lot more ambitious than it appeared at first glance, and deserves a big thank you!

1986 Astros and 1988 Mets?

Eh? Try 86 Mets or if you don't want duplicate years go '69

The 1942 Cardinals were superior (esp. on Pitching and Defense--versus the quality of the opposition teams as Brooklyn was), with the possible exception of Marty Marion at SS in '44--who won the NL MVP that year despite batting only .276. But in 1942, Marion led the NL in Doubles, with 38.
BTW, The Octopus (or 'Slats') is now 91.

Expected Wins mean nothing--real wins is *everything*.

1942 Cardinals 106-48 .688 [still their best record]
in beating a *strong* Brooklyn team--with 104 Wins, by only 2 G, and then beating the hated Yankees in 5 G (in 4 straight after loss in Game 1) in that thrilling upset World Series with few giving the Cardinals a chance.

#1 Bat R/G 4.84 vs. #2 Brooklyn 4.77
#1 Pit. R/G 3.08 vs. #2 Brooklyn 3.30
#2 Def. Eff. .728 vs. #2 Brooklyn .734

1944 Cardinals 105-49 .682 (#2 best record)
beat #2 Pit. (90-63), which wasn't nearly as great as Brooklyn was in '42 as the next-best team.

1944 Cardinals barely beat the Browns in the World Series, 4-2.

#1 Bat R/G 4.92 vs. #2 Pitts. 4.70
#1 Pit R/G 3.12 vs. Cin.-#2 3.46 vs. Pit.-#3 4.19
#1 Def. Eff. .733 vs. Cin.-#2 .731 vs. Pit.-#5 .701

Expected Wins mean nothing--real wins is *everything*.I disagree. The actual record shows how the team performed against other teams whereas Expected Wins puts the emphasis on the team itself.

Expected Wins for '44 was a full seven points higher than '42.
