In baseball this year, who has been the biggest disappointment?

President
09-21-2009, 02:22 AM
Have to say the Cubs or the Indians, and lately the Rays

Oh and Wieters because of all the hype he recieved

Jeffy25

Yeah the Mets probably. And Wieters because he batted .718 less than he should have.

Pat Burrell has an argument. He was supposed to put the Rays over the top...instead, .232/.329/.385 85 OPS+

I would think the Cubs. I guess you can say the Mets with most of their top guys coming down with injury.

Not much love for the Rays

They were supposed to be the third head in the AL Easts 3-headed monster.

They do have the fourth best run differential in the AL....just sayin.

And the 7th best record and are already eliminated from the post season.

Do they have a good team, for sure.

Are they very disappointed in the outcome of this season. For sure.

Most people expected them to finish 3rd (I didn't, I think I "predicted" 2nd), so I just can't see saying they're the "biggest disappointment" when they finished about where most people expected them to. The Mets, for example, were largely predicted to either be first or right there with Philadelphia, not fourth with a .433 winning percentage.

NL-Albert Pujols? he is having one of his top three seasons of his career

and i don't remember exactly, but what was B.J. Upton expected to do this year?

I don't pay a lot of attention to the AL East overall.

i knew that he was having a lot of offensive issues and wasn't hustling like he was expected to, was batting ninth or not in the lineup etc.

I would say team wise, you have to go with the Mets or the Cubs.....

I was a lil surprised the A's didn't do better.

Uh, the A's were expected to suck, they had an EXTREMELY young staff and a horrid offense. And look at Upton's stats for last season instead of asking something stupid like that. And hustle really has nothing to do with anything?

to be honest, i didn't expect much out of them at all....they did what i felt like they would do.

sorry bucher :p

who has been the biggest surprise?

team and player?

I would say Garret Jones from Pittsburgh has been quite the eye opener.

and i don't think anyone thought Grienke would have a Cliff Lee esque year.

Team wise, i am honestly a little surprised at my Cardinals.

I remember very clearly at the beginning of the year saying the Cardinals would shock a lot of people....but the trades have made them better then anticipated. I felt like they could win 85-90 reasonably...but with these trades of Holliday, Lugo and DeRosa, it becomes more like 90-95 caliber of a team.

Upton's always been loaded with tools since he was a 1st round pick. Big things have been expected from him. He broke out in 2007, hitting .300/.386/.508 with 24 homers and 22 steals. In 2008, his power went missing though he still got on-base at a strong clip and stole 44 bases. A shoulder injury was blamed for the power outage. Then, in the playoffs, he went on a tear, hitting .288/.333/.652 with 7 HR in 16 games. So, people took it as a sign that he was no longer being bothered by the injury (and had surgery in the offseason), so people expected him to pick up where he left off in 2007.

Of course, he regressed in practically every possible way (http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/whats-with-b-j-upton), save for speed.

I am aware of Upton's numbers.

I was asking what was he projected to do since so many people are verbalizing it that way. jessh

and I felt like the A's could take advantage of a pretty weak division this year. With Holliday in the mix, and a lot of young players who could prove they were big league ready, i felt they would have been more competitive....i didn't say anything like world champions....i was just saying i felt they would have done better.

I think my biggest surprises are those two teams. I expected the Angels to fall off and the Rangers to be typical Rangers.

I think the Angels have been the biggest surprise in the AL. I had picked the Rangers to win the West, and their slow start and losing Adenhart did make it seem they would have a poor season. In the NL, my Rockies definitely, along with the Giants. And I expected Arizona to do better

Jeffy25

The Rockies seem to have a knack of being competitive late in the year....just seems that way.

Alfonso Soriano has cost his team more then Milton Bradley this year, by quite a bit, actually

In terms of dollars, sure. But bradley was supposed to come in, be that big left handed bat and be an anchor in their lineup, they had a lot riding on him, and he was just awful in comparision to expectations.

I think the Soriano love afair started to end last year.
