View Full Version : Your MLB All-Star Ballot?

Who has everybody voted for on their All-Star ballots? Do you vote for your favorite players, or do you vote for the most-deserving ones? And how many times do you vote... 25 times (per email address), or just once?
HoustonGM
05-28-2009, 12:19 AM
I voted 25 times last month for whoever I "felt" was having the best season at each position, just skimming through the ballot, plus Lastings Milledge. I'll probably get around to doing a serious vote sometime soon...not that the voting is actually serious, as evidenced by the results so far....but it's still fun to do.

I voted for the most deserving and Lastings Milledge but if i couldn't decide who was more deserving i would just vote for whoever i liked more. Oh and i didn't vote for any yankees.

Tangentially related; I know we cant vote in pitchers. But the red sox appear to be making a case for Wakefield being an all-star. (http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090616&content_id=5360110&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos) Aside from 9 wins and 2 CG's, his 4.39ERA and low strikeouts sort of preclude him from the top of the league discussions, in my mind.
He's been good, he's been dependable, he's been lucky to be 9-3...and being an excellent figure, and a Red Sox player, I can see him garnering support - but don't other guys have better reasons to be on the All-Star pitching squad, due to their accomplishments this year??
Zack Greinke
Roy Halladay
Jered Weaver
Justin Verlander, for a decent ERA and K total (wow!)
King Felix, of course
Kevin Millwood (2 CGs as well)
or Edwin Jackson based on ERA numbers
If you're going to go on wins alone, then Kevin Slowey beats Wake, with his 9-2 record (and a lower ERA).
that seems like more than enough starters...should Wake even be in this discussion?
kenny1234

On stats - Wakefield shouldn't be there. There are two statistics that can support Wakefield (and are used in that article) - Wins and Quality Starts. In wins, he is 2nd in the AL, behind Halladay and tied with Slowey. On QS - he has 9, and 11 other pitchers have at least 9. Wakefield's ERA is the highest of that group, Beckett's is second highest.
So I guess we get to see if run support is enough to get a pitcher into the All-Star game.

Greinke is the only choice for AS starter as of right now. Could change as we get closer...but if the decision is made today...anyone other than Zack is ridiculous (unless he doesnt' have enough rest between his last start and the AS game)

I usually just vote for the funniest names. Which is why I always write in Tank Johnson of the Dallas Cowboys. Because when your name is Tank, you deserve to be in every all-star game invented.
And if none of the names sound remotely funny, then I just vote for a Dodger. Or an Angel if we're talking AL.

I don't think a 7 inning advantage is enough to cancel out a massive advantage in run prevention (254 vs. 172 ERA+).

he isn't playing better defensively...fifty points hitting wise, two more homers

Sure, that's one way to look at it. I'd prefer to look at it like this:
.331/.424/.530, 153 OPS+
.270/.348/.372, 92 OPS+
Defense can't make up that offensive gap.
Jeffy25
06-17-2009, 10:46 PM
I don't think mccan is outplaying Yadier...at all....especially as well as Yadier is calling the games. I don't watch McCann nightly but i can pull stats.
McCann
.323/414/516 - 6 Hrs - 26 RBI
Molina
.270/348/372 - 5 Hrs - 21 RBI
Advantage - McCann
Defense
McCann
19 assists, 2 errors, 2 passed balls and 23/34 bases have been stolen w a range factor of 8.02 fielding percentage of .994
Molina - with 100 more innings thus far caught
has 35 assists, 1 error, 2 passed balls and 11/20 runners have been caught w a range factor of 7.39 and a fielding percentage of .997.
Advantage Molina...
and if you break down the innings alone and number of stolen bases, there is a huge difference. half as many stolen bases in 100 less innings played.
And you'll notice i said....no one is running away with it...i wasn't argue at the time that he was the best...I said I am glad he is getting recognized this year, especially in a year where he could be that leading vote getter
HoustonGM
06-17-2009, 10:48 PM

McCann hasn't ran away with it. I'm just happy that Molina is getting recognized...and with his GG last year. I'm more then a little pleased...he is a lot of fun to watch, and I believe he will turn into a consistent .300 hitter who hits 20 homers a year...granted he has to get to 10 first :)
HoustonGM

You did:
I don't think mccan is outplaying Yadier...at all....
Also, it's very unlikely that Molina's going to turn into a 20 home run hitter. Career high of 8, slugging percentage of .361. Minor league slugging of .368. He doesn't have power.
