Is it Beckham or someone else? He seems to be the only one I could think of.

He's not the leader. He's a candidate. His June and July werent good.
Other candidates:
Andrew Bailey
Brad Bergesen
Rickey Romero
Brett Anderson
Gordon Beckham
Nolan Reimold
Elvis Andrus

Bailey/Andrus/Romero in all likelihood.

Yea, after looking at the numbers Bailey and Romero seem to be the frontrunners.

Ok, it isnt Wieters. For all I carried him in fantasy this year, prayed to his Chuck Norrisesque statue, no way. Im thinking 3 guys. Bailey, Porcello, and Andrus. My final would be Porcello because he has had the biggest impact on team. A quick shortstop is great. A good setup man is also great. Porcello has won 10 games for the Central division leading Tigers. Only Verlander has more wins than him. He is my vote hands down 100% no matter what happens.

Bailey has closed for the A's, not been a set up man.
Ricky Romero also has ten wins ... plus a better ERA..and Brad Bergesen has a higher ERA than both Romero and Porcello.
He is my vote hands down 100% no matter what happens.
You really want to close your mind off like that when he's not even clearly the best candidate right now and there's a month and a half of games left?

I'd probably have to go with Romero. I saw first hand how good he is when he tossed 6 no hit innings and shut down the Phillies.
Although, Porcello and Bailey are certainly up there.
Weiters isn't even in the equation.

Ok, Ill give a little on Romero. Maybe 20%. I pick Porcello because as a rookie he has carried Detroit at times and they are still in 1st. Bergesen is good and so is Romero. Problem is that they play for Bal and Tor. I am basing my vote on wins as well as overall team record, which seems to be how a pitcher gets the vote anyway. For a relief pitcher, you have to do something pretty amazing, so I wont even touch that one.
HoustonGM
08-12-2009, 02:52 AM
I'm not sure why you'd use overall team record for an award for which rookie had the best season, but okay.
And Wins? 1950 still? :(

Houston, Im just going on history. For a pitcher who contributes what is considered the most in his rookie year helps a bundle. While all 3 pitchers are fantastic this year, if Detroit makes the playoffs, the others could be overshadowed.
Can we at least agree that the AL ROY should be a pitcher?

History should be used when discussing who we think WILL win, not who we think should win, which I thought is what we were discussing.
But even so, team performance/making the playoffs hasn't really mattered much for the ROTY vote. That's more of an MVP thing.
Can we at least agree that the AL ROY should be a pitcher?
Gordon Beckham has a very strong case depending on his play over the rest of the season.

I still think a pitcher will take it this year because this is the best AL rookie class in a while. No matter what you say, I am sticking with Porcello :)!!! I can only look at this as a Yanks fan. We rest players against Baltimore and now Toronto. Detroit is a huge fear in NY and since Porcello is the defacto 3rd starter, we fear him. I am biased.

I think last year (Evan Longoria, Joba Chamberlain, Alexei Ramirez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Aviles, Joey Devine, Brad Ziegler, Armando Galaragga) and 2006 (Justin Verlander, Jonathan Papelbon, Francisco Liriano, Jered Weaver, Nick Markakis, Ian Kinsler) were substantially better.
The rookie classes this year, particularly in the National League, are very weak compared to recent years.

Metsguy didn't know that Beckham's batting over .300 with a good OBP and SLG...despite starting off poorly...another lesson in not overreacting to a small sample size... .159/.260/.205 through his first 13 games. .341/.401/.555 since.

Ok, we argue alot, but this we can agree on 1000%. Rookies brought up this year are so much weaker than earlier years. Doesnt mean that the end of this year could be a bad class. Plenty of guys with over 130 ABs we have been waiting for. My biggest hope is Travis Snider on the Jays. With Rios gone, I cant wait to see the numbers he puts up.

In the case of Porcello, wins don't mean ****, to me at least. He has a very nice offense behind him. He's pitched well, but Romero has put up much better overall numbers. Bailey has been outstanding with the A's and Beckham has arguably been the ChiSox best hitter over the last month.

They're average.
It's not really the offense of the team overall, though. It's the offense as its performed in his games. He's gotten 5.11 runs per game of support (compared to Detroit's average of 4.67).

The Tigers have a good offense when Porcello pitches. They just take the rest of the week off.
I'd vote for Elvis Andrus, personally. I've seen all of the rookies play this year, and was most impressed by Andrus.

Romero 10-5; 3.66 era; 90k
Porcello 10-7; 4.34 era; 57k
Win/loss, ERA and strikeouts is what a pitcher will most likely be evaluated on when the writers vote for ROY. Romero has him in all 3 categories.
Too early to tell, rookie pitchers usually start hitting a wall around this time of the season
For position players I think it would be one of the following:
Elvis Andrus .261 ba; 4 dingers; 20 steals; 5 triples
Gordon Beckham .303 ba; 6 dingers; 4 steals;
Nolan Reimold .272 ba; 10 dingers; 7 steals

Why is Andrus your frontrunner, his OBP and BA are huge holes. All he does is steal bases.

And plays really good defense. But, all I said was "I watched them all he impressed me the most." It's obviously not a very scientific or well-analyzed opinion.

.263/.330 BA/OBP aren't huge holes. They're roughly league average. The average AL shortstop has hit .270/.324/.388, so Andrus is slightly above in OBP and below in SLG. The only true hole in his game is lack of power. His outstanding defense more than makes up for that though.
He's 6th of 9 qualified shortstops (http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=bat&lg=al&qual=y&type=6&season=2009&month=0) in WAR at 2.0, which is an above average player.
