When we die, we instantly enter another universe in which everything is the same except we're alive.
Even to the extent that a line of possible events is avoided to allow a person to live.
E.g. A to a person's conscious lying on their death bed, something happens that allows them to get spontaneously better, hence while they die in their current universe, they feel they've never passed and merely got better.
Could be the same with old age, maybe eventually the consciousness ends up in a universe where a 'cure' is found for old age etc.
I've been almost killed dozens of times and thought about this very question.

More than your question. What if every decision that we make produces a parallel universe where we made the other decision.

I sometimes wonder when we die, we just become reborn again through another body but with all memory of the previous life erased.

A good example. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallels_(Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation))

Woundn't each person have to have thier own universe? And exist in several billion others? Think of all the people you have know who have passed away, in thier universe they are alive, maybe with you, but of course somebody they knew has passed, but they are still alive in thier universe, maybe with both of you, and on and on and on.....
Is infinity possible? Pre big bang, many thought the universe had no beginning or end, it was just always here. A beginning an infinate number of years ago.

I think I need another beer........

My belief is that when we die our energy and matter and such is recycled (Which is true) and eventually becomes a new lifeform. Whether WE will be that lifeform, I am not sure. A friend of mine has a good arguement that after death our minds continue in an "astral plane" of continued thought, like a neverending dream.

Home With God by Neale Donald Walsch covers some of these ideas. It is the 10th book in his Conversations With God series. You can read it as a stand alone book though.
