it wasn't a robbed home run....and casey said that you gotta love all the hard work that Wells puts in....it could be true, I don't follow the blue jays on a nightly basis....but does he really put in all the effort that awards him his 100 plus million dollar deal?

And if he doesn't pop up, he hits into a double play. He also has the wheels to steal more than he does, but he doesn't put effort into stealing. His one downfall (physically) is that he doesn't get good contact. He almost never gets good contact on the ball, every pitch he either pops up foul, pops up or swings and misses. A fly ball to the outfield is a blessing from him.

"It shouldn't be an error, because he gave lots of effort"
-Nationals broadcaster just nowThat can be true. If you're attempting a diving catch and you just miss (ie you trap it or it hits off the heal of your glove) you shouldn't be punished with an error because you actually gave the effort instead of mailing it in.

Here was the situation:
Pop up, in foul ground, 1B/2B/RF all go in for it, RF somehow makes it over there, but it bounces out of his glove.

Ummmm...what? Surely you mean that he's good at not dropping the ball, right? Because a -20.1 UZR is 101 games is absolutely horrible. In fact, he's the worst fielding center fielder in baseball.
200tang
08-05-2009, 09:34 PM
Wells is a good fielder
not to nitpick, but Wells has been horrendously bad both this year and last year.
UZR puts him at -14.3 last year and -20.2 this year.
The fielding bible put him at -7 runs last year and had this to say
Wells is a former Gold Glove center fielder coming off a down year for him. He gets good jumps and has speed, as well as experience. His throwing arm is better than the typical center fielder's. He makes quite a few plays diving or sliding on balls in front of him, but he can also get back to the wall for deep drives. Wells will occasionally slide for a ball when he doesn't need to.
If I could see his +/- this year, I'm guessing it would agree with UZR that he is absolutely terrible in the OF. I think we're seeing another Andruw Jones.

See? THIS is what former players are good for analyzing - in-game situations. MLB Network just had Harold Reynolds break down the Mota/Fielder HBP from last night and show how you can tell that it was on purpose, breaking down Russell Martin's actions and such. This is what they need to confide former player's to analyzing, because this is their strength. They need to hire actual baseball analysts to analyze players and teams and moves, while complementing them with former players for the in-game analysis, rather than use the former players for everything, making them look like geniuses half the time and idiots the rest of the time.

Um, WTF...Selig is a douchebag
1:25pm: Baseball America's Jim Callis hears that the Braves had agreed to a deal with Minor before the draft, but didn't sign him right away because of "interference from MLB." Apparently the commissioner's office pressured the Braves not to make the deal official because they didn't want it to inflate other bonuses. The $2.42MM bonus Minor will receive tops MLB's recommended bonus by $242k.
So Minor misses about 2 months of PT because Selig wouldn't let the deal through.

I mean, 4 wins in a row???? Nah, I had to be dreaming. So today, I crank on the TV and by the top of the second inning the Nats are down 6-0. Ok, reality is back. So I go for my walk.
I decide to do a long one today (I've been doing badly lately), so I walk for about an hour, don't know how far that was, just know it was further than I have before.
So I walk back in, decide to turn on the TV and see the carnage, and.............
and it's tied up 8-8
WTF????
THEN, TO TOP IT OFF, the Nats score 4 in the bottom of the 8th to WIN THE GAME 12-8 ! ! ! ! FIVE IN A ROW ! ! ! SWEEEP THE MARLINS????? REALLY, THE MARLINS??? And come from a 6 run deficit to boot????
No way. NO WAY. I'm sure this is a dream. I'm sure it isn't real, and so I'm sure I didn't also walk for an hour.
Guess I better go on my real walk now.

Everyone knows the Washington Nationals are the worst team in baseball, right? They are the only club around with less than 40 wins on the season, and they’ve been the brunt of every joke about baseball for the last few years. However, right now, they might just be putting a better team on the field than the Kansas City Royals.
The reversal of fortune for these two clubs have actually given the Royals a decent chance at passing the Nationals for the worst record in baseball. They are 5 1/2 games ahead of the Nationals in the standings, but if they keep playing .295 baseball like they have for the last two months, they’ll finish with a record of 57-105. The Nationals, if they keep playing at the .419 clip they’ve put up since Morgan arrived, would finish with a 58-104 record.

Sort of. They should be able to grab Bryce Harper in the event they finish last and they need a catcher so that would be nice. They've also got a good rotation and okay bullpen.
Looking at them now they already have the following :
1B
DH
3B
Rotation
Bullpen
C (if they do draft Harper and they decide he can stick)
The OF shouldn't be terribly hard to fix, it's the MI positions that will give them the most trouble (If they decide they want to keep Teahan he could move to a corner OF or possibly 2B, but they really should trade him).
Fix the FO and get to work on fixing that defense & offense!

Bullpen..the pen has been ATROCIOUS!!! The Royals do have some nice potential arms coming thru the minors that could be here very soon..but that's IF DM actually gives them a chance.
The Royals aren't in need of being completely blown up..they just need to get rid of several turds and actually give some younger guys a chance..but given the way DM thinks....we'll have Willy Tavares leading off next year and will sign three more old "veterans" with "experience.

That's why I said fix the FO first :p And if you want, just switch Butler and Kila's position and you still have a 1B and DH :)
He should have been on your starting day roster over Mike Jacobs. So far this year in AAA he's running a .383 wOBA (.869 OPS) with 40 extra base hits in 425 PA.

Oh I agree that it should happen...trust me I know all about Kila and everyone else in the minors....they are the only good part of the team to follow.
However..in the real world, DM ain't going anywhere anytime soon..and Kila is simply filler.
Also..there are some very real concerns that his bat is too slow to ever be a good enough hitter for a DH. Should be a good OBP guy...but probably won't pack enough power for a DH. Maybe if he was just strictly platooned. Nonetheless..he's better than Jacobs.

Eh, I was kidding. I don't think the DH changes anything in the game. The only real argument I hear about the DH is that it takes away from strategy, but I rarely see managers do anything 'inventive' with it. They usually just play it by the book, which they should. Liking or not liking the DH is a matter of opinion, but it doesn't change the game of baseball in any way.

haha, well i don't obviously see it happening, but there is nothing wrong with a blog writer pointing out how it could be done.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears that Alex Rios has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team. The Blue Jays now have three choices:
They can let the claiming team have Rios and the $60MM remaining on his contract.
They can pull him back from waivers and keep him.
They can work out a deal with the claiming team.
One executive calls this an "incredible opportunity" for the Blue Jays to shed payroll.
wha.

why would you hope that? The only way that would be okay is if they took on Johjima & Silvas contract. :|

He's 28 and, despite his bad play this year, has really excelled with the bat (.365 wOBA in 2006 and .368 wOBA in 2007, .350 wOBA last year) and with the glove (career 13.8 UZR/150 in RF). I'd definitely take a chance on him.

Well we can't afford more salary. Not to mention
Ichiro
Franklin Gutierrez
Michael Saunders
(That right there is our best OF even if Rios comes over, then after it would look like this)
Alex Rios
Endy Chavez
Ryan Langerhans
(then the prospects in no particular order)
Greg Halman
Tyson Giles
Dustin Ackley (not signed yet)
There is no need/room for Rios unless they feel like taking on some salary.

Players being claimed on waivers happens all throughout August, and usually it's not reported. Basically every player gets placed on waivers as procedure. A good amount get claimed and pulled back.

Well, if the Mariners DO claim him (not saying they will or I think they did) he would give us one of the best backups in the game. Or they could possibly platoon him with Saunders (it's weird, we started out the year with too many RHB and now we don't have any)

I still don't like the risk with Halman. He has a huge chance of never even reaching the majors. Gillies isn't that big of a prospect. The only one who projects well and is still a risk defensively is Ackley. When you have a player like Rios, who was a +5.5 win player last season, sometimes you need to take a chance.

He's also got 6 years left on a 7 year contract and we have absolutely no need for him. That doesn't include the fact that OFers are getting significantly less in FA. Signing Rios would mean not being able to bring back any players leaving this year and would really cripple us at 1B/DH.
Not to mention that you didn't address the 3 starters in the OF :p. Rios MIGHT be better than Saunders (right now), but is it worth it to be stuck with Rios' contract for 6 years? I don't think so. You don't pay that kind of money to an OF in this economy and certainly not one who may or may not be a starter in a year or two.

Its not the Red Sox or Mets:
4:41pm: Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox didn't claim Rios, either.
4:39pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears from a high-ranking Mets official that the Mets did not claim Rios. J.P. Ricciardi didn't get into specifics with MLB.com's Jordan Bastian and just said it's normal to place players on waivers.
Maybe the White Sox? Maybe the Giants? (they were in talks with the Jays about Rios for Lincecum a few offseasons ago)

I do hope that you understand that it goes by league first...
For example. Rios will go through American league teams first....so actually the Royals get first pick
According to the guy whose name i can't remember on MLB tonight, he did not make it to the national league.
