I am the Atlanta Braves and the ny mets. I saw last year that i had one, maybe two holes to fill. But i cant get into the fa sweepstakes becayse i am over payroll? Meanwhile i have cash sitting around {for the braves something like 148 points} and i cant do anything? Why did they do that?

So that teams dont spend on players and end up deep into the hole. Cut your salaries (I am the Indians and Mets and my team payrolls are 300 points)

Exactly. If you have that much payroll, and extra cash, use some of that cash to release players you don't need.

The intent of the prohibition on hiring is to try and insure that some teams do not end up with outlandish payrolls.

Releasing players also puts talent into the FA pool which other teams may want.

I understand the safe guard but it is also a stupid idea too. Someone like me who never had a problem with my budgets now has to go and release players {some of which i want to keep} thus making a whole in another area. I don't like it one bit, i understand what you guys are saying {and thanks for responding btw} but to me it just seems like trying to soup with a knife.

I like the payroll prohibitions, but......

a provision could be made so that you can use your cash to buy an extension on your payroll. This way small market teams could play for profit for several years, build up a tidy sum of cash, and then spend it on a run for the championsip one season.

Right now, it seems the only real practical use cash has is to buy out contracts.

Cash certainly has a use. It increases the limit... if you save up 200pts, you can go 50pts over budget for 4 years before you start showing a loss.

I agree though, that small market teams hurt from this. If they save up 200 points, they'd rather spend 200 points on one year contracts to make a run at the title, since I think it's too difficult to sustain a winner in, for example, kansas city.

I have a small market team and I am slated to make a 100 point profit for the 3rd season. Last year I was 94-68 this year I am 35-18 despite having a payroll of 223 points. I am thinking of taking the ultimate challenge. That being Oakland.

I am Oakland in FastSim 56 and it is in year 2002. I am now 43-21 and have a payroll of 480. My cash is -2. My budget is 263.
How am i only -2 in cash while i have a payroll of 480 and budget of 263?
I went to the ALCS last year and lost in 5 games but am still only pulling in 22,000 fans. That seems odd that my team is so good and ticket prices are normal and only get 22,000.
If i have 0 pts for scouting and farmsystem and medical will that hurt how my team plays or not?

You are in deep trouble now iwth that high payroll. You will be deep in the hole by the time those contracts expire. 0 scouting means you dont got an accurate rating of players so guys can be scouted as A's when they really are C skilled. Farm is how your players develop and who they draft. 0 farm means you have to build throughg free agency and not develop anyone.

You can play with your expenses in the offseason to increase your budget for salaries. That should work if you have enough cash to absorb the increase in your payroll.
