No word yet on the return. I guess LaRoche will shift into a bench role.

From another board:
"My guess is the Pirates got Julio Lugo in return."
Uh huh. Sure.

"Just a feeling. A few rumors have been swirling around Lugo recently, and this is the first trade the Sox have made since the rumors. Probably unlikely though, given Lugos contract (which I forgot about)."
^ good talk, son.

You don't think they might put LaRoche at 1B and shift Youkilis over to 3B? Lowell's D at 3B has been awful so far this year, supposedly, and his offense has been okay..kinda low OBP.
Then again, maybe they'll put LaRoche/Youkilis in against RHPs and Lowell/Youkilis in against LHPs.

I don't think he's going to push Lowell completely to the bench. Lowell will get extra rest from here on out, though.

According to WEEI's Alex Speier, the Pirates will receive shortstop Argenis Diaz and right-hander Hunter Strickland from the Red Sox for Adam LaRoche.
Basically, two fillers.

I think Argenis Diaz is better than just filler. He's got a terrific glove, and while his offense probably won't ever be worth anything, he replace Jack Wilson and do that whole Adam Everett thing.

Probably as good as you can do for two months of Adam LaRoche...unless you trade him to Dayton Moore. Then he'd let you pick any three prospects in the entire system.

Here ya go...
Diaz and pitcher Hunter Strickland were reportedly sent by Boston to the Pirates for Adam LaRoche, the Boston Globe reports.
Spin:
Diaz is a slick fielder with elite upside on defense, but he will need to work on his offense if he is to make an impact with the Bucs. At the very least, adding him gives the organization added depth at shortstop should Jack Wilson be dealt.

So, whos next for the Pirates? Wilson or Sanchez. Maybe a darkhorse like Capps or Grabow.

Capps is too young and I would say too important for them to trade away. They way overuse him, but he is a valuable player for them (especially since he's only 25).
I think they could get good value for Sanchez. I think it is time they rid themselves of their old balls and rebuild completely (for whatever they can get with their guys). Sanchez is a good start.

I'm still trying to figure out what this does for the Sox.
That's still not too clear to me.

Give up basically nothing for a good bat to give Lowell more time off.

Yeah, HGM, you may be right. It may be just that simple.

I should say "decent" bat. LaRoche is a slightly above average bat (for a first basemen) in the NL, which means he's probably slightly below average in the AL. Either way, it's an upgrade over Mark Kotsay.

Solid bat for minimal cost because LaRoche has a bad contract. The one big advantage the big money teams have - they can spend a couple million for depth.

Here is Adam LaRoche on Adam LaRoche:

He needs it. He was noticeably hobbling in the Sox/Jays series immediately after the break. One less suitor for Rolen. Crap.

Pirates Had Another Offer For LaRoche
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 23 at 9:39am CST]
Before the Pirates dealt Adam LaRoche to Boston, a second team made them an offer, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. An unknown club proposed a deal that would have sent a major leaguer and a borderline prospect to Pittsburgh for LaRoche. The Pirates would have had to take on the major leaguer's salary in the deal, which wasn't proposed by the Giants.
They've made four trades already, but the Pirates could continue dealing. GM Neal Huntington tells MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez that none of his players are untouchable.
